Relaunch of CITY ehelp: Our online counselling service is back!
Our Psychology Department is delighted to relaunch its revamped online counselling service, CITY ehelp. Aiming at continuously improving the service, the website of ehelp underwent major facelift while at the same time the counselling service was revised and new possibilities and features were developed for ehelp’s users and visitors. Dr Suzie Savvidou, Supervisor of ehelp and her team is happy to welcome again ehelp’s users and offer help and support. In support of society’s wellbeing, CITY ehelp is offering online psychological support free of charge and is open to everyone. The service was initially launched in 2010 and has been running successfully ever since. The English version of ehelp is under construction and is expected to be launched soon.

Online course for students interested in digital and social media marketing
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in association with other four European Universities developed a 6 week online state of the art digital and social media marketing massive online open course (MOOC). The MOOC development is part of a European Founded project (JEMSS) that aims to develop a Joint Masters in Digital and Social Media Marketing. The MOOC and the JEMSS project complement the already strong portfolio of masters provided by the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. These include among others the MA in Digital Marketing and Social Media delivered in Thessaloniki and Bulgaria. Congratulations to Dr Lazuras on publishing his new book on the Psychology of Doping
Congratulations to Dr. Lambros Lazuras, Lecturer in the Psychology Department and researcher at SEERC, on his recently published book entitled “The Psychology of Doping in Sport”. The book is published by Routledge and draws together cutting-edge research on the psychological processes underlying doping use in sport and exercise. It aims at contributing to the understanding of this important issue in contemporary sport. “This book is a result of a lot of hard work and at least one year of continuous writing and editing. Dedicated to all students and colleagues who shaped my thinking and research skills over the years at CITY College.”, says Dr Lazuras. Dr Lazuras teaches social, occupational, and introductory psychology units at the International Faculty of The University of Sheffield, CITY College. His research focuses primarily on the application of psychological theories of decision-making and goal-setting in public health and workplace settings. Dr Lazuras has contributed many academic articles and papers in well-respected journals and other publications (Full list of publications). MBA Scholarships for 'Next Generation' competition winners in Bulgaria
Aiming at promoting continuing education at executive level, the International Faculty, CITY College, offered a series of scholarships for its Executive MBA programme to winners of the ‘Next Generation Manager Competition 2015’ that took place in Bulgaria. More than 60 young managers and entrepreneurs participated in this years ‘Next Generation’ competition - the majority coming from IT and finance - and competed against each other based on their CV and career achievements. Mr Stefan Tsanev, Operations Director at MentorMate, is the big winner of the seventh Next Generation competition, organised by “Capital” and “Karieri”. Mr Tsanev is leading the company’s team in Bulgaria and has greatly contributed to its expansion over the past few years. The winner received the “Next Generation Manager for 2015” award as well as a full (100%) scholarship for our Executive MBA programme offered in Thessaloniki. The competition’s runner-ups, Mr Vladimir Boyadzhiev, Managing Director of the digital agency Despark and Mr Vladimir Dzharkalov, owner of ‘Twisted Jiu Jitsu’ sports club, will be awarded partial (50%) scholarships for the EMBA programme. New Training programme in Healthcare Management in Skopje
The first module for the new 2015-16 Training Programme in Healthcare Management was delivered in June 2015 in Skopje. The programme runs by the University of Sheffield International Faculty and the Managers Academy and it is supported by the Ministry of Health. Entitled “Care Excellence, Effective Communication and Patient Behavior in Therapy Adherence”, the first module was led by Mr Nikos Lambridis, Top Management Executives Certified Trainer and Coach, and was aimed at middle-level managers from Public Healthcare Institutions all over the country. Delivered successfully over 3 weekends at the Medical Faculty in Skopje, the module attracted more than 150 participants. M Lambridis analysed today’s challenges in the medical community and discussed behavioral keys in patience care. In his presentation he also spoke about the critical activity of effective communication in difficult conversations (SPIKES). The module concluded with topics related to patient behavior in therapy adherence and covered issues like motivational interviews, transactional analysis and positive thinking. Participants were left with best impressions and found the training programme extremely useful. “I am very satisfied by my participation to this programme. What I learnt will help me a lot in my work. I can already think and approach differently the patients I work with. I big thank you to Mr Lambridis!”, a trainee comments while another adds: “Although I spend my weekends exclusively on relaxation and playing with my 3.5 years daughter, the 400 km I drove to attend this wonderful workshop were all worth it. I am especially thrilled by the lecturer and all things learnt during the training programme”.

Dr Szamosi Receives Emerald Excellence Award as Outstanding Reviewer
Congratulations are in order for Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Executive MBA programme, on having been chosen as an Outstanding Reviewer for Baltic Journal of Management in the 2015 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence. The award comes as global recognition of Dr Szamosi’s significant contribution as reviewer of academic articles throughout 2014. Graduation Ceremony 2015
CONGREGATION FOR THE CONFERMENT OF DEGREES AND THE PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMAS AND CERTIFICATES Thessaloniki Concert Hall Saturday, 21 November 2015 The University of Sheffield and its International Faculty CITY College, are going to host the Graduation Ceremony for Diplomas and Degrees that will take place on the 21st November 2015 at 11.30 at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. The awards will be presented by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, who will be accompanied by academic colleagues from the University. At the ceremony, graduates will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor of the University and receive their degree certificate. More than 200 Bachelors, Masters and PhD graduates who completed their studies at CITY College will be awarded their certificates from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, Professor Sir Keith Burnett. During the ceremony six distinguished alumni will be awarded in recognition of their outstanding career achievements. The graduation will follow the same academic procession as the University of Sheffield’s ceremonies in the UK. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the foyer of Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Four Psychology students are awarded research funds to work as research assistants over the summer
Join the study as a bilingual participant and get a monetary compensation! Four Psychology students have been awarded research funds by the COEUS scheme, which supports collaboration between the Psychology Department at the University of Sheffield, UK and the Psychology Department at the University’s International Faculty, in Thessaloniki, Greece. The students will work over the summer as research assistants in two important research studies entitled “Understanding How the Brain works in Greek-Albanian and Greek-English Bilinguals” and “Self-conscious emotions in schizophrenia patients”. Understanding How the Brain works in Greek-Albanian and Greek-English Bilinguals Vailiki Salvari (Level 3, BSc Psychology) and Chrysanthi Koniou (MSc in Counselling Psyhcology) have been awarded research fund to work as research assistants and collect data during June and July in a unique project that aims at measuring brain activity using EEG (a non-invasive method to record brain electrical activity from the scalp) in Greek-Albanian and Greek-English bilinguals. This project is lead by Dr Elisavet Chrysochoou, Dr Yanjing Wu, and Dr Ana Vivas in collaboration with the Lab of Medical Physics of Aristotle University. Wish to join this project? If you are Greek and speak English at a high proficiency level, or you are a Greek-Albanian bilingual enroll in the study as a participant, and get a compensation of 10€ ! Self-Conscious Emotions in Schizophrenia Patients Maria Gavri (Level 3, BSc Psychology) and Martha Natsi (Level 2, BSc Psychology) have been awarded research fund to work as research assistants and collect data during June and July in an innovative study to investigate self-conscious emotions (shame, guilt, pride, self-disgust) and cognitive function in schizophrenia patients. This project is lead by Dr Ana Vivas and Professor Paul Overton in collaboration with our alumna, Dr Fenia Kalogeropoulou, and the Psychiatric Clinic Agia Fotini in Larissa.

Academic Staff from the School of English of the University of Sheffield visit our English Studies Department
The Applied Linguistics Colloquium, organised by the English Studies Department (ESD) of the International Faculty on 12-14 June 2015 in Thessaloniki, hosted Academic Staff from the School of English (SoE) of the University of Sheffield. Our guests (Prof. Susan Fitzmaurice, Prof. Andrew Linn, Dr Gabriel Ozon, Dr Jane Mulderrig and Dr Oksana Afitska) became well acquainted with the ESD structure and programmes, as well as their fellow colleagues in Thessaloniki. During the Colloquium all local and guest participants had the opportunity to exchange practices, opinions and expertise, as well as to explore joint research potentials for developing a closer and more productive collaboration between the two departments. In the context of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, guest academics were introduced to the structure of the BA and MA programmes at ESD and were presented with examples of good practices that have been successfully implemented during the first year of ESD operation. Among various issues, participants have extensively discussed the way the undergraduate programme has operated, the courses offered, the profile of student body, methods of assessment and monitoring of student progress, various good teaching practices and their learning outcomes, etc. In addition, the structure, function and content of the ESD Master’s programme were thoroughly discussed, with insight offered from both sides. On similar grounds, School of English academics shared their experience and know-how from their own programmes regarding course content, allocation of staff resources, time management, handling large numbers of students, etc. Recognizing the MA as the spearhead of any department, both SoE and ESD academics expressed their satisfaction with this exchange of ideas and knowledge. Recognizing Research as one of the cornerstones of the Applied Linguistics Colloquium, a number of key collaboration scenarios addressed. During the visit, Mr. Nikos Zaharis offered a detailed presentation of the South-East European Research Center (SEERC), projects that have been undertaken, sources of funding, and, most importantly, the mode of cooperation that SoE and ESD could design and develop. Moreover, both the SoE guests and the ESD staff presented their personal research interests, targeting common areas for potential collaboration in developing innovative research ideas. Both Departments expressed a strong willingness to explore a number of available avenues that are within the diverse research profiles of their individual members. Overall, the commitment shown from both sides to establishing ongoing research bonds between colleagues in Thessaloniki and Sheffield is expected to strengthen and consolidate cooperation by building several research-related communication bridges in the near future. As a general overview, all participants were greatly satisfied with the marked progress and the outcome of the two-day colloquium, both on a departmental as well on an individual level. The English Studies Department was more than pleased to open its doors to guest academics from the School of English, with the aspiration that the knowledge shared by the two departments has set solid foundations for a regular exchanging of expertise in both teaching and research within the coming years.

Our English Studies Department launches ‘ELT Methodology for All’ Open Seminar Series
A new series of seminars organized by our English Studies Department was inaugurated on June 4th with an event on “Social Issues in the ELT Classroom.” The audience composed of both ESD students and staff, but also external guests, as well as online viewers, had the opportunity to listen to two presenters approaching the topic from different angles. Dr Luke Prodromou, our guest speaker, delivered a very interactive and entertaining session entitles “Social and Global Issues and the Language teacher. From Dickens to Debt; The Current Crisis and its Consequences from a Critical Pedagogy Perspective” in which he discussed the negative impact of the debt crisis and the power of the free market on education, child labour, human trafficking and gender equality. Inspired by Charles Dickens, Dr Prodromou talked about the power of education in the fight against inequalities and he called on teachers and educators to take action against social injustice through their teaching. Ms. Margarita Kosior, Lecturer in the English Studies Department, took over with her talk under the title “Teaching for Social Justice: From Social Context to Teaching Content.” In face of serious global issues and social injustice, such as poverty, war, modern-day slavery, and many others, English Language Teaching has acquired a new dimension. Ms. Kosior’s presentation looked into how the new social context can be used in ELT and turned into engaging and thought-provoking teaching content, using materials ranging from reading passages to digital resources, and engaging students in tasks from reflective writing and oral presentations to silent discussion and poster preparation. During their sessions, both presenters suggested some practical ways in which ELT can raise awareness of social issues. With the added responsibility of not merely preparing students for certification exams, but equipping them with tools to become responsible world citizens, teachers are turning into educators with a mission of making the world a better place. Utopian and cliché? Possibly, but definitely a possibility to live into. After this successful beginning, the Methodology for All Seminar Series has concluded for the academic year and will resume in October, 2015. The events are aimed at current and prospective foreign language teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, the ELT community in the wider area of Northern Greece, and online viewers able to access the sessions through live streaming or by watching the recording of each seminar.
