15th Students' Spring Symposium
A great event for students by students On 20 May 2016 the CITY College, the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield successfully held for the 15th consecutive year the Students Spring Symposium with great student participation and interesting presentations. This year the Symposium was part of, and run in parallel with, the ‘Young Researchers Days’ event, an event that featured a series of research-related workshops. As always, the Symposium was organised for students by students being one of the major events and traditions of CITY College. With over 90 registrations the 8-hour Symposium took place with bachelors and masters students from all four departments of CITY College participating (it was the first time for the newly established English Studies Department to participate) as well as from Aristotle University and from the University of Sheffield, UK. The International Officer of Sheffield’s Students’ Union, Peggy Lim, visited our Faculty to participate in the Symposium in which she participated with a presentation. All students presented extremely interesting subjects over three sessions. The catchphrase that was established last year for the Symposium, “Have your say, Share your passion”, was reflected in all 15 presentations. In addition to the sessions, this year the Symposium hosted a Round Table discussion about the challenges and issues in doing a PhD, and a trip down memory lane with three alumni students who where part of the Organising Committee in the past. The three alumni, namely Ivo Neskovic, Aristea Ladas, and Nikoalos Tsokanos had travelled to Sheffield with Dr Dimopoulos, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department to present the Students’ Symposium back in 2011. The Symposium concluded with the best three presentations that won a prize from the event’s sponsors. Ali Honaramiz and his amazing presentation about empathy got the first prize of the Symposium. Sheffield Students' Union International Officer visits the International Faculty in Thessaloniki
CITY Students' Union (CSU) had the pleasure to host the International Students' Officer of Sheffield Students' Union (SU), Peggy Lim, during last week. Ms Lim participated in the 2016 Students' Spring Symposium and presented the award-winning #weareinternational campaign, as well as on the relationship of Sheffield SU with the students of the university's International Faculty, CITY Colelge and the CSU. This is the first time that a SU Officer participates in the 15 years of the event. Furthermore, our CSU Officers had the chance to discuss with her on the process of the ongoing SU-CSU integration, and both Unions assured that the newly elected Officers on both sides will continue to work towards our common goal for one united student body.

Workshop on “How to publish a paper” offered to the English Studies MA Students by Professor Kefalas
The month of May 2016 marked the inaugural “Young Researchers’ Days” event including but not limited to the annual Students Spring Symposium, Career Day and a host of workshops aimed at helping young researchers to develop necessary skills, pose their insightful questions and receive useful guidance. One of the Workshops organised within the framework of “Young Researchers’ Days” offered additionally to the English Studies Department students of the MA program in Applied Linguistics with TESOL on Saturday, May 21st, was conducted by the Vice Principal and International Faculty Director for Learning and Teaching, Professor Petros Kefalas, titled “How to Publish a Paper.” The aim of the workshop was to focus on how Postgraduate students and PhD candidates can be successful in publishing papers across various platforms including journals, conferences, workshops, newsletters, magazines and online platforms. A detailed timeline and a useful check list were presented, making young researchers aware of the steps involved, either as an individual researcher and author or co-author. Through self-reflexive questions, Professor Kefalas managed to make young researchers think of why publishing is important, what it offers to a researcher individually as well as to the wider community and what are the benefits of publishing papers, findings and research. The workshop emphasised the formal procedures that must be followed when publishing, thus highlighting skills that our students acquire throughout their studies, such as: time management and effective organization, collaboration, draft writing, publishing ethics, as well as receiving and responding to reviews and being critically reflective. Overall, within a friendly, welcoming and supportive atmosphere, Professor Kefalas successfully drew researchers’ attention to issues related to the benefits, difficulties and pitfalls one may experience when publishing. More importantly, the workshop as well as the wider context within which it was situated, demonstrated the willingness and guidance of Departments and Faculty members to inform and guide students of all levels, raising their awareness of what is to follow in their future academic and career endeavors by offering them the tools and insight that will guarantee a higher success rate.

CITY College Career Day 2016
Puzzle solved! More than 100 bachelors and masters students and 50 alumni participated in this year’s CITY College’s Career Day at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Themed ‘Solve your career puzzle, the event was organised with great success by the Student Affairs and Career Planning Department on the 19th May 2016, bringing together students and alumni of the International Faculty CITY College with more than 35 company representatives – at a local, national and international level - from a variety of industry sectors. Approximately 35 companies were present on the day of the event, interviewed students and graduates for full time and internship positions while at the same time helped them gain insight into the variety of career paths. Many different career positions were offered to soon to be graduates and alumni both for the local and international job market. In addition many employment agencies participated in the event, gave CV feedback and valuable advice to our students to help them become more competitive in the job market. Students and staff were received positive comments on their professionalism, subject knowledge and readiness for the very competitive job market. The Career Day comes in line with our Faculty’s strategic goals and mission for extroversion and connection with the industry. Workshop on 'Digital Literacy' co-organised by the English Studies Department and the Hellenic Association for American Studies
On Saturday May 14th, our English Studies Department, the Hellenic Association for American Studies (HELAAS) and the Multimodal Group (School of English, AUTH) joined forces and delivered a Workshop on “Digital Literacy in the Humanities: Media Explorations and Creativity in Education.” The event was addressed to undergraduate students of the English Studies Department, who actively participated in it with great enthusiasm. The four speakers of the event were Dr. Tatiani G. Rapatzikou (Assistant Professor at the Department of American Literature, School of English, Aristotle University, and President of HELAAS), Dr. Despoina N. Feleki, Ms. Katerina Marazi, and Mr. Thomas Mantzaris. The objectives of the workshop were to introduce students to certain key terms and issues pertaining to media and identity, visual narratives, print and digital convergence, transmedia, and participatory culture, and well as to practically engage them with a wide range of activities, involving physical and online material. Through this workshop, students were exposed to further directions of intellectual inquiry, broadening their research awareness and horizons, and enhancing their critical thinking skills. This Workshop marked the beginning of the collaboration between the English Studies Department and the Hellenic Association for American Studies, which undoubtedly opens up opportunities for student, academic and professional development in the future.

Dr Vivas and Dr Chrysochoou at the International Meeting of the Psychonomic Society 2016 in Granada
In the context of the Second International Meeting of the Psychonomic Society that took place in Granada in May of 2016, Dr Ana Vivas, Head of our Psychology Department and Dr Elisavet Chrysochoou, Lecturer at the Department and Academic Director of the postgraduate programmes in Neuropsychology, successfully presented their research work. Dr Ana Vivas was an invited speaker in the Symposium Linking Basic and Applied Science: The Case of the Differential Outcomes Effect, and presented work conducted in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for Alzheimer Disease and the University of Almeria (Spain) to investigate the effectiveness of a simple but powerful learning manipulation - the differential outcome procedure - to improve memory in healthy older adults and individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer disease. Many times applied science benefits from findings coming from basic science, and so the objective of this symposium was to illustrate how adapting a procedure coming from experimental psychology has been used to ameliorate learning and/or memory deficits associated with diverse pathological conditions. Dr Chrysochoou presented work conducted in the psychology lab investigating the effect of bilingualism on cognition in Greek-Albanian bilinguals. The Psychonomic Society is the home for scientists who study how the mind works. Members of the Society are experimental psychologists among whose numbers are some of the most distinguished researchers in the field. Violence through the lens of our English Studies Bachelor's students: A Poster Exhibition
The United Nations have established May 4th as the World Day against Bullying. In this direction, the English Studies Department has launched a Poster Exhibition on the theme "Wide-ranging forms of violence in the 21st century." The posters constitute the product of students' creativity in the 'Language Mastery' module, and offer diverse and valuable perspectives on the implications of violence, through visually engaging material. For the needs of this assignment, students are expected to select one form of violence, critically examine it and present it to their class, in the form of an oral presentation also aided by a poster they have crafted. We would, therefore like to invite students and staff members of the College to view the selected Posters in the Information & Learning Commons venue! The posters will be on Exhibition for the next 10 days. Special thanks are due to Mr. Thomas Mantzaris, the ESD Lecturer in charge of the specific assignment, as well as to the ILC Staff for hosting the Event.

Academic staff from our Psychology Department at 4th Cognitive Psychology Conference of the Hellenic Psychological Society (ELPSE)
In the context of the 4th Cognitive Psychology Conference of the Hellenic Psychological Society (ELPSE), Dr Ana Vivas, Head of our Psychology Department and Dr Elisavet Chrysochoou, Lecturer at the Department and Academic Director of the postgraduate programmes in Neuropsychology; currently coordinator of the ELPSE Cognitive Psychology Branch and member of the Conference Organizing Committee, along with Dr Aristea Ladas, Lecturer at the Psychology Department and Ms Vasiliki Salvari (BSc in Psychology graduate and current MSc in Neuropsychology student) successfully presented several studies challenging the so-called bilingual advantage in cognition, in the context of a relevant Symposium organised by Dr Chrysochoou. The symposium successfully accomplished its aim, offering the research community with valuable insight into bilingualism, a field with not only great theoretical and research interest, but also, with significant impact, of the societal, instrumental, and policy-making type. The conference offered opportunities for fruitful discussions with members of the national, as well as international psychological society on research topics of significant impact. Dr Vivas at the Founding Weekend Meeting of the Hellenic Society of Neuropsychology (ENPSE)
Dr Ana Vivas Dr Ana Vivas, Head of our Psychology Department, was one of the invited speakers to the first meeting in Athens of the recently founded Hellenic Society of Neuropsychology. As one of the few researchers in Greece working in the field of Cognitive Neuropsychology, Dr Vivas presented some of the work conducted in the department by the ReA2CH group (Research on Ageing, Affect, Cognition, & Health), which focuses on interventions (e.g., cognitive training) to promote healthy and active aging. Neuropsychology (Clinical and Cognitive) is an underdeveloped field in Greece, and thus the new Society has an important mission in promoting it. The International Faculty, CITY College offers one of the few programmes in Neuropsychology in Greece (with a Clinical and Research stream).

Young Researchers’ Days
19-21/5/2016 The Students Spring Symposium takes place this year as an event with in the first «Young researchers’ days». Other events include the Career Day and a series of workshops aimed at helping young researchers to develop needed skills. These workshops will take place on Thursday 19th of May and Saturday 21st of May. Places are limited and priority will be given to postgraduate students first and undergraduate students of the college on a first come first served basis. The aim of this workshop is to discuss tips on how UG, PGT students and PhD candidates can be successful on publishing papers. The workshop will not be discipline specific but will focus on issues that an inexperienced researcher tend to neglect, such as suitability of work to fora, scientific context, contribution and self-evaluation, clarity, structure, presentation, guidelines, to name a few. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to act as reviewers of scientific papers and use specific criteria to assess already published work. PhD students should arrange to meet with their supervisors during these three days.
