The International Faculty CITY College supports DEVit Conference
The 360° Web Development Conference Sat 20 - Sun 21 May 2017 Thessaloniki, Greece The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, is proud to support DEVit 2017 as a ‘Gold Partner’. This is the third consecutive year that the International Faculty supports the DEVit Conference, a major web development conference in Greece and the broader region. The event will take place at the Royal Theatre of Thessaloniki while DEVit Workshops will take place at our main campus (Sofou building). Each year, DEVit brings together remarkable speakers and web developers from all over the world who share their knowledge, modern practices and techniques on Frontend, Backend, DevOps or Mobile. Our very own graduate, Ivo Nescovic, is among speakers and will deliver the following 2.5-hour workshop: Android: From Zero to Hero Sunday, 21 May 2017 Ivo Neskovic Workshop Description: The workshop deals with the design and implementation of applications for mobile devices using the Android operating system. Participants work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to deployment, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification. Participants are introduced to the programming environment for application development and have a hands-on approach to programming using the appropriate programming languages. A great #WeAreInternational VIDEO by our Students' Union (CSU)
The Students' Union (CSU) of the International Faculty, CITY College, joined the #WeAreInternational campaign of the University of Sheffield and created a great #WeAreInternational video, spreading the truly international dimension our Faculty. Our students put in their creativity, positive energy and came out to proudly say "We are International!" Enjoy their video! The International Faculty Receives Maximum Unconditional BAC Accreditation
The International Faculty has once again succeeded in receiving accreditation by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for Independent Higher Education, thus gaining maximum accreditation with no conditions, according to the BAC Report issued end of February 2017. The International Faculty underwent the BAC inspection in December 2016. It was carried out by a BAC Committee comprised of two inspectors and a student representative all of whom thoroughly reviewed a wide range of evidence. The criteria against which the International Faculty was evaluated include teaching and learning delivery and resources, educational provision and quality, institutional procedures, management, student welfare, premises etc. Following the BAC audit, reaccreditation was awarded to our Institution as it met BAC’s high quality criteria and requirements. As a result, the International Faculty will continue to carry BAC’s quality mark. As stated in the BAC Report, the International Faculty satisfied all 27 standards while requirements in all six areas of the BAC examination including Governance, Strategy and Financial Management, Academic Management and Administration, Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Student Recruitment, Support, Guidance and Progression, Premises, Facilities and Learning Resources, Quality Management, Assurance and Enhancement were fully met. BAC’s maximum accreditation is valid until June 2020. The International Faculty, CITY College, highly values, welcomes and seeks after such quality inspections by well respected accrediting bodies and organisations, as they provide a clear opportunity for the Faculty to prove not only its academic excellence but the overall quality and high standards of operation. BAC is a UK non-profit organization, established in 1984 to act as the national accreditation body for independent and higher education. BAC conducts a thorough inspection every five years, with an interim inspection after two or three years. More about BAC.

Our research centre, SEERC, at The World Business Angels Investment Forum 2017
Our research centre the South East European Research Center (SEERC) participated in The World Business Angels Investment Forum 2017 that took place on 13th and 14th of February at the Swissotel ‘The Bosphorus’, in Istanbul, Turkey. The Forum brought together key players of the equity market to debate the benefits and challenges for the angel investment community in achieving successful growth for businesses and to discuss what more can be done to connect the early-stage market ecosystem. The Forum hosted more than 100 global experts from over 60 countries and 5 continents. The South East European Research Center presented a report, provided insights into issues and challenges in that region. Contributors to the report include the South East Europe Research Centre, the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, and HeBAN. More specifically, contributors of the report were Prof. Panagiotis H. Ketikidis, Dr. Aristea I. Ladas, Dr. Fotis Gonidis, Dr. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger, Katerina Aichinger, Olga Athanasidou, Maria Giorgalli, Rafaella Paradeisi, Arvesa Studenica and Kyriaki M. Tsigarida who studied an innovative methodology charting the steps into start-up success and eventually, came up with the Altuntas Start-up Compass Theory. The theory was presented by Dr. Fotis Gonidis. On Monday, 13th of February the VIP reception and Gala Dinner of the Forum for the presentation of the World Excellence Awards took place, where our Prof. Panagiotis H. Ketikidis was named WBAF Greece Commissioner. On Tuesday, 14th of February, a professional tour to ITU Technopark, was organized. In order to explore Turkey’s approach to innovation and gain insights into the local innovation culture, in a course of the tour our colleagues visited the ITU startup pre-incubator, and ‘The Magnet’ scale-up incubator. Successful startuppers share their expertise with our postgraduate students in Athens
On Saturday, 11th of February, an interesting event took place for the MSc in Management of Business, Innovation and Technology students at Athens Tech College in Athens, Greece. Three successful entrepreneurs delivered insightful guest talks to our students, shared their expertise and generated inspiration. The first guest speaker, Mrs. Natasa Apostolidi from Orange Grove, talked thoroughly about the company’s services and goals, and gave examples of practical help and empirical data about the OG participants, teams and startups. She drew attention to the uniqueness of the space and opportunities the company provides. “Orange Grove” was founded by the Netherlands embassy in Athens, with the help of a number of Greek and Dutch corporate sponsors, charity foundations and universities. Orange Grove is a flexible working space / pre-incubator for startups. Next guest lecturer, was Mr. Georgios Gatos, well known from his active participation inpromoting entrepreneurship and innovation, through the Open Coffee Thessaloniki events. This time as “Workable” representative, he talked about the company’s business and revenue model, marketing, expansion and growth policy. The last guest lecture to address our students was another Greek startupper, Mr. Apostolos Apostolakis, who has associated his name with e-shop.gr, e-food.gr, doctoranytime.gr, taxibeat.com and many more. After a quick overview of the projects he has dealt with in the past he focused on his latest project as an investor at “Venture Friends”. He talked about VF latest investments and gave precious insight on what investors are looking for from a startup. The students found all presentations particularly inspirational while the event concluded with a discussion between students and guest lecturers. High profile and high energy entrepreneurs are often invited in the classroom to share their journey, their experiences, lessons learnt, inspire students and help them move from theory to practice. English Studies Department Autumn Semester Exam Boards and Pita Cutting
The end of every semester, at least for Staff and Faculty, is signaled by the Exam Board. The English Studies Department held its Exam Boards on February 21st, thus indicating the closure of the Autumn Semester. Overall, the academic staff was satisfied with performance of cohorts, reflecting at the same time on items that could be improved even more for the more elevated engagement of students. The Exam Board also posed as a great opportunity for the English Studies Dept New Year Pita-cutting event. Having gathered all faculty and staff together, each received his/her pita-piece pending the lucky coin. This year turned out to be the Head of the English Studies Department, Dr. Paschalia Patsala’s lucky year, as the coveted coin fell to her! The Exam Board and Pita cutting event ended on positive and warm notes with heartfelt wishes for strength and revitalised energy for the upcoming Spring Semester. We would thus like to wish all faculty, staff and students warm wishes for a Great Spring Semester!

Ms. Kosior and Ms. Sarantidou, from the English Studies Dept., in the 24th International TESOL Macedonia-Thrace Conference
Ms Margarita Kosior, a Lecturer of the English Studies Department, and Ms. Despina Sarantidou, a third-year BA student at the Department, participated in the 24th Annual International TESOL Macedonia-Thrace, Northern Greece Conference, where on 12 February 2017 they delivered a presentation titled “Designing Teaching Materials to Confront Modern-Day Slavery.” Photo credit: Dimitris Tzouris The purpose of the session was to empower other educators to produce teaching materials on issues they feel passionate about and to make them believe that through their own materials and their own work they can really change the world. To this end, in cooperation with The NO Project, Margarita Kosior and Despina Sarantidou presented a project assigned and completed within the scope of the Evaluation and Design of Teaching Materials unit. The NO Project is an award-winning, global, anti-slavery educational campaign which raises youth awareness on human trafficking and modern day slavery, addressing crimes such as commercial sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, but also forced labour involved in the production of our daily products, such as chocolate, tea or coffee. For the purpose of the assignment, students were asked to design a 50-minute lesson for students aged 16+ on the topic of human trafficking and with the aim to raise awareness of the crime of modern-day slavery. The best sample of student work would be uploaded to The NO Project website. During the first parts of the session, Ms. Kosior explained what modern-day slavery is, presented the scope of the assignment and described the nature of the collaboration between the English Studies Department and The NO Project. During the second part, Ms. Sarantidou described the process of creating her lesson that focuses on commercial sexual exploitation. She commented on the challenges of designing her materials and she reflected upon the whole experience and its benefits for her as a professional and a human being. Ms. Maria Gourmou, BA student of the English Studies Dept., wins the “Best Dissemination of SURE Project International Faculty” Award
Congratulations to our student Maria Gourmou on winning the ‘Best Dissemination of SURE Project, International Faculty’ Award, at the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Project Showcase that took place at the University of Sheffield, UK, on February 16th. Her project is titled “Semantic and Syntactic Ambiguity by English Foreign Language Learners” and it was successfully presented in the SURE scheme Showcase. The SURE scheme is a funded research opportunity offered by the University of Sheffield to Level-2 students upon selection. Within the framework of SURE Ms. Maria Gourmou—currently a third-level student of the BA (Hons) in English Language and Linguistics—designed, conducted and delivered a 6-week research project under the guidance of her Supervisor, Dr. Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Studies Department. Ms. Maria Gourmou at SURE Showcase “The SURE project was an amazing experience that offered me so much knowledge in my field of studies. I discovered my passion for research and identified the path that I want to follow after graduation. It is definitely a worthwhile experience and I urge all students to try it out!“ The Showcase welcomed a lot of students and displayed 120 projects with a variety of topics and innovative ideas. Every year the SURE Showcase is a celebration of all the hard work from the summer as it provides successful applicants with the opportunity to present their work, mingle and share ideas and opinions as well as exchange interesting conversations. An insightful seminar on Gamification by Mr Liassidis in Kyiv
On 2 February, Chris Liassides, Director of the postgraduate programmes of the Business and Economics Department at the International Faculty, CITY College, delivered an insightful seminar on Gamification in Kyiv in cooperation with the International Faculty’s educational partner in Kyiv, the European Business Association (EBA). In his presentation, entitled ‘Gamification: Engaging Employees and Customers’ Mr Liassides explained how gamification is used by brands to motivate employees, create healthy competition among teams, generate buzz or social proof, and encourage customer loyalty, among other benefits. The speaker suggested that with a variety of techniques – some easy to implement, some requiring advanced planning, coding, or technical expertise – any business can use gamification to get better results, no matter what the goals. The event attracted managers and entrepreneurs who had the opportunity to become acquainted with the concept of gamification and found Mr. Liassides' presentation particularly inspiring.

An exciting Ski Trip to Bansko by the CSU
Right after the examination period, our students traditionally set off to a short ski holiday to Bansko, one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts, to relax, enjoy the mountains and the slopes. The trip was organised by the CSU and took place 10-12 February 2017. A group of more than 70 students participated in the trip and enjoyed skiing, snowboarding and so much more. All students had fun and enjoyed this unforgettable experience!

Article by MBA student on receiving a SCTS Ionescu Scholarship for non-NTN doctors
Congratulations to our MBA student, Dr Andreas Paschalis on receiving a SCTS Ionescu Scholarship for non-NTN doctors. Dr Paschalis attends the MBA in Healthcare Management track in Thessaloniki. He is based and works in Manchester and flies once per month to Thessaloniki to attend the Executive MBA programme. Read the article he wrote below for a Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery bulletin about the scholarhips and his studies at the Executive MBA of The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. “As a clinicial all these years I have focused on my patients, their operation and their recovery. I was not really interested what was happening around my department, who was taking the decisions, who was paying for the material I was using, who was bringing my sterile instruments in the theatre and why as a department they should achieve target goals. Almost a year after starting the MBA I believe my wat of thinking in many aspects has changed. Keeping and evolving my surgical skills, I can now think more broadly and make suggestions about how my department should be operating.
