Our research centre, SEERC receives the Best Think-Tank in South East Europe Award
Our research centre, SEERC, received the Best Think-Tank in South East Europe Award at the World Business Angels Investment Forum that took place 21-23 February, 2016, Istanbul, Turkey. The prestigious award was awarded to SEERC in recognition to its significant contribution in building entrepreneurs and supporting startups. Our research centre competed against a variety of highly reputed names and achieved to stand out. Student Ski Trip to Bansko by the CSU
Right after exams our students set off to short ski holiday to Bansko, one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts, to relax, enjoy the mountains and the slopes. The trip was organised be the CSU and took place 13-15 February. A group of more than 70 students participated in the trip and enjoyed skiing, snowboarding and so much more. The trip was an exciting experience for all students.

Seminars on Leadership and Neuroscience by Dr Dimitriadis in Kyiv
Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Development Director of the Executive Development Institute delivered a series of seminars with great success in Kyiv. The first event entitled "Brain Leadership: How to Engage Employees through Neuroscience" took place 5 February, in Kyiv, Ukraine in the frame of the recently established collaboration between the International Faculty and the European Business Association (EBA). In his presentation Dr Dimitriadis discussed the relation between the brain, leadership and management underpinning that neuroscience techniques can be applied to leadership development. He also presented a comprehensive model for applying brain-based leadership. “Today’s managers need to make their brain ‘leadership-smarter’ if they wish to success in the leadership ladder”, said Dr. Dimitriadis. While in Kyiv Dr Dimitriadis delivered the same seminar to executives of Modern Expo Group, an international holding, leading manufacturer and supplier of store fixtures in Central and Eastern Europe - many of them attend our Executive MBA in Kyiv. The event took place in Lutsk, where the headquarters of the company are located. “Selling to the Brain: Marketing in the New Era of Neuroscience” was the title of the seminar delivered by Dr Dimitriadis to executives of Atlantic Group, of one of the bigger media groups in the region of Central Europe. In this seminar Dr Dimitriadis discussed how marketers should consider the brain and new insights from neuroscience when developing their activities and campaigns in order to be respected in their organisations and provide tangible and reliable results for their brands. Dr Dimitriadis also presented an interesting seminar on personal brading at the International Educational Fair 'Education Abroad' organised by STUDY Group on 6-7 February at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kyiv. Entitled ‘How to create you personal brand and find a job" the seminar was highly appreciated by the fair’s participants and received positive feedback. All events were well-attended and participants found the topics very innovative and resourceful.

Summer School on ‘The Migrant Crisis within the Greek context’
The International Faculty of the University of Sheffield-CITY College welcomes applications from undergraduate and graduate students for the 1st multi-disciplinary International Summer School on ‘The Migrant Crisis within the Greek context’ taking place in Thessaloniki, Greece from July 30th to August 5th 2016. The unprecedented migrant crisis in Europe has assumed massive proportions in the past year creating a series of knee-jerk reactions by various European states, including closing their borders and reconsidering EU agreements. Greece finds itself in the midst of this migrant crisis. Being in its 6th year of debt-infused social, political and economic instability, as a transit country on the Balkan corridor route and bound by EU agreements, like Dublin II, Greece is faced with the difficult task of dealing with myriads of migrants arriving daily on its shores. The main goal of the summer school is to put the migrant crisis inside a broader framework of multiple crises occurring in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans and help students understand the complexity of the matter and the obstacles or opportunities to finding a possible solution. The program does not have a strictly academic nature. It has been specifically designed to expose participants to the reality of this humanitarian crisis and the conflicting views on how it should be solved. The mode of delivery will be through a mix of lectures, guest speeches by policy makers and NGOs, as well as, practical on-field experience with a fieldtrip visit to a migrant camp at the borders with FYROM. Students will interact with migrants through volunteering on-site and will have the chance to witness first-hand the enormity of the crisis. After reflecting on their experience they will be encouraged to challenge the views and policies presented to them by policy makers and NGOs. At the same time participants will understand the constraints within which any policy is or can be implemented. Through in-class debates, students will have the chance to inform each other on different views on solving the migrant crisis and to discuss their opinions. By the end of the program students should be able to understand the dynamics among different levels of engagement with the migrant crisis (EU involvement, local authorities’ involvement, NGO involvement) and to critically assess and reflect on their on-site volunteering in the migrant settlement. The emblematic city of Thessaloniki, located in the north of Greece, provides the ideal backdrop to the summer school. Thessaloniki has a long history of integrating refugees and migrants through the centuries. Its multicultural experience is an amalgam of Greek, Ottoman, Jewish and Slavic populations, with Pontian Greeks being the most recent population to settle in the city after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. At the moment Thessaloniki is on the refugee route to the borders with FYROM and thousands of migrants find temporary refuge in the city. Participants in the program will be given the chance to explore Thessaloniki’s past and present through various activities. Congratulations Dr Dautov!
The International Faculty is pleased to congratulate Rustem Dautov, on successfully defending and receiving his PhD degree on ‘EXCLAIM framework: a monitoring and analysis framework to support self-governance in cloud application platforms’. Warm congratulations also go to his supervisors, Dr Iraklis Paraskakis and Dr Mike Stannett for their great work and support as well as Rustem’s examiners, namely, Dr Steffen Zschaler and Dr Dimitris Dranidis, for their thorough work. Rustem Dautov holds an MSc (Distinction) in Computing Science from Newcastle University (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK) and a BSc (Distinction) in Automation and Control Systems from Kazan State Technological University (Kazan, Russia). Before joining SEERC as a Research Associate under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network 'RELATE' in 2012, he had worked in the software industry in Russia for several years. His research interests are in the areas of Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing, Autonomic Computing, Semantic Web, Big Data and Internet of Things. His PhD research focuses on the application of the Semantic Sensor Web technologies to create a data monitoring and analysis framework to support self-governance in cloud application platforms delivering a reliable Internet of Services. Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, Unit 1
The Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CiLT) is a course specifically designed to meet the needs of staff new to higher education teaching. On the 25th until the 29th of January, a class for the first unit of CiLT, entitled "Effective Learning and Teaching Environments", took place and it was attended by 14 colleagues of the International Faculty. Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of a Masters-level Certificate by the School of Education. CiLT is formally accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and graduates become Fellows of HEA. Dr Nigel Russel and Dr Karen Ford, both Professional Development Managers for Learning and Teaching offered a unique experience to colleagues who attended the unit who characterised it as "a well-organized, interactive and informative, clear and supportive in its instructions and guidance, as well as diverse in activities and peer members/groupings, with Nigel and Karen very inspiring and supportive". Nigel and Karen also presented the University's new Learning and Teaching Professional Recognition Scheme (LTPRS) which supports academic and administrative staff to acquire Fellowship directly by the Higher Education Academy. Workshop by Dr Szamosi for the Albanian Association of Banks in Tirana
Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of our Executive MBA programme delivered an insightful seminar to the members of the Albanian Association of Banks in Tirana. Entitled “Supporting Employees Through Organizational Change in The Banking Sector: A Means to Top-Line Growth”, the event took place successfully on 27 January 2016. The event aimed at providing information to participants in relation to creating a supportive organisational climate in the banking sector that can produce more productive and efficient employees and managers and at equipping participants with a toolkit of ideas that will positively impact employees and managers. In his lively presentation Dr Szamosi particularly discussed a key element, the support for change in today’s organisations and divided his presentation into three main sub-components: dealing with resistance to change, supportive management techniques, and supportive change management behaviours with an emphasis on Generation X (Millennials) now coming into industry. The event was well-attended while participants reported that they found Dr Szamosi’s presentation particularly useful.

Dynamic collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia
The International Faculty is happy to announce a dynamic collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia. The two parties joined their forces aspiring to organise educational activities and promote quality education. In the frame of this cooperation two educational activities have already been launched and will be running throughout the academic year: the 2016 AmChamps Class and the Sheffield AmCham Insights. Educational Partner of the 2016 AmChamps Programme This year the International Faculty will be acting as Educational Partner of the ingenious AmChamps programme run by the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia. Participants of the AmChamps Class 2016 -23 talented young students and 23 junior managers of Amcham member companies - will work in pairs to develop practical business skills in a mentor-mentee relationship. The programme will be completed in three rounds. As Educational Partner the International Faculty will follow the progress of the competing teams, offer support and deliver seminars as part of their training. At the end of the programme a series of scholarships will be offered the to the winning and finalist teams by the International Faculty, CITY College. Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Development Director of our Executive Development Institute addressed a short welcome at the opening event of this year’s AmChamps class that took place 27 January in Belgrade. Sheffield AmCham Insights Our cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia has another strand namely, the ‘Sheffield AmCham Insights’. The Sheffield AmCham Insights is an Expert Seminar Series delivered to the AmCham members as part of their vocational training. Two seminars have already been delivered with great success, the first by Dr Dimitriadis and the second with Dr Alexandros Psycholgios, Lecturer at our Executive MBA programme. The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, is very proud for this new, very promising cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia which is in line with its aspiration to work towards connecting academia with the industry through strong alliance with top companies and organization in the region of South East and Eastern Europe. Dr Kalyva’s book on Autism among the top 12 autism-related books in the US
'Autism: Educational and Therapeutic Approaches' by Dr. Efrosini Kalyva Dr Efrosini Kalyva’s book on ‘Autism: Educational and Therapeutic Approaches’ has been selected among the top 12 autism-related books in the US by the academic journal ‘The Alert Collector’ in the related article ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Guide to the Latest Resources’. The author, Michele Frasier-Robinson, Librarian for Education and Psychology and Assistant Professor at the University Libraries/University if Southern Mississippi, lists the selected reference sources and books after consulting book review sources as CHOICE: Reviews for Academic Libraries. About Dr Kalyva’s book she comments: “Among the interventions discussed are cognitive-behavioural approaches, sensorimotor approaches, and biochemical approaches. Stating that this is not simply blueprint of therapies, Kalyva encourages parents, educators, and practitioners to think critically about the effectiveness of chosen treatments and adjust them to the needs of the individual. Each chapter includes a series of questions for discussion”. Congratulations to Dr Kalyva on the assessment of her book. Kick off meeting of the NetMIB Project
On 26 January, the kick off meeting of the newly assumed research project, the NetMIB took place at the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Pécs, Hungary, with all partners attending. Organised by Zsolt Bedo, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Pecs, the meeting included the presentation of the project, research questions and expected study results. Dr Anastasios Karamanos, Lecturer at the Business Department, also attended the meeting, representing the International Faculty and SEERC. Dr Karamanos commented: “It was great to kick-off the meeting at the historic city of Pecs, Hungary. Pecs is the fifth largest city of Hungary, located on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the south-west of the country, close to its border with Croatia. The history of higher education in Pécs dates back to the 13th Century A.D. when the University of Pécs was founded, which has grown to become one of the most famous, prestigious institutions having a leading role in regional education. It has ten faculties which cover the full spectrum of high-quality higher education. The Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Pecs is a dynamic and growing Faculty with a leading contribution to driving economic growth in the region and solving sosioeconomic problems with education and civil engagement. With excellent people, facilities and culture they set the foundation of NetMIB project with great success.” The project intends to establish a transnational entrepreneurship ecosystem that can support the development of entrepreneurial skills of participating persons (students, faculty members, business professionals, public servents), while creating innovative solutions that are able to solve some regional, national or international socio-economic problems. The NetMIB project involves researchers from five countries, namely Italy, Greece, Spain, USA and Finland.

Prof. Kefalas publishes new book on Logic programming
Prof. Petros Kefalas Congratulations to Professor Petros Kefalas, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, on his recently published new book entitled ‘Logic Programming Techniques’. The book’s co-authors are Mr. I. Sakellariou, Mr N. Vassileiadis, and Mr. P. Stamatis. The book, published by the Hellenic Academic Libraries Link, is an electronic textbook accessible to all students. It is in Greek since it was funded by an EU programme aiming to enhance electronic libraries for Greek Universities. Logic Programming is one of the most interesting and challenging schools of computer programming. It differs from the norm! It makes you think out of the instructional box. It is applied in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Understanding and Semantic Web. “It has been many years now I teach Logic Programming. I am proud that after so almost a quarter of century, me and my good friends, colleagues at other HE institutions of Thessaloniki, have finally made it! It was a joined effort, a dream come true for all of us who loved the way Prolog represents and solves problems. Simplicity, soundness, othogonality, ..., anything one could expect from Logic. After all "a programming language that does not affect your way of thinking is not worth knowing". Prolog indeed makes the difference!! said Prof. Kefalas.
