The International Industrial Advisory Board Annual Meeting
Bringing academia even closer to the industry. On Monday, 14 December 2015 the International Industrial Advisory Board of the Business Administration and Economics Department held its annual meeting at the main campus of the International Faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece. The Board which consists of 16 members, all well respected experts in the business world, meets in a plenary session once every year. Many interesting and challenging topics were on the agenda and discussed thoroughly at the Board meeting. This year the meeting’s agenda particularly focused on latest trends and developments in the business world, aiming at identifying future trends and incorporating them in our academic programmes. Proposals on enhancing even more our learning and teaching, by taking under consideration the market changes and the current and future needs of the corporate world were put on the table along with identification of the attributes and personal characteristics, soft and hard skills necessary for a successful career. Mr Athanasios Savvakis, Chair of the IAB and President of Federation of Industries for Northern Greece commented: “It was a very productive meeting with many innovative ideas. All members felt that their contribution towards enhancing the academic programmes of the Business Administration Department was appreciated and that it significantly helps the Department to continue offering high quality education.” The Industrial Advisory Board of the Business Administration and Economics Department at the International Faculty, CITY College aims to facilitate communication and collaboration with the industry in the Balkan area, in order to meet the objective of developing high calibre graduates, well-equipped to pursue successful careers. Each member of the Advisory Board contributes a valuable professional perspective from years of hands-on market experience. Thus, the Industrial Advisory Board enables the International Faculty, CITY College to keep abreast of regional and global trends and incorporate them in its mission and practices. The feedback that the Faculty receives from scientific societies, quality assurance agencies and students on educational, professional and research issues, is well-complemented by the valuable insight and guidance provided by the Industrial Advisory Board.

Executive MBA Induction Days 2015
Thessaloniki – Bucharest – Belgrade – Sofia – Kyiv MBA Induction Days marked the beginning of academic year 2015-16 for our Executive MBA programme in all five countries where it currently runs. During Induction Days students in all countries had the opportunity to meet their classmates and some of their professors. The induction days have been designed to provide a gateway to the MBA programme and prepare students for their studies. Donate food. Help a family.
9 – 17 December 2015 Today many families with children, elders and homeless people need our help. For this reason, we are collecting food and other items in order to support the Food Bank of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Help us collect food and basic necessities. Donate a bag of food and offer a meal to a family in need in our community. What to donate:* Dry food with long expiration date (pasta, beans, lentils, milk, sugar, flour, rice, etc.) Olive oil or Seed oil (1lt) Canned food Disposable shaving machines Laundry detergents (small packs) *All products should have long expiration dates and must be in small packs for easier dissemination Collection points: You may bring your donation on the 9th – 17th December 2015, from 11:00 - 18:00 hrs to one of the two buildings of CITY College, the University of Sheffield International Faculty in the city centre. Students from CSU, the Sunrise Movement and the Marketing Club will be at the collection points, collecting all donations and offering their valuable help and assistance. 1. The English Studies Department hosts presentation on Corpus Linguistics by Dr Gabriel Ozon
Dr Gabriel Ozon, from the School of English University of Sheffield, delivered a very informative Presentation on Corpus Linguistics hosted by the English Studies Department during his visit at the International Faculty for the Graduation Ceremony 2015. His presentation, which took place on 20 November 2015, was entitled “Building a corpus of an unwritten language: Methods and challenges” and focused on the application of quantitative (corpus linguistics) techniques in order to extract patterns and conditions of use from authentic data. Dr Ozon’s teaching and research have engendered a keen interest in linguistic variation, and along with Melanie Green (Sussex) and Miriam Ayafor (Yaounde I), he is conducting a Research Project, supported by a British Academy/Leverhulme Grant, aiming to build a corpus of Cameroon Pidgin English (CPE). The event was attended by a great number of postgraduate and undergraduate students and staff of the English Studies Department, and was followed by a vibrant discussion with the audience.

Prof. Ketikidis at the 9th Conference on Innovation and Development
Professor Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty CITY College participated as invited speaker in the 9th Conference on Innovation and Development that took place on 7 November 2015 in Thessaloniki at the MET Hotel. Prof. Ketikidis participated in the panel “Connecting Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship’ where he talked about the ‘Triple Helix’ noting: “We should move forward and replace ‘I’ with ‘We’. Innovation cannot be achieved in Greece without synergies’. In his presentation Prof. Ketikidis said businesses, academic and governments should work together towards sustainable growth adding that political turbulence and taxation in Greece are making potential investors reluctant. The one-day conference took place with great success with many distinguished speakers participating in the various panels. The International Faculty, CITY College was among the event’s supporters.

Dr Pavlos Gkasis at the 4th Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs
Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) chaired a panel on “Greece and the Eurozone” at the 4th Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs. The Symposium took place in Thessaloniki on Sunday 18 October, 2015 and it was the second year that it was co-organized by SEERC the South-East European Research Centre of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield along with Navarino Network, the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, NATO, and the American College of Thessaloniki. Dr Gkasis in round table discussion on the Role of Democracy in a Social Market Economy
Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) participated in a round table discussion on the role of democracy and the social market economy. The discussion was co-organized by the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Greece on Monday 23 November, 2015. Professor Thomas Apolte, Professor for Political Economy at the University of Münster, and Dr. Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC) presented their view and research on how political and economic freedom can help or hinder democracy. Professor Apolte, focused on the role of democracy in the social market economy while Dr. Gkasis on the role of democracy in the contemporary global economy. The event was very successful and included a vibrant discussion with the audience. On Tuesday 24 November Dr. Gkasis gave an interview at Praktoreio 104,9 radio station discussing the event and the recent developments in the region. More about the event.

Company visit to Epsilon Net by students of the Business Department
A group of 2nd Level undergraduate students from the Business Administration and Economics Department had an eye-opening experience when visiting the headquarters of Epsilon Net in Pylaia, Thessaloniki on Tuesday 1 December. Mr. Dimitris Petkousis, HR & Internal Communications Manager, and Mr. Miltos Vafiadis, Chief HRM Analyst, richly illustrated the operations of a leading software and online applications company in Greece. Since the visit took place within the Organisational Behaviour unit, students were exposed to a real success story in Greek cutting-edge entrepreneurship and were able to realise first hand how important it is for a company with an innovative corporate culture to achieve high levels of interaction and communication among its structures which positively reflect on productivity, staff engagement, sales and brand awareness. In fact, it is no coincidence that Epsilon Net has received a Best Workplace Award in Greece for 2015 and has succeeded great growth rates even in the current times of crisis.

‘Psychology for all’ kicks off with talk on ‘Happy Ageing’ by Mr Pavlidis
‘Psychology for all’, the successful open seminar series of our Psychology Department, kicked off for academic year 2015-16 with an interesting talk on Ageing by Mr George Pavlidis, PhD Candidate at SEERC and Lecturer at the Psychology Department. The event took place on 2 December 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. With his insightful presentation Mr Pavlidis George addressed a number of misconceptions about ageing, including that: being older than 50 is accompanied by the catholic decline in abilities, the prevalence of negative emotions, and the dominance of illness. The speaker explored why ageing as a process is not the sum of inescapable routes endured passively throughout life. Rather than that, there are reasons why one should be grateful of being able to age, in a manner that allows to claim one's own life at any age. The series will continue to host 1-hour talks by different guest speakers specialising in different psychology areas who will be sharing their knowledge and expertise with a varied audience.
