The International Faculty at the 7th International Week Dedicated to Maths 2015
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College supported the 7th International Week Dedicated to Maths 2015, which took place in Thessaloniki 18-22 March 2015. In the frame of the event, Mr. Thanos Hatziapostolou, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department held a presentation entitled 'Technology and Education'. In his presentation, Mr. Hatziapostolou presented a series of web tools that teachers can use to adapt new technology in the classroom in order to facilitate their work, increase student motivation and participation - since traditional teaching often cultivates a passive role -, receive better feedback, train students to use technology and improve the overall educational process. Mr. Hatziapostolou also explained how Math teachers in specific could benefit from new technologies in their class. The seminar was addressed to teachers of different levels of education. On the last day of the event, Mr. Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department held a robotics demonstration entitled “Design and Build a Robotic Ant Colony” with a group of students. Simple robots would search their environments looking for two things: food and their nest. Once a new nest was discovered by an ant, the ant would communicate the information to the other ants. In a similar manner, when an ant located food that it could not pick up, it would also communicate this to the other ants. The aim was for the ants to forage their food. The demonstration attracted a lot of visitors who had a lot of fun watching the ant-robots! The International Faculty acted at sponsor at the 7th International Week Dedicated to Maths 2015.

Dr Ypsilanti talks about 'The Socio-emotional Development of Preschoolers' at the Psychology for all series
The ‘Psychology for all series’ hosted Dr Antonia Ypsilanti, Lecturer at our Psychology Department, who delivered an interesting talk on 'Socio-emotional Development of Preschoolers' on Wednesday 18 March 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. With many parents of small children attending, Dr Ypsilanti discussed the different factors that influence preschoolers’ social and emotional development such as their temperament, the type of parenting experienced by the children as well as the attachment. “Research reveals that the child’s secure attachment and bonding to its mother has a positive impact on the child’s social and emotional development’ note Dr Ypsilanti. During her presentation Dr Ypsilanti identified the positive and negative practices of parenting with respect to their children’s’ social and emotional adaptation. The event was well-attended and created an opportunity for the audience to discuss with the speaker issues they are facing with their preschoolers. Dr Prodromidou and Dr Gkasis at an international conference in Sheffield next week
Dr Prodromidou and Dr Gkasis A paper by Dr Alexandra Prodromidou and Dr Pavlos Gkasis, both Lecturers at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED), will be presented next week at the 65th Political Studies Association (PSA) International Conference on the ‘Debt Crisis- Infused Political Resistance in Greece’. The presentation will be part of a Greek Politics Specialist Group organized panel on ‘Crisis, Austerity and its Discontents: Socio-Economic and Political Factors’. Our English Studies Department participates in the 22nd TESOL Macedonia Thrace Northern Greece Annual International Convention
The English Studies Department of the International Faculty, CITY College is going to participate in the 22nd TESOL Macedonia Thrace Northern Greece Annual International Convention, on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of March at the American College of Thessaloniki. In the frame of the event Dr George Dimitriadis and Dr Parschalia Patsala will hold a presentation entitled: "Paving the way to employability: A student trip of achievements from homework to actual work" which will take place on Sunday 29th of March at 16:00. The presentation is an opportunity to provide an insight into the University of Sheffield, International Faculty English Studies curricula and how students are prepared for a successful and exciting career as University of Sheffield graduates. Furthermore, a number of plenary speakers specialising in ELT training namely Marjorie Rosenberg, Andrew Wright, Alec Williams and Ken Wilson will present topics related to the subject of the convention which is "Back to Basics" and basically will introduce "old-fashioned" values, techniques, methods in ELT and their use in line with the new technologies. Human Resource Management: a new specialisation in our Executive MBA programme
Responding to today’s demand for well-educated HR professionals and managers able to effectively manage the human capital in order to achieve maximum performance, our Executive MBA recently launched a new specialisation: the MBA in Human Resource Management (HRM). While maintaining all the advantages and features of our MBA programme, the HRM specialisation also provides students the opportunity to gain deeper understanding of this increasingly important field of management, through a curriculum enriched with contemporary HR-related theory and practice. The MBA with specialisation in Human Resource Management is an internationally recognised qualification and has been designed to develop an up-to-date understanding of current thinking in the business field and in the HRM discipline specifically. As such, it provides a unique forum for analysing and communicating the latest thinking in both professional practice and in the academic arena. The new specialisation has been designed for those currently working in junior or senior HR positions as well as those interested in pursuing a HR career. The new HRM specialisation is the sixth specialisation available in our Executive MBA programme – in addition to Marketing, General Management, Logistics, Finance and Healthcare Management – and will start running in the academic year 2015-16 in all cities where the programme is currently offered (i.e. Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest, Kyiv and Sofia). Faculty Victory over Students in Friendly Basketball Game
A different basketball game took place on Sunday 22 March 2015 at Ivanofio indoor hall in Thessaloniki between our faculty and students, a game that concluded with the faculty’s victory. The friendly rivalry started with a variety of challenges between the faculty and the students. Both teams played particularly well. However the students’ team was not that lucky with their shots leaving the faculty men lead the game. In the end, the faculty men prevailed with a win of 38-32. The faculty team comprised Prof. Panayotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of CITY College, Dr Dimitris Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration & Economics Department (BAED), Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of the Executive MBA programme, Dr George Eleftherakis, Senior Lecturer at the Computer Science Department, Mr. Alexandros Charalampidis, Lecturer at the BAED, Mr. Nikos Ergen from the Executive MBA, and ex-basketball player and Lecturer at CITY College, Mr. George Pavlidis. “It wasn’t about winning, it was all about having fun; that was the goal of the game and we made it: we did have a lot of fun! Faculty members and students, we all became a big team and learnt from each other, with team spirit being the greatest lesson of all” said Prof. Ketikidis at the end of the game. Students, faculty and administration members from the International Faculty CITY College cheered for both teams during the game. Mr. Pavlidis, who was also the coach of the faculty’s team commented: “It was a really nice game, where staff, lecturers and students competed in equal terms. Both teams tried really hard and gave their best. It was noticeable that there is much room for improvement; something that I am certain can be accomplished by systematic training. Nonetheless, the fans created an excellent atmosphere for us. Well done to all!” From his side Dr Nikolaidis made a clever parallelism of business and sports: “In Sports, as in Business you should never underestimate an opponent; even if they are weak, and they don’t look that fit, adding: In sports as in Business you succeed if you work collectively, as a team. You might have excellent players with a talent, but it is necessary to make them a team and work as a team.” Read all business lessons learnt from the game as outlined by Dr Nikolaidis. At the end there were no losers or winners as everyone enjoyed the game. Now the students are looking forward for the re-match! The faculty/students friendly basketball game was organised by the CITY’s Student Union (CSU). Business Lessons Learnt from the Faculty/Student Friendly Basketball Game You win a game in the field and only after putting 100% of your effort. No game is won, even the easiest one, unless you fight for it until the end. Setting goals is not enough. YOU NEED TO stay focused and FIGHT FOR THEM hard! A SWOT analysis is always useful. Recognizing your Strengths and using them to win the game is rather crucial. Students' strength was the speed, the endurance and the good technique. However it was NOT to play inside or close to end line. Identifying the opponent’s Weaknesses and taking advantage of them by striking there is rather imperative and can give you a great boost. Staff were heavy, moving not very fast and lack endurance. Identifying the opponents Strengths and not allowing to unfold is also a critical point. In Sports, as in Business you should Never underestimate an opponent; even if they are weak, and they don’t look that fit. In sports as in Business you succeed if you work collectively, as a team. You might have excellent players with a talent, but it is necessary to make them a team and work as a team.

BAED students visit AB Vassilopoulos
A group of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) from the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, visited the Distribution Centre of AB Vassilopoulos in Thessaloniki, Greece. During the company visit hosted by Mr Dimitrios Dakos, Head of Distribution for Northern Greece at AB Vassilopoulos and alumnus of the International Faculty, our students were provided with hands-on industry experience on Inventory Management. This company visit took place in the frame of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management unit delivered by Mr Adrian Solomon and Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis and proved to be an interesting and educational experience for our students. "Alfa-Vita Vassilopoulos" or simply "AB" is a supermarket chain based in Greece which was established in 1939. Company visits and working with industry are vital to enhance our students’ employability. The intention company visits is to give students, who will soon enter the workforce exposure to business culture, working environments and the world of work.

Lecturer from our English Studies Department participates in International Conference
Margarita Kosior, Lecturer of our English Studies Department, participated in the 22nd International IATEFL Slovenia Conference with a presentation entitled “Adopt, Adapt, Improve”. The conference took place on 5-8 March in Terme Topolšica, Slovenia, and Ms. Kosior co-presented a workshop “When ELT met TED”. In the first part of the session, Dimitris Tzouris, Social Media Officer at TEDxThessaloniki, introduced the audience to TED, a platform for sharing ideas, and TEDEd, an educational platform that allows anyone to create an online lesson based on a YouTube video. During the second part, Ms. Kosior explained how she has revolutionised her way of teaching by discarding traditional handouts and turning to online assignments built around TED talks of her choice. This innovative method involves assigning comprehension questions, recommending additional sources and getting the students involved in an online discussion. After the projection of a short TED talk (“Try Something New for 30 Days” by Matt Cutts) the audience got actively involved in creating an online lesson from scratch. The workshop was well attended and the feedback positive. Representatives of EFL teachers' associations from the Balkan region and central Europe expressed interest in the TED+ELT combination, and the presenters were invited to write an article for ELTA Serbia which will be published in their ELTA Journal.
