Dr Dimitriadis delivers seminars during his visit in Kyiv
During his visit in Kyiv mid October, Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis delivered two successful seminars in two different events. The first seminar entitled ‘How to create your personal brand an build a career’ was presented by Dr Dimitriadis at the educational fair ‘Education Abroad’ organised by STUDY.UA, the leading provider of study abroad programmes. The event took place 15-16 October in Kyiv. The second seminar was organised with the International Faculty’s educational partner in Kyiv, the European Business Association (EBA) on 18 October. The seminar ‘Selling to the Brain: Marketing in the New Era of Neuroscience’ touched upon the contribution of neuroscience in the marketing practices. Dr Dimitriadis discussed new ways in which companies can do marketing, communications and sales so that they can focus the right message to the right part of the brain and get results. Both events were well-attended while participants were impressed by Dr Dimitriadis’ presentation and unique presentation style.

Successful come-back for ‘Psychology for all’ open seminar series
Our Psychology Department re-launched for academic year 2016-17 the ‘Psychology for all’ open seminar series that has been running successfully at our main campus in Thessaloniki for the past few years. The opening event featured Mr. Evangelos Sepetis, Psychologist, Psychodynamic Therapist and Director of Postgraduate Programmes in Counselling Psychology at the International Faculty, CITY College, who held an insightful presentation on ‘When Self-love prevents love for others’. The event took place on 18 November 2016 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Mr. Sepetis explained that self-love is as natural and essential, as food and drink. However, being around people loving themselves too much that can definitely have an effect on us. He stressed out that self-love should not be confused with narcissism. In our days the word narcissism is wrongly used and linked to self-love. The speaker also went on providing an analytic scope of the narcissistic personality disorder and the primitive forces underpin. The event concluded with a vivid Q&A between the audience and the speaker. The series will continue to host 1-hour talks by different guest speakers specialising in different psychology areas who will be sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Dr Marina Mattheoudakis inaugurates the 2016-17 English Studies Department Open Seminars
It is with a dynamic, warm and thankful feeling that the English Studies Department initiated their first “ELT Methodology for All” series of Seminars for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students, staff members and visitors were fortunate to hear and learn about “The CLIL Method: From Europe to Greece” from Dr. Marina Mattheoudakis, Associate Professor of the Dept. of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Participants, who were able to attend the event either on the College premises or via live-streaming, were introduced to the CLIL Method (Content and Language Integrated Teaching). CLIL is an educational approach, inspired by the Canadian Immersion model of education, proposed and eventually adopted by Member States in Europe seeking to improve the European educational policy in general. Highly versatile and flexible, CLIL shifts away from traditional methods of teaching foreign languages, and poses as a significant alternative to stagnant teaching/learning methods. In light of the 8 key competences for Lifelong Learning of the European Framework, CLIL caters to the 4 Cs (Content; Cognition; Communication; Culture) every European must have in order to be a valuable, well-rounded individual and citizen of the world. As Dr. Mattheoudakis emphasised, recent research has demonstrated the multiple benefits which accompany the implementation of the CLIL method: the development of bilingualism within school education; the development of children’s cognitive skills; and the use and awareness of academic language early on. The CLIL method was first implemented in Greece in 2010 and more specifically in Thessaloniki in the 3rd Primary School of Evosmos–Experimental School. Under the direction and supervision of Dr. Marina Mattheoudakis, Dr. Thomai Alexiou and Ms Chryssa Laskaridou and with the collaboration and support of state school teachers and advisory directors, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and the Ministry of Education, the CLIL method has lead to impressive results over the past six years. School subjects, such as History/Mythology, Physics, Arts, and Physical Education were taught exclusively in English and the use of CLIL led to student engagement, stimulation, active and autonomous learning but also full immersion. During the presentation, sample videos posed as testimony to all the informative and impressive aspects Dr. Mattheoudakis so readily, clearly and enthusiastically presented about the CLIL method. It goes without saying that the CLIL method provides a solution to a language-centered versus subject-centered teaching dilemma. Due to its high potential, it can be viewed as an ideal method for teaching English, foreign languages and all matters of other subjects, enhance student skills, as well as equip educators and learners with the necessary tools to foster and enhance life-long learning and a love towards education.

A successful University of Sheffield Alumni event in Kosovo
‘Sheffield University for Kosovo: Developing People’ With more than 150 alumni attending, the ‘University of Sheffield Alumni Event’ in Prishtina entitled ‘Sheffield University for Kosovo: Developing People’ organised by The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, successfully took place, 9 November 2016 at the Sirius Hotel. Mr. Arsim Bajrami Minister of Education, Technology and Science of the Republic of Kosovo Mr. Yannis Ververidis Principal of the International Faculty, CITY College The event was opened by Mr. Kadri Veseli, President of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo - and University of Sheffield alumnus himself - who addressed a short welcome speech. Mr. Arsim Bajrami, Minister of Education, Technology and Science of the Republic of Kosovo was also among keynote speakers and addressed his own welcome to our alumni. Representing the International Faculty, CITY College, Mr. Yannis Ververidis, Principal hosted the evening and warmly welcomed all alumni and guests expressing his joy at reuniting with our graduates again. Finally, Mr. Miles Stevenson, Director of Alumni and Donor Relations at The University of Sheffield, UK, also welcomed all graduates and distinguished guests saying how happy he was to be able to join the event and celebrate with our graduates. The alumni awards were presented by Mr. Miles Stevenson. More specifically, Mr. Kadri Veseli received the Alumni Award for Leadership and Service, Ms. Ganimete Huruglica received the Alumni Award for Women Leadership, Mr. Arben Berbatovci received Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship, Mr. Lum Zhaveli received the Alumni Award for Achievement in Sports. Ms Huruglica’s and Mr Zhavelli’s awards were collected by Ms Hoxha, Country Manager for Kosovo of the International Faculty and Ms Jeta Zhaveli, sister of Lum Zhaveli respectively on their behalf. Celebrations continued over a reception that took place right after the awarding ceremony. On the occasion of the alumni reunion in Kosovo, the event aimed at celebrating the contribution of one of the world’s Top 100 Universities, the University of Sheffield, to the education of the people of Kosovo the past seven years. The International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo have been offering scholarships to students from Kosovo since 2009 aiming at actively promoting the proliferation of quality education by funding the studies of prospective students from Kosovo through scholarships. Today, many graduates from Kosovo have achieved success in their industries and communities through leadership, vision and determination. The event presented our graduates – most of them already successful members of the corporate world – with the opportunity to meet with each other, network and enjoy a social event full of fond memories and good times. Congratulations Dr Bofinger!
The International Faculty is happy to congratulate Mr. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger, on successfully defending his PhD on ‘Implementation of Innovative Green Management Methods in the Supply Chain: The Case of the Greek Manufacturing Sector’. Warm congratulations also go to his supervisors, Prof. John Cullen, from the Management School of The University of Sheffield, and Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice-Principal of the International Faculty, CITY College for their thorough work, guidance and support. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger has studied French, law, philosophy, business administration and economics at the Institut Catholique in Paris, the Eberhard-Karls University in Tübingen, the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University, and CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield. He holds an MSc in Information Systems. His papers have been presented at national and international conferences. He is managing partner of Wilhelm Bofinger GmbH & CoKG. He held the position of coordinator of European projects at SEPVE, the Association of IT Companies of Northern Greece. Later he worked as management consultant at the Incubator of Technopolis Thessaloniki ICT Business Park. He has been teaching a variety of Master and Bachelor courses at CITY College. In 2013 he took the post of project manager at SEERC. The International Faculty wishes Mr. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger best success in his future endeavours! “Pursuing my PhD has rewarded me with so many valuable insights and experiences. But what I treasure most is the amazing support that I have received from the people at CITY and Sheffield throughout my research. The Deputy Head of Mission of the British Embassy in Bulgaria at the MBA Induction in Sofia
Ms. Sarah Riley, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Bulgaria addressed a short welcome speech to our MBA students in Sofia on the Induction that marked the beginning of academic year 2016-17 for our Executive MBA programme in Bulgaria. The Induction took place on 3 November 2016 at Best Western Expo hotel in Sofia with. Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the programme opening the ceremony and welcoming students followed by Ms. Riley who gave a short inspirational talk being a University of Sheffield graduate herself. Later on, Mr. Ruslan Papazyan, who is also an Alumnus of The University of Sheffield, gave some hints to the new students on how to effectively combine and balance between their personal life, careers and their studies. Then Dr. Szamosi took over and continued the Induction with interesting activities aiming at helping students to get to know each other. After the Induction MBA students in Sofia attended the first unit of the course. The induction day is designed to provide a gateway to the MBA programme and prepare students for their studies.

Photo source: www.voria.gr During his speech Mr. Nikolaidis highlighted that one of the most critical success factors in businesses and organisations today is the right exploitation and management of human capital. “The right use of peoples’ skills is directly connected to providing quality customer services and thus vital for business development and success. A wrong corporate culture may prove to be destructive” he said an added: “The book is easy to read. It is an excellent tool to measure and evaluate employees’ skills and I would highly recommend managers and professionals not only to read it but also to critically think of the points raised. As far as the skills and competencies required, we all need to understand that the traditional educational system is over; and we need to reform not only our educational system but our value system as well”. The panels of speakers of the event also included Mr Athanasios Savvakis, President of the Federation of Industries of North Greece and Dr Miltiadis Sarigiannidis, Assistant Professor in Public International Law at the Law Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

‘Entrepreneurs Talk’ for business students
Five inspirational entrepreneurs participated as guest lectures in the ‘Entrepreneurs Talk’ event that took place on 4 November at our main campus in Thessaloniki, as part of the unit “Entrepreneurship and Small Business”. Representatives of five successful startups were invited to participate and talk about their experience to our business students. The speakers shared with the students their stories about their ideas and vision, the various steps, milestones, success and failure moments they faced. The startups that were showcased are the following Fieldscale (simulation software) Total Eclipse (game development company) Elektronio (handmade custom bicycles) Ergon Foods (premium quality Greek products & Greek deli restaurant) SociallGreen (recycling reward app) Students benefited from the opportunity they had to hear first-hand information, to meet the people behind the startups and connect their academic knowledge with the everyday life of actually running a startup. The event was organised by our Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre and comes in alignment with the Centre’s core mission to bring our students closer to the industry.

MBA student from Bulgaria reaches the finals of the European Business Awards for Environment
Mr. Stoyan Tachev Head of Project & Process Management and CSR Coordinator at BILLA Bulgaria Congratulations to our MBA student, from Bulgaria, Mr. Stoyan Tachev, who made it to the final round of the European Business Awards for Environment (EBAE) 2016/2017 with his company BILLA Bulgaria and the project on biodegradable waste. In the frame of the awards, Mr. Tachev, Head of Project & Process Management and CSR Coordinator at BILLA Bulgaria, presented a project on "Utilisation of biodegradable waste" which earned him a place at the finals. Mr. Tachev said about the project: “Since the municipality of Sofia’s biogas (electricity) facility started operation in January 2014, BILLA worked together with the facility to produce compost and biogas out of the waste they produce. This project has multiple goals: to reduce the waste that reaches landfill; to give a positive example of doing business in a responsible way; and to become a leader in integrating sustainability into the business model in retail.” BILLA Bulgaria, is the third largest food retailer in Bulgaria with currently 108 stores in operation. It is the only big retail chain in Bulgaria that cooperates directly with the biogas facility. In 2015 BILLA utilized 30% (626 metric tonnes) of all the waste it generated in Bulgaria. The long-term goal is to reach 100%, which will be possible when the waste-to-energy infrastructure is in place in all major cities in Bulgaria. Mr. Tachev added: “We couldn’t be more proud about this achievement. Making business with a strategic goal to improve environmental performance is within BILLA’s philosophy and making it to the finals of a European competition with one of our project is definitely a great reward. We do continue working with Sofia municipality to utilize bio waste (food after expiry date, rotten fruits and vegetables etc.).” The European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) recognises pioneers and celebrates companies at the forefront of eco-innovation, or which have a respect for the environment at the very core of their business principles.The awards are held every second year. Start-up founded by two SEERC PhD candidates receives €500,000 fund by the National Bank of Greece
Goodvidio, a startup founded by SEERC PhD students, and International Faculty graduates, Mr. Konstantinos Bratanis and Mr. Dimitrios Kourtesis, both graduates of the International Faculty, computer scientists and software engineers, announced a new fund of €500,000 by the National Bank (NBG Business Seeds) and Openfund. Goodvidio co-founders - Konstantinos Bratanis (left) and Dimitrios Kourtesis (right) The co-founders of Goodvidio, a service that helps online retailers increase their sales by collecting and integrating their video review pages from YouTube and other social media, also announced that having completed a year beta pilot applications in a wide range of online shops in Europe and America, and in categories like Technology, Health and Beauty, Sport & Hobby, Home & Garden, Baby Items, Food, Fashion Accessories and Auto-Moto, the service is now open and available to brands and retailers. Mr. Bratanis (PhD candidate at SEERC and graduate of the BSc Hons in Computer Science) and Mr. Kourtesis (PhD candidate at SEERC and graduate of the MSc in Software Engineering and Telecommunications) met while working together as PhD researchers at our research centre, SEERC, on cloud computing and intelligent information management, and started working on the development of an ecommerce video discovery platform in late 2013. In less than a year from incorporating the company, the startup’s team released a first version of its platform and launched a private beta programme that already includes major retailers and brands from across the world. It should be noted that this is the second funding received by Goodvidio, following the €300,000 seed investment received by JEREMIE Openfund II (www.theopenfund.com) in 2015. Also, among other awards, Goodvidio got the 2nd place at the Startup Weekend in Sheffield, in November of 2013.
