Farewell to Former Thessaloniki Mayor and our Honorary Graduand Yannis Boutaris

Expressing our sadness on the passing of Yannis Boutaris, Former Mayor of Thessaloniki, Honorary Graduand of CITY College and iconic winemaker. He served as a Mayor of Thessaloniki from 2011-19 and he also served as municipal councilor from 2003-11 and from 2023 until his death, leaving a significant imprint to the city he loved. Boutaris, from a winemaking family, was one of Greece’s most important oenologists. Trained as a chemist and in oenology he led the family wine business for many years before entering politics. He had been widely honoured for his contributions to community and international relations and his commitment to Greek culture and the environment. These awards include his appointment as a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur by the President of France and receiving the Order of the Star of Italy from the President of Italy. In recognition of his work, Yannis Boutaris received an honorary degree of the University of Sheffield at the graduation ceremony of CITY College in 2018.
