Distinguished alumni speeches at the Graduation Ceremony

7th edition of the Balkan Venture Forum (BkVF) in Zagreb, Croatia
The 7th edition of the Balkan Venture Forum (BkVF) takes place in Zagreb, Croatia on December 3-4th, 2015. It presents a great opportunity to showcase two current trends in the Balkans: the quality of the thriving Croatian startup community and the second development phase of the regional innovation ecosystem with new funds, incubators and more mature startups. The Croatian eco-system has marked several success stories from this perspective, the most outstanding being the ones of Bellabeat (a Croatian-Slovenian pregnancy aid app that successfully attracted investment worth $3 million) and Farmeron (a web data service that help farmers keep track of their farm’s performance). Apart from launching innovative businesses, the Croatian community has also indulged into founding many organizations and events that help nurture the startup spirit in this European country. ZIP, Netokracija, CRANE, StartupCamp, Shift are the key representatives of this category. Since 2012, Balkan Venture Forum (BkVF) has been helping establish a thriving Balkan's startup ecosystem. Its bi-annual event schedule already brought the regional innovation community to Skopje, Belgrade, Sofia, Tirana, Sarajevo, and Nova Gorica. Alongside the other early regional players, such as Launchub and Eleven, we have also witnessed the steady development of the region in the past few years with the following progress: A regional community has been established; Local innovation communities have come into existence at various locations; Competences on local and cross-regional startup acceleration(SuperFounders) have been built; A second wave of better financed and more experienced funds have appeared; The program of this edition focuses on showcasing top innovation startups from the Balkans to regional and global investors. Therefore it will be dominated by pitching sessions of the Startup competition and excellent networking opportunities for all attendees. Over 100 active investors are expected to attend and scout for investment, presenting a unique opportunity for the best startups from the region. This year’s BkVF will be the host of the Pioneers of the Balkans' final pitching competition of about 70 startups from the area in front of over 100 investors from the region, Europe, and all over the world. The University of Sheffield Deputy Vice-Chancellor joins Alumni Reunion in Bucharest
The University of Sheffield Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shearer West, warmly welcomed more than 100 alumni who reunited in the Alumni Reunion in Bucharest. The event was organised by The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, and took place on 18 November 2015 at the Hilton Hotel. Dr Megakils Petmezas, Vice-Principal of the International Faculty also welcomed our alumni to the event and was joined by Mr Tom Rhodes, Head of International Relations of the University of Sheffield and Ms Maria Matiaki Director of the Student and Alumni Affairs Department of the International Faculty who also participated in the event. There was a great atmosphere throughout the event where our alumni had the opportunity to our alumni to reconnect, share their diverse experiences and news, share memories from their study time and have fun. The alumni reunion was organised in the frame of the formal celebration of the Graduation Ceremony 2015 that followed in Thessaloniki on 21st November 2015. Graduation Ceremony 2015
Watch the Graduation Ceremony Saturday, 21 November 2015 saw the grand graduation ceremony of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, that took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. In this special celebration more than 200 Bachelors, Masters and PhD graduates from more than 20 countries, who completed their studies at the International Faculty, were presented their awards by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, before 1500 guests. The graduation followed the same academic procession as the University of Sheffield’s ceremonies in the UK. In his speech Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, congratulated all graduates and commented: “Although we are in one sense a world away from the Victorian red-brick buildings of Sheffield, you are in every sense our graduates and you carry the good name of The University of Sheffield into your careers and your futures. Today is a day of celebration and for you to feel a deserved pride in what you have achieved.” Professor Sir Keith Burnett was joined by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West, and other senior academic colleagues from the British university. Mr Yiannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty CITY College also delivered a speech during which he addressed the graduates: “In these difficult times, we are absolutely confident that all of you have the knowledge, the skills and the capacity to meet the sophisticated demands of this new era. You possess the qualities to be highly successful yourselves and at the same time contribute to building a better future for the society at large”. In the frame of the ceremony Dr George Eleftherakis, Reader (Associate Professor) and Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou, Senior Lecturer, both from our Computer Science Department, were honoured to receive a 'Senate 'Award of Sustained Excellence in Learning and Teaching' by the University of Sheffield in recognition of their exceptional and inspirational teaching skills and their valuable contribution to students' learning experience. Postgraduate students visit Bansko
Students attending the postgraduate course “Strategic Marketing” participated in a trip to Bansko on November 14,15 visiting hotel Premier Luxury Mountain Resort, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, located at the foothill of the Pirin Mountain. This visit was organized in the context of the course project, which is the development of a Marketing Plan for Premier Luxury Mountain Resort for the period 2015-2016. In this project students will address the problems managers face in marketing planning, develop an in depth understanding of the factors that influence marketing strategy and apply the tools that are available to marketing managers for successfully developing a marketing plan. This project has the characteristics of junior consulting. Upon completion of the marketing plans the best three groups will have an opportunity to present their work to the company’s management at an event that will take place at our premises in Leontos Sofou, with the best team getting an award.

'The Role of Democracy in a Social Market Economy' by SEERC and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung
There is an ongoing debate among both economists and political scientists on whether, if any, democracy promotes growth or growth promotes democracy. The tradition of the German Ordoliberalism, which is the intellectual foundation of the concept of the Social Market Economy (SME), has always claimed an interdependency of political and economic institutions. Throughout the discussion we will analyze the theoretical relations between political and economic freedom in general and those between a Social Market Economy and democracy in particular. The British Ambassador in Kyiv hosts “The Sheffield MBA Experience Day”
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and the UK Trade and Investment Department of the British Embassy in Kyiv held successfully “The Sheffield MBA Experience Day” on the 15th of October, in Kyiv. The event took place in the residence of British Ambassador and aimed at promoting the exciting opportunity offered by the University of Sheffield’s Executive MBA programme, as a gateway to top-quality leadership skills and achievement. The event was opened by welcome speech of the HIM British Ambassador Ms. Judith Gough who expressed her pleasure to be hosting a presentation of this academic programme to the Ukrainian and international business community in Kyiv and highlighted the important and special role that the University of Sheffield plays in training managers, professionals and business owners through its EMBA programme delivered in Kyiv since 2010. Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Lecturer of the EMBA programme and Director of Development of the Executive Development Institute presented an unconventional and constructive seminar entitled 'Leadership and the Brain’ which participants found enlightening and inspiring. He also talked about the EMBA programme as unique opportunity for educating business leaders. During the presentation two MBA alumni shared their study experience with the seminar’s participants and provided valuable advice for prospective students. The University of Sheffield International Faculty delivers the Executive MBA programme in Kyiv since 2010. More than 70 managers and professionals from Ukraine have chosen to attend the University of Sheffield’s EMBA programme, in Kyiv.

Seminar by Dr Dimitriadis on Personal Branding in Kyiv
In the frame of an Educational Fair in Kyiv Dr Nikolaos DImitriadis, Director of Development of our Executive Development Insitute delivered an interesting seminar entitled "How to brand yourself and get a job around the world". Dr Dimitriadis led a no-slides, no-nonsense presentation that utilized carefully-curated online material from companies, job seekers and related experts to showcase that every job candidate in the world can become a strong brand, and a sought-after employee by employers and recruiters. The seminar was very successful and was well-attended by the Fair’s visitors.
