Mr. William Nash from the University of Sheffield, English Language Teaching Centre visits our English Studies Department
In accordance with its well-established mentality of Higher Education collaborations, the English Studies Department was pleased to welcome Mr. William Nash, the Academic Director of Teacher Training at the University of Sheffield English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) in the first weeks of the current academic year. Dr. Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Studies Department, Professor Petros Kefalas, the Vice-Principal for Teaching and Learning, together with members of ESD staff met with Mr. Nash during his two-day visit to the International Faculty. Being one of the largest university English language centres in the UK, the University of Sheffield ELTC supports around 3,000 students a year, offering classes, Departmental Language Programmes, online language support, a Dyslexia/SpLd Specialist Tutorial service, and a writing advisory service. With courses aimed at students who wish to attend the university, or who are already attending as well as members of the public, ELTC strives to offer all parties interested the very best of quality knowledge, skills, development and services. In continuation to Dr. Patsala’s visit to the ELTC last year, and as with all collaborations at their initial stage, the identity of the ELTC and the ESD had to be presented first in detail, thus signaling the common springboard for discussions aimed at two-way enrichment. The particular visit posed as a prime opportunity for the English Studies Department to exhibit their contribution to English Language Learning and Teaching both via their Departmental BA and MA programmes but also through their English Language Support Unit developed to help and support all students of other Departments of the International Faculty with regards to academic English and skills. With discussions reaching the conclusion of “being on the same wave-length,” this visit opened up avenues for future joint actions and verified the open-minded, enthusiastic and strong desire of both parties to share successful attempts, ideas, challenges, and solutions implemented, which actually depicts the productive nature of academic collaborations focused on moving forward together for the benefit and enrichment of all members involved.

Business alumni excel in International Undergraduate Awards 2016
Congratulations are in order to business alumni of the International Faculty, CITY College, Sanja Arsova (Skopje) and Dzhuliya Katsarova (Bulgaria), who excelled in the international Undergraduate Awards 2016 and were highly commended, ranking in the top 10% of submissions internationally with the papers they submitted. Both graduates are now in the shortlist as ‘Highly Commended Entrants’ to be announced as one of the 25 Winners. This is a great achievement of our graduates at an international level, considering that they are among the 12 students from the University of Sheffield that stood out of 5,500 submissions from all over the world. Both Sanja and Dzhuliya are recent graduates of our BA (Hons) in Business Studies (Accounting & Finance) programme. Their papers entitled "UK Recessionary Economy: The impact of increased money supply and government expenditure, analyzed under IS-LM-BP framework and Phillips Curve" and "The Impact of an Increase In The Money Supply and Government Spending In The UK Economy" respectively, were submitted as part of the assessment of the "Money and Banking" module for the Finance Track. Both students worked under the supervision of Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer at our Business Department. During their studies at the International Faculty, both Sanja and Dzhuliya made it to the department’s Head’s List while they received their degree with distinction. Ms Dzhuliya Katsarova "I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the CITY College, International Faculty of theUniversity of Sheffield and the academic staff for creating a vibrant, motivational, and positive environmental of enthusiasm for learning, and also encouraged personal and academic growth, and insatiable intellectual curiosity. I am grateful for having my lecturers as a guide, who created an environment that inspired my commitment to education, cultural and social awareness, and a room for making mistakes along the way. I feel extremely appreciative to be a recipient of the Undergraduate Award. This award is an important impetus for me to put every effort into maintaining the highest level of academic achievement during my upcoming postgraduate study at Durham University. I am very glad that my hard work has been appreciated. It is so meaningful to know that someone thought that you deserve an award. Awards are the tribute of our dynamism!" said Dzhuliya. Ms Sanja Arsova Sanja also commented on her success: "Considering that Undergraduate Awards (UA) is a global competition that this year had over 5 500 papers submitted, being selected among the top 10% in the Business category means a lot to me. This International recognition of my work, certainly contributed to my motivation and self-confidence in academic terms." Dr. Pavlos Gkasis warmly congratulated both graduates: “I would like to congratulate both Sanja and Dzhuliya for this great achievement. It is very rewarding to see that the work conducted during the semester as part of the assessment has led to such an important distinction. This depicts, initially, the commitment of our students towards producing high quality academic output, but also the contemporary character of our assessment material. Sanja and Dzhuliya have been two of the best students I have worked with in the past years and I am certain that they are going to excel either they follow a career in the academia or in the industry. Finally, I would like to wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.” As ‘Highly Commended Entrants’ our graduates have been invited to meet their fellow awardees at the annual UA Global Summit, taking place in Dublin, Ireland on November 8th-11th. The attendees will be addressed by the likes of NASA Astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, Shiza Shahid of the Malala Fund, MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abrahams, among many more speakers and facilitators. Ms. Kosior, the English Studies Dept. ELT Methodology Lecturer, in 'The Teacher' Magazine
Earlier this year, Ms Margarita Kosior was interviewed for “The Teacher”, a well-known magazine publishing articles on English language teaching methodology. Ms Kosior spoke about her decision to become a teacher, inspiring and motivating moments in her teaching life, her passions within and outside ELT, about professional development, but also about storytelling and incorporating social issues into language teaching, the two areas which are closest to her heart. As a skilled storyteller, Ms Kosior talked about the role of creativity and the importance of developing a multisensory environment for (very) young learners, in order to stimulate their senses and curiosity, and consequently improve their attentiveness. As a globally sensitive education advocate, Ms Kosior explained that our role goes beyond teaching vocabulary and grammar: “One of the things that makes my teaching heart sing (…) is when I know that my students are leaving the classroom having learnt something fundamentally important, and I do not mean the passive voice or reported speech. This is a difference between teaching and educating. If one student gets inspired, I have left a trace. (…) I hope and truly believe that the world of tomorrow can be different, can be better, thanks to a discussion in my class today. If one student walks out of my classroom with the decision to fight for a better world, my mission has been accomplished.” This belief in the power of education, educators, but also in the power of young people, our students, to change the world and to make it a better place, no matter how utopian it may sound in these challenging times, sounds reassuring but also leaves us all with a sense of great responsibility as educators. Having her “activist” background in mind, it came as no surprise that when assigned the role of the coordinator of the “ELT Methodology for All” Open Seminar series organised by the English Studies Department, the first presentation was titled “Social Issues in the ELT Classroom”. Passion for teaching is like a flame which starts with a flicker and keeps growing; this is how Ms Kosior describes her journey as an educator. Mr Liassides at the 8th MHRA International Conference & HR Expo 2016 in Skopje

The Boris Trajkovski Scholarship Award Ceremony 2016 in Skopje
On 28 September 2016 the twenty (20) Boris Trajkovski scholarship recipients were awarded their MBA scholarship during the Award Ceremony held in Skopje by Dr Gjorgje Ivanov, the President of the country. The scholars will have the opportunity to attend the prestigious University of Sheffield Executive MBA programme run by the International Faculty in Thessaloniki. The awarding ceremony took place the President’s Villa, in Skopje with Mr. Yannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty representing the University of Sheffield International Faculty, as well as Mr. Spiro Ristovski, Deputy Minister of Education and Science. It is the seventh consecutive year for the Boris Trajkovksi Scholarships to be offered and provide the opportunity to scholars to study for the University of Sheffield Executive MBA in Thessaloniki. The Boris Trajkovski EMBA scholarship programme was co-founded by the International Faculty and the country’s Government.

Successful seminar on Neuro-Coaching techniques by Mr Lambridis in Belgrade
Mr Nikos Lambridis, Head Coach of our Executive MBA programme, delivered a very successful seminar on neuro-coaching techniques in Belgrade. The event took place on 23 September 2016 at Hotel Falkensteiner and was well-attended by representatives of the business world. Entitled “Neuro-Coaching techniques to help senior leaders to make quality decisions and control their emotions’ the seminar aimed at helping leaders adapt to change in today’s fast-paced, rapidly shifting world, and review their formula of success in order not to miss opportunities for innovation and growth. During the seminar Mr Lambridis discussed what holds people back, by sharpening their self-awareness, focusing on the here-and-now, and finally understanding the value of “holding back” their emotions. In the frame of the seminar participants took part in two exercises: ‘Self-awareness in everyday life’ and ‘Control our emotions using NeuroCoaching techniques’ which they found particularly interesting. Participants were left with best impressions and found the seminar extremely useful and innovative.

Seminar by Dr Dimitriadis to students to Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University
During his visit in Ukraine, Dr. Dimitriadis, Director of Development at the Executive Development Institute (EDI) of the International Faculty, delivered a very interesting seminar to students of Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. Entitled "The Empathy Revolution: Connect with People and succeed personally and professionally", the seminar addressed the topic of empathy. Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis discussed the empathy deficit, species evolution and neuroscience in order to prove that deep connectivity is what makes us human. The speaker underpinned that humans need to cultivate empathy as is the key to better personal and professional life. Students found this presentation particularly interesting and generated a discussion with Dr Dimitriadis at the end of the presentation.

Dr Dimitriadis delivers seminars to members of European Business Association (EBA) in Ukraine
Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Director of Development at the Executive Development Institute (EDI) of the International Faculty, delivered two insightful seminar to members of European Business Association (EBA) in Kyiv and Odesa on the 9th and 22nd of September respectively. Both events took place in the frame of the collaboration between the International Faculty, CITY College and EBA. The fist seminar, delivered in Kyiv, was entitled ‘The Empathy Leader: How to Connect with People and Engage them at Work’. In his presentation Dr Dimitriadis discussed the important role of empathy in the contemporary working environment, stressing out that “Relationships are what make a company great, not procedures. Actually, relationships ARE the company.” According to the speaker, empathy within the business environment results in high-performing employees, as they look for, and value, relationships more than tangible benefits. He then described the three types of empathy and explained how they can be implemented at work. Dr Dimitriadis delivered a second seminar to the Southern Ukrainian Office of EBA in Odesa this time. EBA members had the opportunity to attend his presentation on ‘Brain Leadership: How to engage employees through neuroscience’. Dr Dimitriadis discussed myths concerning relation between the brain, leadership and management, explained how leadership really works in the brain as well as presented a comprehensive model for applying brain-based leadership. Both events were well-attended while participants found them very interesting and innovative.

SEERC and the International Faculty at the XIV Triple Helix Association Conference in Heidelberg
The International Faculty and its research centre, SEERC, were represented at the XIV Triple Helix Association (THA) Conference in Heidelberg, Germany (25-27 September 2016) by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis and Dr Adrian Solomon who presented a paper entitled 'A Quintuple Helix Framework for the Implementation of Low Carbon Supply Chains under Innovative Theoretical Convergence)', organized and moderated a session on EU Funding Opportunities and participated in the General Assembly of the THA by reporting of the progress of the THA Chapter of Greece. This year’s International Triple Helix Conference organised by the Triple Helix Association in cooperation with the International Triple Helix Institute is building a broad platform of academics and practitioners to address the local and the global challenges of our time. The conference organisers invite participants with a broad background and interests to join the debates and share findings from empirical research, experiences from policy interventions, and insights from knowledge transfer practice. Prof. Ketikidis and Dr Solomon met with key names in the field of triple helix interactions (i.e. Prof. Henry Etzkowitz - the initiator of the triple helix concept, Dr Dimitris Corpakis - EU Commission DG Research, innovations specialists, industrialists and other leaders in this field).
