The International Faculty joins the British Ambassador in Prishtina on the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday

The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College joined the British Ambassador in his Residence where he held a gathering to present the activities planned to take place on the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday in Prishtina, Kosovo.   Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of the Executive MBA programme as well as Ms Hana Hoxha, Country Manager of the International Faculty in Kosovo attended the event among other distinguished quests. Masters students of Hotel and Tourism attend classes at luxury hotel premises

Linking industry and academia For the first time, postgraduate students attending the MSc in Management (Hotel and Tourism Management) had the opportunity to attend the fully restructured unit of ‘Strategic Hotel Management’ at the actual hotel premises of top hotels in Thessaloniki, namely, The MET Hotel, Hyatt and Domotel. Part of the unit includes presentations by senior hotel management staff, when classes are delivered at hotel premises, while the rest of the unit’s classes take place at the campus of the International Faculty, by Dr Giovanni Serafini, who is the unit leader. The first three classes have already been delivered on three separate dates (17 and 23 March at the MET hotel and 12 April at the Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki). The aim was twofold: first, to understand the way Human Resource Management functions in the business reality of a world-class five-star property; second, to offer the opportunity to our students to present to the management team the results of their research on specific business challenges related to HRM in hotels. Our students reported that their experience was particularly enriching due to the eager collaboration of Ms Georgia Routsou, HR Director of the MET and alumna of the International Faculty, CITY College, as well as of the whole MET hotel team. The second visit at the Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki was aimed at exploring the way hotel operations are managed in a leading world-class property. In order to put students into context, the visit began with a tour of the stunning premises under the guidance of Ms. Matina Nikita, Personnel Supervisor and a Sheffield University International Faculty, CITY College alumna herself. Dr Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department also commented: "Though strategic synergies with luxury hotels and resorts, we aim at better liaising with the job market and qualify and prepare the graduate of 2020. These collaborations prove to be truly beneficial to our students." Dr Serafini commented: "The Strategic Hotel Management unit stands out because it perfectly combines theoretical and practical knowledge. By drawing from the contribution of the lecturer's and managers' own professional experiences in luxury properties, students are prepared for the real world of hotel management." This initiative derives from and is in full alignment with the International Faculty’s philosophy to link the academia with the industry through partnerships involving leading hotel companies in the area. As the semester unfolds, the students are planned to visit The Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki (April) and Domotel (May).

Two members from the International Faculty at the Board of the Greek Computer Society (Macedonia - Thrace chapter)

Two staff members from the International Faculty, CITY College were elected as member of the new Managing Committee of the Greek Computer Society (Macedonia Thrace chapter). Dr George Eleftherakis, Reader at our Computer Science Department is the new Vice President and Dr Thomas Lagkas, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department was elected as Deputy Member of the Macedonia-Thrace chapter of the Greek Computer Society. Also, Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, CITY College serves as Emeritus President. Dr George Eleftherakis and Dr Thomas Lagkas Elections for the Managing Committee of the Greek Computer Society take place every two years by secret voting at the General Assembly of the members and it comprises of five members.  The Society aims at promoting the use of ICT and contributing to the development of scientific research and education in the ICT sector as well as representing and supporting the ICT professionals of the region in Greece and abroad and providing customised technical assistance to private and public authorities. The International Faculty is rather extrovert and highly involved in local and national organizations and associations, a practice that is inherent in the Faculty’s philosophy to liaise the academia with the industry and contribute the society overall. We wish all the best to our staff members in their newly acquired role and hope that they will serve it in the best possible way.   About the Greek Computer Society (Macedonia-Thrace Chapter) The Macedonia-Thrace Chapter of the Greek Computer Society is a scientific, non-profit society that was established back in 1985 in Thessaloniki with the dual aim to promote the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the regions of Macedonia and Thrace as well as to represent the ICT professionals of the region. The Macedonia-Thrace Chapter is an official annex of the Greek Computer Society which is based in Athens.

The International Faculty supports the Conference 'INNOVATION ID 2016'

CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield is among the sponsors of the International Conference 'INNOVATION ID 2016' organised by the Business & Cultural Development Centre - KEPA in collaboration with Design for Europe. Symposium on the European Migrant Crisis by CITY College and SEERC

The International Faculty of the University of Sheffield-CITY College and the South-East European Research Centre, with the support of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Navarino Network co-organized a Symposium titled ‘The European Migrant Crisis: Challenges of a fragmented corridor’, which took place on Thursday, March 31st 2016 between 14.30-21.00, at the Electra Palace in Thessaloniki. The event was under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Mr Nikos Zaharis, Director of the South-East European Research Centre and Ms Susanna Vogt, Head of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Greece, opened the event with welcome remarks. Event participants came from various universities and institutes both from Greece and abroad. Their presentations focused on analysing the socio-political and economic parameters of the Migrant Crisis inside the dynamic framework of current international developments. The goal of the event was to present to the larger audience of the city of Thessaloniki the particular socio-political and economic challenges faced by the countries of the Balkan Corridor and how these are affected by the current Migrant Crisis. The topics presented were linked to the influx of migrants in the Balkans, the closing of the borders and the consequences on bilateral relations between the Balkan states, the operation of illicit networks of human trafficking and illegal labor, the role of the European Union in solving the crisis, the role of Turkey as a country of readmission, as well as, the migration policies of Austria and Germany as destination countries. Dr Alexandra Prodromidou and Dr Pavlos Gkasis, lecturers at the Business Administration and Economics Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield-CITY College and Researchers at the South-East European Research Centre, set the research framework which formed the basis of the creation of this network of researchers on the Migrant Crisis, inside which the Symposium participants were called to present their analysis. Dr Dimitris Tsarouhas, Associate Professor and Acting Head of the Department of International Relations, Bilkent University, Turkey and Dr Dimitris Keridis, Associate Professor at Panteion University and Director of the Navarino Network, Greece, presented on the new reality being shaped in the two countries after the signing of the readmission agreement between the EU and Turkey. Dr Christina Krause, Coordinator for Migration of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Germany, presented the position of Germany on solving the Migrant Crisis within the framework of the readmission agreement. Dr Zoran Ilievski, Associate Professor at the University of St Cyril and Methodius, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Dr Jovan Teocarevic, Professor at the University of Belgrade and Director of the Belgrade Centre for European Integration, Serbia and Dr Andras Szalai, Researcher at the Central European University, Hungary, presented the main tendencies in approaching the Migrant Crisis in their respective countries. Dr Marko Kmezic, Researcher at the Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz, Austria, talked about the migration policy of Austria as a destination country.   Dr Ioannis Armakolas, Assistant Professor at the University of Macedonia and Head of the South-East Europe Program at the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), Greece, talked on the specific challenges that the countries of the Western Balkans face in relation to the Migrant Crisis. Dr Nicola Philips, Professor and Head of the Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, presented on the illicit networks of human trafficking and illegal labour linked to irregular migration. Dr Demetrios Papademetriou, Distinguished Senior Fellow and President Emeritus of the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, United States of America, commented through a recorded speech on the European Union migration policy. The closing remarks were delivered by Dr Dimitris Keridis.

Successful talk by Dr Kalyva on interpersonal techniques and social skills

Dr Efrosini Kalyva held a successful talk on ‘Interpersonal Techniques and Social Skills Training’ which took place in the frame of ‘Psychology for all’ series, on 6 April 2016 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The event drew a full house and shed light on the importance of good management of interpersonal and social skills. Dr Kalyva, Reader at our Psychology Department, talked about the difficulties that most people have due to poor communication in their personal and social relationships. The speaker elaborated on those difficulties based on the theory of the mind and on empathy. Throughout her presentation Dr Kalyva introduced techniques that people can use to face problems in interpersonal and social skills.  “Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups.  People who have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their professional and personal lives.” she commented. The audience found Dr Kalyva’s presentation particularly useful and informative.

CITY College Running Team at the 11th ‘Alexander the Great’ International Marathon

CITY College Running Team joined 20.000 road runners and participated in the 11th ‘Alexander the Great’ International Marathon, the biggest sporting event in Northern Greece. Our Running Team comprised of 44 runners from our Faculty’s student body, faculty and administration staff members who joined the race and enjoyed the experience to the fullest. Special congratulations go to our marathon runner, Christos Papadopoulos ex-staff member from the Faculty, who raced the 42km from Pella! The International Faculty warmly congratulates all marathon participants and its Students’ Union (CSU) for organising our participation and spreading the Marathon spirit!

Outstanding QAA report for the International Faculty, CITY College

The QAA TNE published an outstanding report on the International Faculty CITY College. The report followed a visit by QAA representatives earlier this year. The report is outstanding indeed and has a number of commendations that capture the essence of being a Faculty of the University of Sheffield. The model has been commended also in the overall report for TNE with Greece. Announcement of MBA Scholarships 2016-17 for FYR Macedonia students

Call for the "Boris Trajkovski" Scholarships 2016-17 for MBA students The Ministry of Education and Science and the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College are jointly offering full MBA scholarships for the Executive MBA programme running in Thessaloniki, Greece for the Academic Year 2016/17. The programme leads to the prestigious MBA degree of the University of Sheffield. The deadline for the application and submission of the required documents is 31 May 2016. Applications for Scholarships should be submitted to the Ministry.
