Annual MBA Study Week 2017 at the University of Sheffield
In June-July 2017 our Executive MBA students from Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest, Sofia, Kyiv and Yerevan visited the University of Sheffield in the UK for the Annual Study Week. Like every year the study week was a mix of classes, seminars, company visit activities, free time and exciting outings for the first year MBA students. Escorted by Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of EXED and MBA programme and Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the MBA programme, the students were warmly welcomed in a reception that took place at the state-of-the-art premises of the Management School. During their stay at Sheffield MBA participants attended the last module of the first year of their studies, ‘Developing Business Processes & Operations’ and also had classes for the online unit ‘Information Management’. Except for classes, students also participated in various activities and social events organised on the occasion of their visit. MBA participants had a great time at Sheffield and had the opportunity to network and share experiences with fellow MBA students. Moreover all MBA students visited the Jaguar – Land Rover plant at Liverpool where the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport are produced. During the company visit company representatives presented the corporate goals, strategies and achievements and also gave a tour presenting new production methods and tools used that were directly related to the unit ‘Operations and Process Management’ of the Executive MBA programme. Also our students had a chance to visit the city of Liverpool and especially the Docks (port- sea side) area. The structure of the Executive MBA programme includes the Annual Study Week, which takes place every year the University of Sheffield, enhancing the programme’s international character, providing a brilliant networking opportunity to students. The Annual Study Week in Sheffield is one of the programme’s key attributes during which MBA participants network, learn and have fun at the same time.

Student Summer Trip to Skiathos island
After finishing their exams, our students set off to the beautiful island of Skiathos for an exciting 4-day summer trip where they had the chance to relax, enjoy the sun and the wonderful beaches and get a first feel of summer holidays. Our students had a blast! The excursion was organized by the Students’ Union (CSU). CSU board commented: "We're extremely happy that more than 70 students joined us for the last big event of this Academic Year! During the course of four days, we had the chance to explore and experience the beautiful Greek island of Skiathos, in the Aegean Sea. Its beautiful beaches, vivid nightlife and natural charm, made the trip particularly special for the students. With the new CSU Board taking over, we would like to thank all students and staff for their continuous support and for being part of what we're doing. For us in the Union, this year has been a great experience and pleasure. We wish for everyone to have nice vacations!" This year, the Students' Union organised more student trips than ever before, bringing our student community closer together. The Lifespan Project: Research on Ageing by our Psychology Department
Ageing research is the focus of the ‘Lifespan Project’ of the Psychology Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College that completed its first year of operation. Led by a group of researchers namely Prof. Ana B. Vivas, Head of the Psychology Department and Mr. George Pavlidis, Lecturer at the Department with the collaboration of Dr. Frantzidis from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the project has the ambition to investigate alterations in brain connectivity and cognitive vitality due to aging, and their relation with health, social and functional aspects of everyday life. The LifeSpan Project team uses an array of measurements, such as brain imaging techniques (encephalograph –EEG-), neuropsychological assessment, psychometrics and questionnaires. During this first year, project researchers collecting data from 40 cognitively healthy participants from 18 years to 72 years old. The project’s future aim is to acquire longitudinal data, following the same participants over a longer period of time. The research aims of the LifeSpan Project are aligned with the strategic goals of the European research framework Horizon 2020, contributing in the most contemporary stream of knowledge for cognitive health and the factors that promote positive outcomes with ageing. In addition, it offers to the participants a detailed europsychological assessment and evaluation. A part of the project team consists of students who were selected to do an internship as research assistants, enhancing this way their professional experience and academic portfolio with training in using neuropsychological assessment, as well as in conducting EEG screening sessions. For the academic year 2016-17, the LifeSpan Project team comprised Ms Papaioannou Georgia, student in the MA Clinical Neuropsychology, Mr Riku Ihalainen, student at the MSc Cognitive Neuropsychology, Ms Eleni Giagkousiklidou, Ms Dimitra Lachtara, and Mr Christos Peppas, students of the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme, as well as Ms Lina Tzani, alumna of the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme. Mr Pavlidis and students of the Psychology Department participate in the Health Plus Care Conference in London
Mr George Pavlidis, Lecturer at the Psychology Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, and researcher at the Faculty’s research centre, the South East European Research Centre (SEERC), along with Ms Papaioannou Georgia, student at the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology, and Ms Lina Tzani, alumna of the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme, participated in the Health Plus Care Conference that this year took place in London, UK, on 27-29 June, 2017. The Health Plus Care Conference is the largest integrated health and social care event in Europe, which Mr Pavlidis and his team joined to assisted in the dissemination efforts of the HelpCare project findings. HelpCare is an Erasmus+ funded project that SEERC joined as a research partner. Both students represented SEERC and the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield excellently, contributing significantly in the work schedule of the HealthCare project in this event, receiving compliments by the whole HelpCare team. Mr. Pavlidis commented “This was an excellent teaching and learning opportunity delivered in a real setting for our students. Georgia and Lina had the chance to witness how a European funded research project operates and how a dissemination strategy is set and executed. The International Industrial Advisory Board Annual Meeting 2017
Bridging the gap between academia and industry On Thursday, 29 June 2017 the International Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of the Business Administration and Economics Department held its annual meeting at the main campus of the International Faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece. The Board which consists of 18 members, all well respected experts in the business world, meets in a plenary session once every year. Many interesting and challenging topics were on the agenda and discussed thoroughly during Board meeting. Overall, the Board commented on our programmes’ correspondence to the market’s needs and trends, adding that our students and graduates’ knowledge and skills is a great proof of our industry-led curricula. The Industrial Advisory Board of the Business Administration and Economics Department at the International Faculty, CITY College aims to facilitate communication and collaboration with the industry in the Balkan area, in order to meet the objective of developing high calibre graduates, well-equipped to pursue successful careers. Each member of the Advisory Board contributes a valuable professional perspective from years of hands-on professional experience. Thus, the Industrial Advisory Board enables the International Faculty, CITY College to keep abreast of regional and global trends and incorporate them in its mission and practices. The feedback that the Faculty receives from scientific societies, quality assurance agencies and students on educational, professional and research issues, is well-complemented by the valuable insight and guidance provided by the Industrial Advisory Board.

Mr Liassides and Ms Sfouri participate in Goethe’s ‘Cultural Management Academy’ in Thessaloniki
Mr Chris Liassides, Senior Lecturer and Director of Postgraduate Studies and Ms Violetta Sfouri, Senior Lecturer at our Business Administration and Economics Department participated as invited speakers in the ‘Cultural Management Academy’ organised by Goethe Institut in Thessaloniki, 26-30 June 2017. Mr Liassides suggested types of communication that make campaigns for the promotion of cultural projects effective and discussed ways to make the campaign messages stronger. In her presentation, Ms Sfouri talked about the necessary procedures that need to be followed towards an innovative approach in the creation of cultural content. Both presentations were particularly successful, attracted participants’ attention and generated interesting discussions. The well-attended Academy aims at engaging participants from both public and independent sector in an experience that will develop their capacity of understanding the context for cultural strategies, offer skills to work with public documents on cultural policies, and strengthen relations between the independent sector and the public one. Goethe’s Cultural Management Academy is supported by the International Faculty CITY College.

Prof. Psychogios delivers the second module of the Programme for Management Development in Kyiv
Entitled 'Neuro-management Change & Innovation', the second module of the ‘Programme for Management Development’ was successfully delivered on 24 June in Kyiv by Prof. Alexandros Psychogios, Lecturer at the Executive MBA of the University of Sheffield International Faculty and Professor of International HRM at the Birmingham City University (UK). The programme is run by the University of Sheffield International Faculty for the for the European Business Association (EBA) members jointly with ΕΒΑ. Prof. Psychogios discussed the common misconception that we only have one brain pointing out that the human brain has 36 grouped neurosystems which can be classified into 3 main brains: Action Brain, Thinking Brain and Emotional Brain. With references to brain science, behavioural science and modern management approaches, the speaker explained to participants that Neuro-management is a balance between meeting needs for organisational change and innovation and adapting to the internal and external contexts. The ‘Programme for Management Development’ will be completed with 6 modules. The programme aims at equipping professionals with skills and knowledge, which are required for meeting companies’ strategic objectives; understanding business as an integrated system in the interrelationship of organizational, financial, marketing decisions aimed at increasing business competitiveness. The University of Sheffield International Faculty is ‘educational partner’ of EBA, one of Kyiv’s key business associations.

Successful Workshop on Managing Complexity by Prof. Psychogios in Kyiv
Prof. Alexandros Psychogios, Visiting Lecturer at the Executive MBA of the University of Sheffield International Faculty and Professor of International HRM at the Birmingham City University (UK) delivered a very insightful workshop on ‘Managing Complexity and Chaos’ in Kyiv, on 23 June 2017. In his lively presentation Prof. Psychogios addressed today’s leaders’ challenge to achieve success in a complex and chaotic world, suggesting that business leaders should consider this complexity as a friend rather than an enemy. With this new perspective in mind the speaker introduced a modern way to management and defined 7 principles for managing complexity: 1. Explicit objectives. 2. Connection to the overall purpose (strategy). 3. Few & simple rules. 4. Defined boundaries of actions. 5. Continuous Feedback. 6. Freedom to act (autonomy to employees). 7. Tolerance & Continuous effort. Prof. Psychogios shared his insights, innovative ideas and approach to management with EBA members who also had the opportunity not only to attend a bright presentation but also to become a part of thought-provoking experiment. The workshop received very positive feedback by the participants who commented on Prof.Psychogios’ excellent presentation skills and the great insights he brought in the classroom.
