MUSE (My University of Sheffield Environment)

As a member of CITY College, you will get full access to the resources, services and facilities that you need for your research from the Information and Learning Commons (ILC). But as members of CITY College as well, you can also access a range of electronic resources from the University of Sheffield Library.

On these pages you will find useful information and basic guidelines on how to access and use the key resources available for CITY College members, as well as, tools that will facilitate research.

What is MUSE

MUSE, is the University of Sheffield (TUOS) portal, designed to give students and staff personalized and secure access to university resources from any location.

MUSE allows you to:

• Use STARPlus, the Library catalogue to search for all electronic & print books, journals, theses, White Rose Research Online (WRRO) content, databases, maps, images & sounds.
• Use “Articles and Databases” to do literature searches of multiple databases simultaneously.
• Search Google Scholar and find links to Sheffield’s Library full text context.
• Send and receive emails and create a personal address book.

How to access MUSE

In order to access the University of Sheffield’s Library electronic resources, whether you are on or off campus, you will need to log into MUSE. To login follow the steps below:

1. Click on the LIBRARY tab
2. Select from the menu on the left side Sheffield Library Resources to access Subject Library resources and support pages
3. From the Quick links menu select Resources and support to access your subject specific related pages.

Starplus (University of Sheffield Library Catalogue)

Specifically helpful when you have a specific bibliography of articles or need to conduct a subject research.

• Use “University Collections” to search for all electronic & print books, journals, theses, White Rose Research Online (WRRO) content, databases, maps, images & sounds.

• Use “Articles and Databases” to do literature searches of multiple databases simultaneously. Searches can also be limited to predefined subject specific Quick Sets. Any search results will be a mix of open access and subscribed content.

Google Scholar

When to use it

The University of Sheffield Library Resources and CITY College E-Resources will help you to successfully locate scholarly resources. However, you can also use Google Scholar to search for scholarly literature such as peer-reviewed articles & papers, theses, books, abstracts, from academic publishers, scholarly societies, preprint repositories, universities & other organizations. Not everything listed within Google Scholar is available at the University of Sheffield or CITY College. 

To locate full text electronic content available through the University of Sheffield Library, you will first need to set your preferences through Google Scholar Library Links. To do this, follow the steps below:

1.  Connect to Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/

2.  Click on Scholar Settings

3.  In the Library Links section type Sheffield and click Find Library

4.  Check the box next to University of Sheffield Library - Find it @ Sheffield

5.  Click the Save preferences button (on the upper right corner of your screen)

Now you can start searching using links to the University Library's e-resources.

For example: A search for “management” literature will retrieve several results.

At this point you will be asked to login to MUSE by using your personal username and password.

Databases

The best way of searching for articles on a particular subject is to use databases. On the Library Resources for CITY College web pages you will find subject oriented resources for each CITY College department.

How to access Databases

Visit the Library resources for CITY College web page. At this point you should click on the related to your subject resources tab and then select the specific database you wish to search in.

To search within the contents of a database and download full text articles you must login to MUSE by using your personal username and password.

I still can't find the journal or the article that I need. What can I do?

If Sheffield University does not have access to a journal you are looking for, then contact the Library Services Desk at CITY’s Information & Learning Commons to use the InterLibrary Request Service to obtain the articles you need.
