Congratulations to The 2015 Sheffield Graduate Award Winners!
Warm congratulations are in order for our graduates – 11 this year! - namely, Keqa Alba (BA Hons in Business Studies), Neagu Laura Claudia (BA Hons in Business Studies), Papadopoulou Sofia (BSc Hons in Psychology), Trasanidis Charalampos (MSc in Management), Salvari Vasilki (BSc Hons in Psychology), Gavri Maria (BSc Hons in Psychology), Kristina Karatoli (BSc Hons in Psychology), Agushi Genc (BSc Hons in Computer Science), Barbu Miruna Karmen (BSc Hons in Psychology), Dermentzopoulos Apostolos (BA Hons in Business Studies), Ntotsi Paraskevi (BSc Hons in Psychology) who are this year’s Sheffield Graduate Award winners. To meet the award criteria students worked in parallel to their studies, undertook extracurricular initiatives and expanded their skills and knowledge by getting involved in a variety of valuable activities. Indicatively, some of the activities they participated in involved: charity initiatives and community volunteering, the Annual Students’ Spring Symposium, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and other initiatives and events of the International Faculty. They also presented substantial work experience and worked on various international projects while some of the winners acted during their studies as class representatives. Upon the completion of their studies they managed to accumulate the number of hours necessary for the Sheffield Graduate Award. The University of Sheffield introduced this award wishing to produce graduates with distinctive qualities that every typical Sheffield graduate should have, such as drive for personal growth and self - improvement, enterprise and life skills development. This prestigious award brings an extra dimension to their qualifications, enriching their personal development and substantially boosting their career prospects. Our Executive MBA now in Sofia!
Sofia is the new destination for our Executive MBA programme. We are happy to announce that The University of Sheffield Executive MBA offered by the International Faculty will start running in Bulgaria from this academic year and on, making Sofia our fifth teaching location along with Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest, and Kyiv. Mr George Efstathiadis, Director of our Executive MBA programme said: “The decision to run our MBA in Bulgaria has been one that we have been considering for a number of years. We have always had excellent Bulgarian candidates in our programme and we now look forward to directly expanding our executive education in the country.” Managers and entrepreneurs from Bulgaria who will attend the programme will keep the benefit of integration and networking with managers from throughout the region while getting the benefits of convenience and cost. Congratulations Dr Panagiotidou!
Congratulations are in order for PhD candidate, Ms Despoina Panagiotidou, who has been awarded her PhD after successful defense of her thesis on "Visual Attention and Emotion: the deleterious effect of ignoring an object in the subsequent emotional evaluation". Supervised by Dr Ana Vivas, Head of our Psychology Department and Dr Tom Stafford from the Psychology Department at the University of Sheffield, UK, her PhD was focused on the distractor devaluation effect of selective attention. Despoina completed her bachelors studies at our Psychology Department before continuing with her PhD. Congratulations again Despoina! We wish you continued success!

Prof. Ketikidis invited as External PhD Examiner for our alumnus, Ivan Miroshnychenko, at Sant'Anna School, Italy
Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, was invited as external PhD examiner at the defense of the PhD of our alumnus, Ivan Miroschnychenko, at the Italian university Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. Ivan was awarded his PhD on ‘Corporate Governance, R&D Investment and Firm Growth’ with high distinction. His thesis was supervised by Professor Roberto Barontini. Having completed his postgraduate studies at our Business Department, Ivan Miroschnychenko proceeded with PhD studies in the field of his choice, aiming at enhancing his academic profile. The community of the International Faculty, CITY College warmly congratulates Ivan on his achievement and wishes him the best for his future endeavours! Ivan commented: "I am very happy to have successfully completed my doctoral studies in Management! My experience of working towards an international PhD degree in Pisa has been invaluable. The main factor in deciding to pursue my doctoral studies at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies was the status of a small and elite educational institution. The opportunity to collaborate with various international partner universities of the School both broadened my experience and allowed me to benefit from the knowledge of diverse range of colleagues. Successful Summer Schools at the International Faculty in Thessaloniki
Three amazing summer schools, that run in parallel, marked the end of summer 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Built on the success of the previews years, this year’s summer schools, brought together students from the University of Sheffield, UK, the International Faculty, Greece as well as other countries like Serbia, Kosovo, Armenia, Romania and Bulgaria, creating a truly international dimension. Themed, ‘New Media, New Tech-tools, New Opportunities: from Pinterest to LinkedIn’, ‘Developing an International Employability Profile’ and ‘Cognition and Emotion’ the summer schools included daily classes, excursions to cultural and natural sights, as well as other activities which added a different dynamic to the learning experience. The third summer school was jointly organised by the Psychology Department of the University (UK) and the Psychology Department of the International Faculty (Greece) and was attended only by psychology students studying in two departments. As part of the summer school programme students to relax and spend a day on the sandy beaches of Chalkidiki on an daily excursion organised by the International Faculty. The summer schools concluded with a field trip to Vergina, the internationally famous burial site of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Feedback from students illustrated how the summer schools offer an opportunity to get a taste of studying in Thessaloniki and the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield and get a flavour of the Greek summer while studying a subject of their interest. One student that attended the Summer School said: “I mostly enjoyed the panel interview; it was a unique hands-on experience! I had the opportunity to "compete" with other candidates in fully realistic conditions. Another Summer School milestone was the interview preparation with Dr. Nikolaidis, who shared with us his rich personal experience, which motivated me in a big way!” while another added “I enjoyed the lectures, since they covered interesting topics. I also enjoyed meeting new people with different cultures and backgrounds. But the most wonderful experience for me was the visit to Vergina.” The summer schools at the International Faculty proved to be a truly international, educational and cultural experience to all participating students. 10th South East European Doctoral Student Conference
Following the successful organization of the nine previous conferences, our research centre, SEERC organised the 10th Annual South East European Doctoral Student Conference (DSC 2015) on 17-18 September 2015 with great success. The event took place at the main campus of the University of Sheffield International Faculty in Thessaloniki. The keynote speaker, Professor Ian Douglas delivered his speech entitled “Developing Doctoral Research education for the 21st century: interdisciplinarity, community and impact”. Sixty 60 PhD students and young researchers came together to present their research, exchange ideas and collaborate between disciplines. With its programme divided in four thematic areas (Research tracks), the aim of the conference was to further facilitate the exchange of knowledge between young researchers and to consolidate the established network of scholars currently undertaking research in South East Europe. The Doctoral Conference brought together researchers and succeeded in establishing collaborative links between disciplines, for testing the ground with innovative ideas and for engaging the wider academic community. All papers presented during the event will be included in the conference’s proceedings and indexed in EBSCO DATABASE.

Launch of REINVEST project by our research centre, SEERC
The kick-off meeting of the REINVEST project (Research & innovation between the EU and India in the field of environmentally sustainable transportation),undertaken by our research centre, SEERC, took place in Loughborough (UK) during 21-22 September 2015 where the global partnership set the key strategy for the next 3 years of the project. Adrian Solomon (Project Manager for REINVEST at SEERC and co-author of this project’s grant) provided during the meetings, a key strategy for ensuring proper implementation and achievement of REINVEST’s indicators – as SEERC’s role in the project is to provide the key fundament on which all the activities will be developed. The international consortium is composed of key universities from UK (Sheffield, Loughborough), Italy (Padua), Greece (SEERC) and India (IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay). REINVEST addresses the societal challenge of environmentally sustainable freight transportation by providing industries with a tailored benchmarking and decision support tool for incorporating related best practices in their operations and business models. The research performed by the consortium will be infused to the industry through various global co-creation workshops. The immediate next steps for this project consist of the organization of one co-creation workshop in Mumbai (India) where India’s industry needs in terms of sustainable transportation will be assessed and best practices from EU industries will be presented.

The 7th Meeting of SEERC’s International Advisory Board (IAB) in Thessaloniki
The International Advisory Board (IAB) of our research centre, SEERC, held its annual meeting on 11th September 2015 in Thessaloniki. Baybars Altuntas, a global entrepreneur from Turkey and best-selling author, participated for the first time in the meeting as he was recently appointed as Advisory Board member to contribute to SEERC’s strategic orientation and efforts to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in South-East Europe. Mr. Altuntas is EBAN Vice President & TBAA President & World Entrepreneurship Forum’s Ambassador to South East Europe & JCI Ambassador. This year's meeting reviewed achievements and discussed new ideas and plans for the near future. The members suggested new directions and opportunities for research and commented on the research projects that SEERC undertook or were recently completed. The mission of the International Advisory Board is to consider all strategic issues and actions necessary to support and develop the achievement of SEERC goals. Members, joining forces from different sectors and countries of South East Europe and the UK provide guidance and insight with regard to the research priorities of the region, funding opportunities and networking with researchers, policy makers, business leaders, and potential funders.
