The University of York ranked in the top 10 in the UK for its world-leading research (REF 2021)

York moved into the top 10 of UK universities for research quality, up from 14th position in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

The University of York has been ranked in the top 10 in the UK for the quality of its research, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

This ranking, by the Times Higher Education analysis of the latest Research Excellence Framework, includes some spectacular results across all three Faculties and is an absolutely incredible achievement.

The Research Excellence Framework provides a thorough evaluation of the research impact of British higher education institutions. It assesses the quality of a university's research output in terms of how highly cited it is and the impact it has had in both academia and the wider world. Moreover, REF provides significant additional recognition to institutions and researchers who have delivered demonstrable benefits to the economy, society, public policy, culture or quality of life through their research activities.

The University of York has always prized both the discovery of new knowledge through research and the impact it brings to our society.

Our warmest congratulations to our colleagues at the University of York for their outstanding results – we are proud that we are part of the York community.
