Continued success for ‘Psychology for all’ series
The ‘Psychology for all’ open lectures series organised by our Psychology Department sees continued success with interesting topics presented each week. Following the inaugural event, on 18 November, two interesting talks took place with increased interest by the audience. On 25th November 2016, Mr. George Polkas, Director of Thess Checkpoint and Sexual Health Nurse presented ‘From love to seropositivity and HIV. Being well-informed on HIV can change our attitude towards ourselves and others.” During his talk Mr. Polkas highlighted how important it is to change attitudes about people living with HIV and AIDS saying that this can only happen by being well-informed. Educated individuals have positive attitude and compassion towards persons infected which is an act of love itself. The third event of the series took place 2 December with Ms Stella Karapa, Psychologist, and Lecturer at our Psychology Department talking about a quite sensitive topic, that of pedophilia. With her presentation entitled ‘Pedophilia: Myths, reality and child protection’ Ms Karapa attempted to shed light on a subject that can often be a taboo. The speaker discussed how we can prevent hysteria over the subject, talked about what it is and how pedophilic behaviour can be detected and also shared with the audience advice on how we can protect children from sexual abuse. Both events touched delicate topics, were quite informative and were well-received and appreciated by the audience. The Psychology for all series will continue during December and January with more interesting topics. Stay tuned!
