Our Students’ Union (CSU) raises awareness on World AIDS Day
On the World’s AIDS Day our Students’ Union (CSU) successfully organised an activity aiming at raising awareness on AIDS and HIV. The scope of the initiative was to support the cause and disseminate updated information about HIV prevention, it care and its treatment. During the day, information stands were set up in the main campus of the International Faculty, CITY College in Thessaloniki activating the level of our students’ interest. Our CSU made sure to put the message across that protection is the key in stopping the transmission of the disease. Students and staff who visited the stand, picked up their red ribbon to join the cause. HIV information flyers and condoms where also available at the stands. “Our aim was to inform the students on this very important issue, raise awareness, show solidarity and break some of the prejudices around sex, HIV and social stigma. Most of the people believe that AIDS and HIV don't necessarily concern them, yet around half of HIV+ people aren't aware of their status. Moreover, many aren't aware on the difference between HIV and AIDS, and that with an early diagnosis and proper treatment, HIV+ people can maintain the same, normal lifespan. That's why we worked with and promoted Thess Checkpoint as the go-to prevention and information centre, for free, anonymous, rapid HIV testing, and specialized counseling. During the event we handed over more than 700 condoms, together with hundreds of informative flyers and red ribbons”– said Vasilis Kikalos, CSU Welfare & Education Officer. The initiative was exceedingly welcomed by our student. Among others our Students Union (CSU) plans will be particularly focused on welfare oriented activities and events like this one.

Kick-Off Conference for MIGRATE in Budapest: a project coordinated by SEERC
MIGRATE : CTRL + EnterEurope: Jean Monnet Migrant Crisis Network The kick-off Conference of MIGRATE project (MIGRATE : CTRL + EnterEurope: Jean Monnet Migrant Crisis Network), project coordinated by our research centre SEERC, took place 5 December 2016 at the Central European University in Budapest with all partners participating. SEERC was represented by Dr Alexandra Prodromidou, MIGRATE Academic Coordinator. The MIGRATE Jean Monnet network focuses on the effect that the migrant crisis has on the socio-political and economic environment of the entry/transit countries and the way that this affects the process of and is being affected by the degree of EU enlargement and integration. The network addresses the question ‘To what extent can further EU integration and enlargement offer a viable solution to the migrant crisis?’ The countries under examination are a mixture of both EU and non-EU states forming one of the main corridors formerly used by economic migrants and refugees to reach Northern Europe. The goal of MIGRATE is to create a forum for debate and dialogue. A network of researchers from all the main transit countries is created with the purpose of looking at the specific characteristics of the migrant crisis experienced by different countries with different political economies, different relations to the EU and different levels of exposure to the current crises. Our research centre, SEERC, is the project coordinator of Migrate while participating partners are: Navarino Network (Greece) Bilkent University (Turkey) University of Sheffield (UK) Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (FYRMacedonia) University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences (Serbia) University of Graz (Austria) Central European University (Hungary) Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Germany)

Prof. Adam Piette and Dr Gabriel Ozon, from the Sheffield School of English, visit the International Faculty
The English Studies Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College recently hosted Prof. Adam Piette, Head of the School of English, and Dr. Gabriel Ozon, Lecturer in the School of English. Their 3-day visit (November 7-9) was an excellent opportunity for staff members of the Faculty as well as students to engage in productive discussions, share insights and further establish and promote collaboration between the School of English and our English Studies Department (ESD). Prof. Petros Kefalas, Dr. Paschalia Patsala and members of the International Faculty and ESD staff met with Dr. Piette and Dr. Ozon on various occasions to discuss the progress of the newly-established Department, the good practices implemented, together with various challenges that have been successfully overcome, but also to work on future plans. Both Prof. Piette and Dr. Ozon gifted all interested participants with two interesting Seminars catering to literary, cultural and linguistic appetites, which proved highly engaging, informative and granted participants with additional insight to areas of culture and language. More precisely, Prof. Adam Piette’s presentation titled “The Homeric Parallel in the Coen Brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou?” drew on M. Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope to illustrate intertextual allusive relations between Homer’s Odyssey, the Coen Brothers’ film, as well as Michael Longley’s Homeric poems so as to establish political parallels–surprisingly relevant with the recent U.S presidential elections–and demonstrate affective, bodily, cultural and aesthetic categories. Dr. Gabriel Ozon’s presentation, on the other hand, under the title “Information Structure in a Spoken Corpus of Cameroon Pidgin English” raised awareness towards Cameroon Pidgin English as only a spoken language, the need to provide a written form, the corpus method of data collecting and hands-on experience with the research conducted in this area of Linguistics, thus enlightening all participants towards the benefits, difficulties and more importantly necessity of relevant research. In parting, yet another visit proved beneficial as it confirmed the mentality of dialogue, networking, feedback, collaboration and more importantly the sense of community-building both within and across Schools and Departments of the University of Sheffield.

Mr Marin Troshanov Our Executive MBA student from Bulgaria, Mr Marin Troshanov presented his first novel in a very successful event that took place on 14 November at The National Palace of Culture in Sofia. Dedicated to literature, the event turned out as one of most successful ones that have taken place in the capital city of Bulgaria. Hundreds of people came with enthusiasm to support Mr Troshanov’s work, drawing a full house at the spacious art hall. During the event, the cover artist, the chief editor and the author himself gave a short welcome speech followed by loud applause. Talking about the book, Mr. Troshanov said: “The novel itself combines thriller, fantasy and noar elements in an intriguing mix. It is a beautifully written dark tale about love, loss and supernatural adventures that will equally excite and inspire you. The story is set in contemporary Bulgaria and evolves around the mysterious disappearance of a young girl and the obstinate attempts of her boyfriend Miro to retrieve her.” Two of the finest Bulgarian artists, namely, Mr. Peter Stanimirov and Mr. Vesselin Chakarov, combined efforts to visualize the storytelling in a distinctive and memorable way. Currently the novel is in Bulgarian language only but Mr. Troshanov plans to have it translated and reach international audience. The talented Bulgarian singer Nestynarka and another alumnus from the University of Sheffield Executive MBA programme, Mr Emil Todorov, who appeared to be a very skillful guitar player as well, cheered up all guests with their performance. Among the guests were many students from the Executive MBA programme launched last year in Sofia. The International Faculty warmly congratulates Mr. Troshanov and wishes him and his book best success!
