Latest news from Dr Gkasis

Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) and Associate Fellow of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI), latest activity at the University of Sheffield includes two lectures he delivered through the ‘Sheffield for the Exchange Lecturers Programme as well as his contribution to one of the university’s blogs. More specifically, Dr Gkasis delivered two lectures on the Greek crisis at the Management School of the University of Sheffield. The first lecture was delivered to students of the MBA programme and the second to students of the MSc in Management programme. Dr Gkasis visited The University of Sheffield under the Exchange of Lecturers programme which is organised annually by the University and the International Faculty.  Furthermore, Dr Gkasis has contributed a blog entry to the SPERI Comment blog on May 6, 2015. Dr Gkasis is addressing the strategies followed by the newly-elected Greek government. Dr Gkasis works on a joined project with the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) on Greece.

BPS accreditation for CITY College

a great achievement for our Psychology Department We are pleased to announce that the Psychology Department at CITY College has become the first in Greece and in the region to be granted the prestigious accreditation of the British Psychological Society (BPS) for the undergraduate (BSc in Psychology) programmes it offers. The award was made following a panel visit of BPS representatives to our main campus in Thessaloniki the previous month. The British Psychological Society (BPS) is the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK and promotes excellence and ethical professional practice and education. Accreditation is the means by which the Society reaches a view on whether psychology courses are suitable to support students’ achievement of learning outcomes, and are supported by an appropriate resource base. The Society approved for the first time last year an International accreditation scheme for programmes offered abroad. Our Bachelor programme and the provision offered to students met the rigorous criteria set by BPS. The BPS accreditation is a definite hallmark of quality for psychology. It is of immense importance of the recognition of our graduates’ professional rights and indicates that the programmes support quality learning, are well-resourced, and cover in depth the curriculum endorsed by the Society. The BPS accreditation team commended the Psychology Department for their student-centered approach, their engagement with the community, their interactive teaching in class, the feedback provided to students, the robust tutoring system, their proactive approach to employability, and for acting as a regional hub for dissemination of best Teaching & Learning practice. Dr Ana Vivas, Head of the Psychology Department commented on this success: "I am delighted the BPS has recognised our continuous efforts and work in educating ethical and very well prepared psychologists! The BPS is a reference point for Psychology in the UK, and has very high standards, and so this accreditation is a huge achievement for our department, and CITY College. As usual this is the result of a remarkable team effort, and the dedication and commitment of many people at CITY College. Well done to all!"

Mr Dikaios and Dr Patsala on National TV Channel of Kosovo

During their visit to Kosovo, Mr. Gregory Dikaios and Dr Paschalia Patsala were invited to give a TV interview to the National Channel RTK3 of Kosovo. Mr. Gregory Dikaios, the Director of Recruitment, had the opportunity to present the International Faculty and the study opportunities it offers to students from the region, including students from Kosovo. Moreover, on the occasion of the Invited Speech she delivered to students and staff at the School of English of the University of Prishtina, Dr Patsala, the Head of the English Studies Department, presented the academic Programmes offered at a Graduate and Postgraduate level by the English Studies Department, their unique characteristics, as well as graduates’ employability opportunities.

Invited Speech by Dr Patsala at the University of Prishtina

Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of English Studies Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, delivered an Invited Speech to students and Academic Staff at the English Studies Faculty, University of Prishtina. The presentation was entitled "Foreign Language Classroom Dilemmas: Teach(er) or Manage(r)?" and was warmly attended by more than 70 final-year students.    During her talk, Dr Patsala shared her experience in relation to daily dilemmas that foreign language teachers meet in their classes of various levels and age groups, and she discussed with participants in an interactive manner how an English language teacher can increase student active engagement and assist learners in improving their academic performance, ensuring them at the same time a constructive and creative learning experience.  This Presentation also marks the beginning of the collaboration between the English Studies Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and the English Studies Department of the University of Prishtina, and opens up opportunities for collaboration between the Academic Staff of the two Faculties in the future.

Dr Nikolaidis and Prof. Ketikidis at the ‘Education, Innovation, Entrepreneurship’ Conference

The Conference the ‘Education, Innovation, Entrepreneurship’ took place successfully with Dr Dimitris Nikolaidis, Head of BAED participating as speaker and Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty as coordinator of two panels. The event was organised by Alexander Innovation Zone S.A. and the Greek-American Chamber of Commerce and took place on 27 April 2015 at NOESIS Technological Museum. The conference brought together experts from the fields of innovation, education and business and offered an excellent opportunity for a productive public forum on the connection between education, innovation and entrepreneurship. Dr Nikolaidis participated in the panel ‘Connecting Education and Entrepreneurship’ and discussed the importance of building and maintaining strong links between educational institutions and the industry for mutual benefits. Dr Nikolaidis and Prof. Ketikidis communicated the International Faculty’s stance towards the relation of the two, to inform teaching and support experiential education with input from the business world as well as provide education outputs for the benefit of the industry.   The event’s panels hosted representatives of local administration, business, educational institutions and concluded with interesting remarks from participants.

The International Faculty goes to Sheffield: a fantastic trip for our students!

For the first time students from our Faculty travelled to the UK to visit the University of Sheffield and they had a blast! The trip took place 22-25 April 2015 and was organised by our Students’ Union (CSU). Our students, escorted by Ms. Maria Matiaki, Director of the Department of Student Affairs, spent four days in Sheffield full of activities, events, and – of course – fun! Upon their arrival students were welcomed warmly by Prof. Paul White, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield. They didn’t even miss the opportunity to get a ‘selfie’ with him. In the frame of visit, a tour of the university’s campus took place as well as a tour of the Student’s Union building. Students also strolled around Sheffield in the ‘city walking tour’ escorted by Dr Tim Cooper, International Student Support Officer. They also attended a USE Workshop by Gary Wood, Enterprise Learning Development Officer. One day before their departure our students had the opportunity to do some sightseeing and visit Chatsworth House, the magnificent home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. CSU President, Vachos Xantinidis said: “The Trip to Sheffield was successful and went very well. Participants spent an amazing time doing different kind of activities and workshops. I hope that this trip was the beginning of a new 'tradition' that the CSU (2014-15) initiated for the International Faculty, for the years to come.” Mpampis Trasanidis, Sports and Event Officer, who went on the trip, added: “It was great chance to meet and live for three days with students of other faculties, departments and programmes of our university. Students from the International Faculty should try and organize a trip to Sheffield once per year. It’s an experience not to be missed!” Students returned to Thessaloniki excited from the trip to Sheffield, with memories to share and photos to show to their fellow-students and lecturers.

Seminar for English Language Teachers by Dr Patsala in Skopje

The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in cooperation with the English Teachers Association, ELTAM, delivered an open seminar addressed to foreign language teachers on the topic: “How to Achieve Excellence in the Foreign Language Classroom”. Dr. Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Language Department for the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College presented a number of techniques and strategies aimed at foreign language teachers from the country. Dr. Patsala discussed various topics that are of great interest to language teachers nowadays, among others: Class Management, Teaching and Learning Methods in relation to Foreign Languages, Improving Learner Autonomy, and Contemporary Technologies in ELT. This open seminar gave the opportunity to Dr Patsala to share her expertise with the foreign language teachers from the country, wishing to contribute to teachers’ effort to increase student active engagement and academic performance. During the seminar, Dr. Patsala discussed the usage of possible classroom scenarios, strategies and initiatives through which foreign language teachers will be able to recognize potential points of concern and lead the way to a more effective learning experience. In addition, all participants were provided with online and printed materials and tools related to practical teaching ideas, and they were awarded Certificates of Attendance. Dr. Paschalia Patsala has approximately 15 years of experience in Higher Education, having taught in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes offered by various European and American Universities (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, GR; Empire State College - State University of New York, USA; University of Greenwich, UK; University of Wales–Institute Cardiff, UK; Institut Universitaire Kurt Bosch, Switzerland, etc.). This professional seminar marked the beginning of the collaboration between the English Studies Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and ELTAM, which judging by the immense interest for participation, undoubtedly opens up vast opportunities for professional development in the future.

7th International Strategic People Management Workshop

The Laboratory for Strategic People Management of our Business Department successfully organised the 7th International Strategic People Management Workshop entitled ‘MY JOURNEY to the …TOP. Lessons Learned and Futures to be Written’ on 22 April 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The event took place in the frame of the Annual MBA Study Week and was endorsed by our Executive Development Institute (EDI). Dr Leslie Szamosi, Co-Director of the Laboratory and Academic Director of the Executive MBA, welcomed the audience to this annual workshop in HRM. The workshop featured three keynote speakers, Mr. Stefanos Oktapodas, Chairman, CEO – Green Cola, Mr. Tasos Kyriakidis, General Manager of Viozokat and Ms. Aimilia Tseima, President and CEO of ATTP who shared their expertise with the audience, as well as their valuable experiences gained throughout their career so far. For the closing discussion, the audience raised a number of issues and questions generating lively debate among the participants. The HR Workshop is organised on an annual basis aiming at promoting the progress of professional human resource management within the region. The event was well-attended by our Executive MBA students, HR professionals and business executives.

The Annual Study Week in Thessaloniki 2015

Educational, Busy and Fun! The Annual Study Week in Thessaloniki took place between 17-25 April 2015 with great success with all our 2nd year Executive MBA students from Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest and Kyiv participating. Like every year the study week was a mix of classes, seminars, company visit activities, networking, free time and exciting outings. The study week kicked off with students attending track units corresponding to the MBA specialization they have chosen, as well as an insightful lecture on social entrepreneurship delivered by Mr. Christian Vanizette, ASHOKA fellow and Co-Founder of Makesense.org based in Paris, as part of the ‘Meet the CEO’ feature of the MBA programme.   Workshop on Social Entrepreneurship On Monday 20 April, MBA participants also attended a Workshop on Social Entrepreneurship delivered by Mr. Vanizette, and had the opportunity take part in a very interesting simulated case of social entrepreneurship in which they were asked to find solutions for real social problems.   Neuromarketing demonstration On the same day, MBA students of the marketing track had the chance to participate in a very interesting neuromarketing demonstration performed in class by neuromarketing experts of the Research Agency, Net Value. The demonstration took place in the frame of ‘Brand Strategy’ unit, led by Dr Ana Cruz.   Coaching Seminar During the Study Week MBA students also attended a very interesting Executive Coaching Seminar delivered by Mr. Nikos Lambridis, Senior Leadership Coach with significant experience in career coaching and professional development, and also a BAED Adjunct Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership module of the MBA programme. The seminar took place on Tuesday, 21 April and gave our MBA students guidelines on how to coach their workforce effectively by focusing on their self-development first. More about the Coaching Programme of our MBA.   Boat cruise in Thermaikos Gulf The boat trip in Thermaikos Gulf was a pleasant break for our MBA students. Our students enjoyed a calm boat trip with the beautiful city view of Thessaloniki from the sea. They had the opportunity to admire the city from a different angle along with a pint of beer or a glass of wine and good company.   7th International Strategic People Management Workshop This year the 7th International Strategic People Management Workshop took place in the frame of the MBA Annual Study Week in Thessaloniki and the ‘Meet the CEO’ feature of out Executive MBA. On 22 April 2015 the Laboratory for Strategic People Management of our Business Department successfully organised the Workshop entitled ‘MY JOURNEY to the …TOP. Lessons Learned and Futures to be Written’. The event was endorsed by our Executive Development Institute (EDI) and well attended by our MBA students. More about the event.   Company visits During the Annual Study Week 2015 in Thessaloniki our MBA students following the healthcare track of the Executive MBA programme visited ‘AROGI’ rehabilitation centre as part of the unit ‘Healthcare Systems Policy and Economics’, escorted by lecturers Dr Janet Harris and Dr Andrew Lee and the Director of the MBA programme, Mr George Efstathiadis. More about the company visit at ‘Arogi’. Moreover, students following the logistics specialisation of the MBA visited the port of Thessaloniki in the frame of unit ‘Global Supply Chain Management’. Escorted by Dr Aris Matopoulos the unit leader, students attended a very interesting presentation by Dr Dimitrios Makris, Sea Transport & Port Operations Specialist and Head of Strategic Planning from Marketing & Sales Department of Thessaloniki Port Authority who talked to the students about port’s organisation, services and trends.   Once again the MBA Study Week in Thessaloniki was a true networking opportunity for our students from Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest and Kyiv who spent a full week together, exchanged ideas and practices, participated in interesting activities, saw in practice the programme’s holistic approach and had lots of fun and enjoyed the city.  View study week photo gallery View boat cruise photo gallery

Thought-provoking TED talk by Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis in Strathclyde

Our very own Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Director of Development of EDI and Lecturer at our Executive MBA programme gave his first TED talk at the TEDx in Strathclyde, Scotland, with great success. The event took place on Sunday, 26 April 2015. In his lively presentation entitled "The Illusion of Communication and the Brain-Based Solution"Dr Dimitriadis argued that today we have the illusion that we are communicating - when in fact we are not - since we base our communication on an outdated model of human nature. In his TED talk Dr Dimitriadis suggested that the human brain makes decisions based on a complex infrastructure and not a specific part of the brain. Dr Dimitriadis commented “The time has come to change and start communicating to the real brain as a whole, if we really want meaningful outcomes. Governments, companies, brands, parents and individuals alike are in great need of this change if we are to experience a more positive future than our past and present.” The organizers were very satisfied with Dr Dimitriadis’ talk and commented that it was one of the best TED talks of the day!
