CITY College Running Team at the 10th ‘Alexander the Great’ International Marathon

CITY College Running Team had the unique experience to participate in the 10th ‘Alexander the Great’ International Marathon, the biggest sporting event in Northern Greece with approximately 15.000 road runners aged 9-85 years participating. Comprised of 33 runners (2 runners in the 42km race, 8 runners in 10km and 23 in 5km) from our Faculty’s student body, faculty and administration staff members, our Running Team joined the race and enjoyed the experience to the fullest. Very special congratulations go to our marathon runners, our alumnus, Charilaos Liampas and Christos Papadopoulos from the Faculty’s staff, who raced the 42km from Pella in 3:56:45 and 4:20:04 respectively! It was the second time for Charilaos to participate in the Marathon and achieve a remarkable time record. Our alumnus Charilaos Liampas who completed the 42km Marathon The International Faculty warmly congratulates all marathon participants and its Students’ Union (CSU) for organizing our participation!

SEERC among the organisers of ICT2B Innovation Runway

The World’s First Science/Business Jam The ICT2B Innovation Runway event took place in Frankfurt at the Lufthansa Training & Conference from the 20th until the 22nd February 2015. The event was organised by an international consortium led by Fraunhofer, Germany, including SEERC and the University of Sheffield.

BAED students visit Thessaloniki’s Concert Hall

A very interesting company visit took place for our business students who visited Thessaloniki’s Concert Hall, escorted by Dr Ana Cruz, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department. Mr. Prodromos Monastiridis, Marketing Manager of Thessaloniki’s Conert Hall, shared his valuable expertise with our students. The visit proved to be great insight into organising cultural and commercial events and a unique learning experience in a breath taking venue.

Dr Lazuras Presents his Research on Bullying at Pinewood International School

Conducting Research with Societal Impact Accepting the invitation of School Advisors and the Observatory for School Violence and Bullying of Central Macedonia, Dr Lambros Lazuras, Lecturer in the Psychology Department, presented his research on bullying and cyberbullying in elementary and high school students of Pinewood, The American International School of Thessaloniki on Thursday 2.4.2015. Dr Lazuras talked about the similarities and differences between face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying, addressed the psychological consequences of cyberbullying victimization, and provided parents, teachers, and students with evidence-based recommendations and guidelines for the effective prevention of cyberbullying incidents. Dr Lazuras is a social psychologist interested in the drivers of risk and deviant behaviours, including cyberbullying among young people and adults. He has co-authored a book about cyberbullying in Greek, and published several articles about adolescent cyberbullying in international scientific journals.

Students from Sofia join fellow-students in Thessaloniki to work on CSR project

A group of undergraduate business students studying at the International Faculty, CITY College in Sofia, Bulgaria visited our main campus in Thessaloniki to attend joint classes with Thessaloniki students and work together on a challenging CSR project. The visit took place 26-28 March 2015. In the frame of the visit and within the assessment requirements of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) unit, 2nd level students were required to come up with a business idea that would have a clear social and/or environmental impact and to present it before a panel. Students worked on this project within groups of four. Furthermore each group was required to be a mixed group consisting of students studying in Sofia and Thessaloniki. The results were truly inspiring. Dr Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration & Economics Department commented: “I had the opportunity to be a part of and attend some of your classes and working sessions during last week’s Corporate Social Responsibility unit and I would like to commend you all for your high level of responsibility and engagement shown.  I also attended your presentations and I was impressed by your ideas; the passion I saw in your eyes and your willingness to change the region.  For two full days you worked hard and cooperated smoothly with other students from other countries you met for the first time; you argued, agreed and disagreed, but at the end you synthesized, you produced a plan, and you expressed your thoughts in a nicely made visual presentation, as you will all do in the real corporate world in few years from today. Well done to all of you!” The visit of students from Bulgaria was a great opportunity to meet their fellow-students, exchange ideas and experiences, make new friendships and get a true feel of our Faculty’s international character.

Our English Studies Department in the 22nd TESOL Macedonia-Thrace Annual International Convention

The English Studies Department of The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College participated with two presentations in the 22nd TESOL Macedonia-Thrace Annual International Convention that took place in Thessaloniki on Saturday and Sunday, 28-29 March, at ACT. During the first presentation entitled “Re-negotiating the Basics: Learner Autonomy,” Ms. Kosior and Mr. Mantzaris traced the transition from teacher-centered to student-centered approaches and methodologies, and examined their implications in language learning and teaching. In this direction, they addressed a range of practical suggestions on how to construct and develop learner autonomy in EFL environments, through the use of self-reflective processes (such as reflective reports and self-assessment portfolios), as well as technological tools (for example, TED talks and the TED-Ed platform, Clickers, and Youtube). Moreover, the two speakers highlighted the centrality and significance of the role(s) of the teacher in creating space for "magic moments" which foreground student motivation, creative engagement, and meaningful interaction. Photo Credit: @DimitrisTzouris In the second presentation delivered under the title “Paving the Way to Employability: A Student Trip of Achievements from Homework to Actual Work,” Dr George Dimitriadis explained how the International Faculty academic staff equip their undergraduate and postgraduate students with the necessary academic skills that will not only help them excel in their studies, but will also enable them to retain and employ these skills for their future careers as professionals. Dr Dimitriadis emphasized on the multifaceted mechanism that the International Faculty has developed in order to assist students in building their employability profile (for example, via tutorials, academic and transferrable skills Courses, workshops for UG and PGT students, the Sheffield Graduate Attributes, demo job interviews and CV developing seminars, and many more). The speaker described how students at CITY College gain control over their own learning and preserve it as part of their professional image in their current or future work environments. Both presentations were very well-received by the international audience and valuable feedback was provided by the attendees to the speakers.

New Masters programmes in Neuropsychology

The Psychology Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, is happy to announce the launch of two new postgraduate programmes in its portfolio, responding to the strong demand for studies in Neuropsychology: the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology and the MSc in Cognitive Neuropsychology The MA in Clinical Neuropsychology focuses on the understanding behavioural and cognitive deficits that follow damage to the brain in clinical populations such as neurological patients (e.g., stroke and epilepsy), people with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, and children with neurodevelopmental conditions. This course equips students with all the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in Clinical Neuropsychology. Clinical neuropsychologists use tools of neuropsychological assessment to map the cognitive profile of patients and children with brain injury and develop rehabilitation programmes and interventions to improve the cognitive function and quality of life of these patients. The Msc in Cognitive Neuropsychology is a research-oriented degree that provides strong research skills in Neuropsychology allowing students to further pursue a PhD in Neuropsychology and Neuroscience. The programme focuses on understanding brain-behaviour relations in neurological patients (e.g., stroke and epilepsy), people with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, and children with neurodevelopmental conditions. The programme also includes practical knowledge in neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. The programme is completed with the submission of a dissertation on Neurospychology/Neuroscience, which equips students with advanced research skills in designing and implementing independent research in this  fast-developing field. Students of both Master programmes will be trained to use state-of-art equipment to train brain activity and measure psychophysiological responses in our brand new Neurofeedback Laboratory - recently added to our premises -, as well as practical training on Neuropsychological Assessment. Both programmes are open to candidates with a degree in psychology as well as graduates and professionals from health-related disciplines. The programmes will be taught in English and will be offered both in full-time and part-time mode, starting the academic year 2015-16. Classes will be taking place on weekdays during afternoon hours. Executive MBA alumna receives 'Best Businesswoman in Belgrade' Award

Congratulations to our MBA alumna, Ms Sanja Milakovic Kolundzija, Principal of the PR agency 'Executive Group', who was honored with the distinguished award 'Kapetan Misa Anastasijevic', recognising her as the 'Best Businesswoman' in Belgrade. This renowned award is offered to leading contributors of business and society for 14 years now, and is presented by the University of Belgrade and the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. The event was organised by the Media Invent agency. Misa Anastasijevic, a great 19th century Serbian businessman and benefactor - often called the Serbian Rothschild - was the owner of Serbia’s first multinational company and one of the wealthiest people in Europe at the time.

Minister of Education from Kosovo visits the International Faculty in Thessaloniki

Prof. Dr. Arsim Bajrami, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo, visited our main campus in Thessaloniki, Greece during the previous week.  During his visit  Prof. Bajrami had the opportunity to meet with the Principal of the International Faculty, Mr Yannis Ververidis as well as other officials of our Faculty and discuss opportunities for further collaboration.

Young Leaders Workshop in Bucharest

The 1st Young Leaders Workshop in Bucharest was held with great success on Saturday 21st of March at the Hilton Bucharest Hotel. Forty high-school students from 12th and 11th grade had the chance to participate in the workshop and learn more about leadership, business and managerial skills. The workshop was led by Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department and Director of Development of EDI who talked to students about leadership, modern business skills and entrepreneurship. At the end of the workshop, students wrote essays on a leadership topic. The best essays will win partial scholarships for studies at the International Faculty's main campus in Thessaloniki!
