The International Faculty supports DEVit conference
DEVit, the first and only Web Development Conference in Greece took place successfully in Thessaloniki and the International Faculty was proud to be among its supporters. The conference was attended by IT programmers and programming and web applications’ enthusiasts who had the opportunity to attend presentations from twelve world-class speakers and specialists like Christian Heilmann, Mathias Bynens, Jeff Nickoloff and Dr. Heinz Kabutz, who came to Thessaloniki to share their expertise in frontend and backend development, security and testing. Students from our Computer Science Department also attended the event and were impressed by the presentations. The University of Sheffield International Faculty was among the event’s sponsors. Participants had the opportunity to get information about the new masters programmes in Software Engineering: MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Security), MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Telecommunications) and MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Web and Mobile Applications) that are going to be launched in academic year 2015-16.

Dr Kalyva talks about children at the 2nd event by the International Faculty and YMCA
The focus of the second event jointly organised by the International Faculty and YMCA in Thessaloniki revolved around ‘children’, a very timely and popular topic for today’s parents who wish to be informed on parenting issues. The event took place on 14 May 2015 at the YMCA premises at the centre of Thessaloniki. Dr Frosso Kalyva, Honorary Senior Lecturer at our Psychology Department discussed the topic ‘How can children succeed in life and at school’, a topic that is stressful for most parents. Dr Kalyva shared her expertise gave some useful information and guidance to parents attending the event underpinning that parents need to build their children’s self-esteems and put the necessary and healthy limitations as well as inspire them to become the best they can be, taking into consideration the uniqueness of each child. The second speaker, Ms Marina Zisiadou-Theofilou, Gestalt Psychotherapist, and YMCA’s associate, talked on the relationship between children and their parents and the importance of keeping open doors and building on a two-way communication within the family. This second event took place in the frame of the multi-faceted cooperation between the International Faculty and YMCA. Joint events and activities will be taking place throughout the year within the frame of social action in the community.

Career Day 2015
Our students ‘just careered it’! Themed ‘Just Career it’, the Career Day 2015 was successfully organised by the Department of Student and Alumni Affairs on the 14th May 2015, bringing together students and alumni of the International Faculty with more than 40 company representatives – at a local, national and international level - from a variety of industry sectors. The event was took place at the Information and Learning Commons (ILC) at the main campus of the Faculty in Thessaloniki. Despite the economic crisis, participating employers came ready to offer internships and employment opportunities to our students and graduates in the immediate future. Some of the companies that participated in this year’s Career Day were: Pepsico Greece, KPMG, Adecco, YMCA, AB Vassilopoulos, Alumil, ICAP, Manpower, Randstad and many more. Our students and graduates met employers and head hunters face-to-face, had the opportunity to present their CV and market themselves, to discuss matters concerning the job market, to network, to seek career opportunities and get a real-life experience of the interview process. The feedback from companies’ representatives was very positive, all reporting how impressed they were from the students they interviewed, their professional approach and their value in the job market. Mr George Stilas, Organised Retail Supervisor at Pepsico Greece commented on the company’s participation in the Career Day είπε: “We are impressed by our participation in the Career Day of CITY College. We interviewed many students and we believe we are going to have a very positive outcome.” The Annual Career Day has become a tradition at the International Faculty aiming at enhancing students’ employability skills and connection to the job market and also at bringing the industry closer to academia for a fruitful and mutually beneficial relationship and exchange. The Career Day comes in line with our Faculty’s strategic goals and mission for extroversion and connection with the industry. We are proud to say that the Career Day was the jump-start many of our graduates now enjoying a successful career in Greece, Europe and all over the world. Photo gallery

Our students in Sofia volunteer in the GoBio Annual Festival
Our students studying in Sofia participated as volunteers in the GoBio Annual Festival which took place on the 17th of May 2015. 14 students in total contributed to this very important event for GoBio Bulgaria were involved in many pre and post-event activities. During the GoBio Festival they showed high level of professionalism, excellent organizational and teamwork skills as well as very high motivation to contribute and carry out tasks assigned to them. Their performance exceeded the organizers’ expectations and they made a very good impression as young and responsible modern citizens. Ms Elena Filipova from GoBio Bulgaria commented: "We would like to thank CITY College and its students for the trust and for the participation of all volunteers who took part in the GoBio Festival 2015. Together we managed to popularize for another year the idea of a greener, healthier and environmentally friendlier life. Thank you!" 14th Student Spring Symposium 2015
Students had their say and shared their passion! The 14th Students’ Spring Symposium took place with great success and interesting research outcomes at our main campus in Thessaloniki, 15 May 2015. This was the 14th consecutive year for this student event-tradition to be organised and bring together students from many academic institutions to share their passion and have their say. Billed as ‘by students for students’, the event took place with more than 140 students participating from the University of International Faculty, CITY College, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and the University of Macedonia (UOM) and presenting their research work and achievements. The event was a big celebration from an academic aspect featuring 19 inspirational presentations. At the conclusion of the event the best presentation entitled ‘Impossible is nothing in Armenia’ by Ms Arevik Hayrapetyan was awarded a tablet from the event’s sponsor ‘PLAISIO’. Also a draw among the event’s participants gave a tablet to Ms Miruna Carmen. However, the real story of this conference is the significant power of our student-volunteers who carried it out from the beginning until its completion under the guidance and support of Dr Kontantinos Dimopoulos, Dr Alexandros Kapoulas and Dr Antonia Ypsilanti. The International Faculty at the 1st Thessaloniki Science Festival
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College celebrated science by participating in the 1st Thessaloniki Science Festival, with a series of workshops and presentations, 14-17 May 2015. Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of our Faculty delivered an interesting speech on ‘The Greek Startup scene: a bubble or a window to the future’ and discussed the growing number of Greek startups and their potential to become profitable and successful. Workshop by Dr Ladas and Dr Chrysochoou at the Thessaloniki Science Festival Representing the Psychology Department, Dr Frosso Kalyva, Honorary Senior Lecturer and Dr Aristea Ladas, Lecturer and Research Associate together with Dr Elisavet Chrysohoou, Lecturer, run a series of interactive workshops entitled ‘We Say "No" to Violence' and ‘Brain science for kids: Come play…with our brains!’ respectively. The workshops engaged many children that enjoyed their participation while parents commented that they were very useful and educative. Dr Kostas Dimopoulos, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department, along with a team of student-volunteers presented two robotics-related demonstrations: ‘Virtual worlds in education: Three 3-dimension games on education' and ‘Ants and Robots: Learning from nature how to build robots that cooperate’. Both demonstrations attracted many visitors of the event who joined Dr Dimopoulos with his teams and watched and played with the robots. A very informative presentation was also delivered by Mr. Chris Liassides, Director of Postgraduate Studies at our Business Administration and Economics Department. Mr Liassides talked about ‘Online, Offline Product Placement’ presenting the new trends of online and offline marketing. The Thessaloniki Science Festival presented one more opportunity for CITY College to distribute knowledge and connect to the wider community.

Entry Scholarships to The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College for students from Kosovo, 2015-16
For: Undergraduate (Bachelors) Postgraduate (Masters-full time) Executive MBA (part time) Research Degrees (full time PhD) The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Kosovo are offering fifty five (55) scholarships to students from Kosovo for Bachelors, Masters (full time), MBA (part time) and Research Degrees (full PhD) studies (Admission year: 2015-2016). Under this initiative, CITY College aims at supporting tuition of exceptional students who wish to study at the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College in Thessaloniki, Greece and pursue a globally recognised degree from the University of Sheffield. The studies will be offered at the campus of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Young Leaders Workshop by Dr Dimitriadis in Skopje
Another successful Young Leaders Workshop was delivered by Dr. Dimitriadis – in Skopje this time – with more than 60 high school students participating to gain leadership knowledge and skills and also have the opportunity to obtain a scholarship for our programmes. The 3-hour workshop took place on the 8th of May at the TCC Grand Plaza Hotel. The Young Leaders Workshop was led by Dr. Nikolaos Dimitriadis, lecturer at the Business, Administration and Economics Department and Director of the Educational Development Institute (EDI). In the interactive workshop Dr Dimitriadis awakened participants’ creativity, motivated them to express their leadership skills and to learn how to grow into professionals managing an effective team. At the end participating students were asked to write an essay on a leadership-related subject. The best essays will win partial scholarships for one of our bachelors programmes offered at our main campus in Thessaloniki. All students received the Workshop Certificate. “The older view of leadership is that some people were born leaders and some people were not, so either you are born a leader and you had all this charisma or you cannot make it in life. Now we know that this is not the case - everybody can be a charismatic leader and everybody can influence and transfer this passion to other people for what to do. So, it seems that everybody can do it, we have to find a way to release this energy and this potential and in order to do so, especially with young people, and we need to give them space. Young people, and especially this new generation, they have all the information they need, they are born and raised online, so they are very familiar with the searching the things they need and find them very fast. So, the role of us trying to develop new leaders, is not to teach them how to become leaders, it’s not to give them the knowledge or the energy - they have the energy and they can find the knowledge, but what we need to do is to prove them the space to naturally bring out the leadership skills, so we’re talking more about mentorship or even coaching, rather than teaching them to become leaders and push them. So, we need to speak their language, we need to show them what is possible and we have to give them the space and the confidence they need in order to become leaders.” - stated Dr. Dimitriadis. This was the first time for the ‘Young Leaders Workshop’ to be delivered in Skopje offering a unique learning opportunity to students who also have the opportunity to get to know more about one of the top British universities, the University of Sheffield, and gain scholarships for the Bachelor’s programme of their choice.

The International Faculty signs Scholarships Agreement with the Ministry of Education of Kosovo
On the 5th of May 2015 in Prishtina, Mr. Ioannis Ververidis, Principal of CITY College the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield in Thessaloniki and Dr. Arsim Bajrami, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo signed a protocol of cooperation which includes a scholarships agreement for students from Kosovo. The scholarships agreement includes fifty five (55) scholarships for students from Kosovo for Bachelor’s, Master’s, MBA studies and Doctorate (PhD) research degrees for the admission year 2015-16. More details for the entry scholarships offered to students from Kosovo. Under this common initiative the two parties involved have agreed to provide an educational opportunity to students from Kosovo who wish to study abroad and pursue a globally recognized degree, the degree of the University of Sheffield. During their meeting, Mr. Ververidis and Dr. Arsim Bajrami discussed thoroughly the opportunities arising from this cooperation for the promotion of quality education and academic research through common initiatives.

Online Open Day for the 'MSc in International Health Management and Leadership'
Candidates wishing to pursue postgraduate studies in Health Management through the University of Sheffield's MSc in International Health Management and Leadership may attend the Open Day of the University of Sheffield, this coming Friday, 15 May 2015 to find out more information about the programme. Sign up now for the online open day at www.sheffield.ac.uk/scharr/prospective_students/opendays The session will take the form of a webinar and last 60 minutes, beginning with a short presentation from the course director. This will include information about the University, the course content, assessment and support. There will then be a demonstration of the University's virtual learning environment that you will use as a student on our courses. Information about the course entry requirements and application process will also be provided. Questions can be asked throughout the webinar and there will also be plenty of time at the end for a question and answer session. The sessions are delivered using an online webinar tool called 'Adobe Connect', that allows users to join a virtual classroom. Participants will be able to see and hear the presentations and take part in the session by asking questions using the chat tool or using a microphone or USB headset if they have one. Instructions on how to use Adobe Connect and how to join the live open day session will be sent to participants once they have booked a place. They will also be able to join the live session using Apple, Android or Blackberry devices by downloading the free Adobe Connect App. The programme is run by ScHARR in collaboration with the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College.

The International Faculty at the EBAN 2015 Open Forum in Eindhoven on 6-8 May 2015
On the occasion of the EBAN 2015 Angel Summit that took place at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Europe’s leading innovation hub and R&D centre, on 6-8 May 2015, Professor Panayiotis Ketikidis and Andreas Baresel-Bofinger presented on behalf of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, and the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC), the outcomes of a survey on the subject of ‘Boosting Entrepreneurship in South-East Europe’. The survey had been conducted under the project ‘VIBE-Venture Initiative in the South-East Europe’, co-funded by the EU in the framework of the ‘SEE Transnational Cooperation Programme’, in which SEERC was the Greek partner. This year’s Forum was held under the motto ‘Creating, financing and building global success stories made in the EMEA region - Europe – Middle East – Africa’. The event gathered more than 300 representatives of the early stage financing industry and entrepreneurs from all over the world. The many contributions highlighted from various perspectives the importance of creating a sustainable support and funding scheme in the global start-up value chain. Also future funding opportunities in EU projects were discussed.
