Dr Kalyva talks about Behavioural Problems at the Psychology for all series
Dr Frosso Kalyva, Senior Lecturer at our Psychology Department made a very interesting presentation entitled 'Behavioural problems and ways to address them' in the frame of the ‘Psychology for all’ series. The event took place on Wednesday, 4 March 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki and was well-attended. Dr Kalyva discussed the increase of stress during childhood and adolescence that may lead to behavioural problems, together with parenting techniques and personality characteristics. In her presentation Dr Kalyva suggested ways in which behavioural problems can be addressed in the family and also at school where young people spend most of their day. Dr Kalyva also referred to victimisation as one of the main behavioural problems in today’s world. The presentation was highly interactive and engaging. The audience found Dr Kalyva’s presentation particularly enlightening and helpful.

Congratulations Dr Vogiazas!
Congratulations to SEERC’s PhD student Mr Sofoklis Vogiazas for successfully defending his PhD on “Macroeconomic credit risk modelling: an empirical investigation of the Romanian and Bulgarian banking systems with reference to the Greek crisis”. Mr Vogiazas will be awarded the degree of PhD in Economics. Mr Vogiazas completed his PhD under the continuous and effective support and guidance of his supervisors, Dr. Kostantinos Mouratidis, from the Economics Department of the University of Sheffield and Dr Eftychia Nikolaidou, from the International Faculty, CITY College. Mr. Vogiazas comments “Once again, may I express my gratitude to all those people that contributed in the completion of my thesis. I am grateful to my supervisors Dr. Nikolaidou Eftychia and Dr. Mouratidis Kostas for their continuous support along this, occasionally hard but rewarding trip. Last, I need to thank Professor Arestis Philip and Dr. Fassas Thanasis for devoting their precious time in examining my thesis. ” Mr. Vogiazas obtained his BSc degree in Applied Mathematics in 1993 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, his MSc in Management Science (Operations Research) from Lancaster University in 1994 and the MSc in Banking and Finance from the University of Sheffield in 2007. The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College takes pride in Mr. Vogiazas achievement and wishes him all the best in her future endeavours!

‘Young Leaders Workshop’ in Belgrade
The Young Leaders Workshop took place with great success in Belgrade, bringing together senior high school and university students from Serbia who joined the event and took the opportunity learn more about leadership. The workshop took place in the frame of the EDUfair on Friday, 6th of March at the Belgrade Crowne Plaza Hotel. Mr Jeremy Lang, Head of UKTI at the British Embassy in Belgrade, opened the event by talking to students about always giving their best, failing smartly and succeeding in life. Mr Lang used many interesting examples from human history and science. At the 3-our workshop Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department and Director of Development of EDI, talked to students about leadership, modern business skills and entrepreneurship. At the end, participating students were asked to write an essay on a leadership-related subject. The best essays will win partial scholarships for one of our programmes offered at our main campus in Thessaloniki. All students received a Workshop Certificate. This was the second time that the ‘Young Leaders Workshop’ was delivered in Belgrade, offering a unique learning opportunity to Serbian students who also had the opportunity to get to know more about one of the top British universities, the University of Sheffield, and gain scholarships for a Bachelor’s or Master's programme.

The International Faculty at the 6th Foreign Languages Forum in Thessaloniki
The International Faculty participated in the 6th Foreign Languages Forum and Book Exhibition that took place in Thessaloniki on Sunday, 8th of March at the Grand Hotel Palace. In the frame of the forum, lecturers from our English Studies Department, namely Dr George Dimitriadis, Mr Thomas Mantzaris, Dr Vicky Papachristou and Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of Department, delivered an interesting and educative presentation entitled “Problems? What problems?” Tips, Tricks and Traps in Managing Foreign Language Classes of Adult Learners. In a lively and interactive presentation, the speakers identified the problems and challenges that EFL teachers face mainly in the foreign language classroom - though not exclusively - and suggested practices to deal with them. A number of realistic scenarios were presented and discussed with the audience while the presenters suggested a wide range of strategies and initiatives through which foreign language teachers can gain and maintain control of their audience, as well as maximise students' active engagement and performance. Overall, the participation of the International Faculty in the Forum was successful and provided the opportunity to our English Studies Department to showcase their work and academic programmes.

The International Faculty at the Electric Circus Festival
We are pleased to have supported Electric Circus, a two-day Festival on educational robotics, that took place in Thessaloniki 28 February – 1 March 2015 attracting students from all levels to join, watch and participate in the event’s programme and activities. Electric Circus was a ‘circus’ different than ordinary ones, an electric circus with robots, light and sound sensors, microprocessors, gears, wheels, engines, competitions young and older students, smiles, excitements, fun and knowledge! The University of Sheffield Itnernational Faculty,CITY College, was among the festival’s sponsors and participated with Dr Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Lecturer at the Computer Science Department who was among the event’s panelists and competition judges. The event’s programme included a panel discussion about robotics and the ways they can be used in education and promote science, where Dr Dimopoulos participated as discussant. The discussion was followed by Mr Yannis Boutaris’ the Mayor of Thessaloniki address to the audience. An open-themed competition also took place in the frame of the event where six teams of children aged 12 to 16 took part presenting their ideas to the judges, and demonstrated their prototype devices which included robots and wearable electronics. The competition’s judges – Dr. Dimopoulos among them – voted the best ideas. Electric Circus took place for the first time in Thessaloniki and attracted many visitors. The International Faculty is happy to support innovative and educative events – especially if fun is involved!

Talk on ‘Effective methods to Quit Smoking’ by Dr Lazuras
Dr Lambros Lazuras, Lecturer at our Psychology Department and Researcher at SEERC delivered another interesting presentation on quitting smoking, this time in the frame of the ‘Psychology for all’ series. The event took place at our main campus in Thessaloniki, 18 February 2015. In his presentation entitled ‘Quit smoking and start running… Effective ways to quit smoking’ Dr Lazuras discussed what smoking is, why it is harmful and why people continue to smoke. He also presented a series of options for those wishing to quit and ways they could prepare to make the process easier. The lecture also touched upon the question whether smoking is a matter of the mind, a question that generated interesting discussion among the speaker and the audience. Masterclass by Dr Dimitriadis on ‘Brain, Emotions and Sales’
The relationship between the brain, our emotions and the performance of salespeople was thoroughly explained by Dr Nikos Dimitriadis, Director of Development at our Executive Development Institute (EDI) in the insightful presentation he delivered in cooperation with Thessaloniki Innovation Zone S.A at NOISIS Technological Museum, 24 February 2015. Dr Dimitriadis based his engaging presentation on the fact that decisions are emotional and not logical -as proven by neuroscience- explaining the importance of feelings in marketing, communication and negotiations. The speaker talked about the basic parts of the human brain and the ways in which they affect sales. According to Dr Dimitriadis the model of emotional intelligence is directly connected with successful marketing and sales. He also shared a series of techniques with the audience to illustrate how salespeople can use the science of emotions to improve their results. The event was well-attended and concluded with a lively discussion between the audience and Dr Dimitriadis.

A group of international students join the IF through the Erasmus Mundus EU programme
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, welcomed a group of international students who are spending the current academic year attending classes at the International Faculty’s main campus in Thessaloniki, Greece. The students came through the Erasmus Mundus EU programme, in cooperation with the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (ATEI), from various countries across South East and Eastern Europe including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine. The majority of the students joined the bachelors and masters programmes offered by the Faculty’s Business Administration and Economics Department. Armen Nersisyan, undergraduate student from Armenian says: “It’s already been five months since I came to Thessaloniki to study at the University of Sheffield International Faculty through the Erasmus Mundus programme and I really enjoy the whole experience. Thessaloniki is a really beautiful and vivid city full of ancient monuments and things to do. We have great lecturers who do their best for us inside and outside the classroom. The Student Union is very active and organised many interesting student events. I also enjoy the time I spend at the Library that is fully equipped and helps me while studying. I am really happy with my choice to study at the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. I really love it here!” Another student, Armine Petrosyan, also comments: “Studying at the University of Sheffield International Faculty in Thessaloniki gives me the opportunity to get a taste of the Greek ancient culture and to learn one more language. The International Faculty is a place where I can investigate my chosen field thoroughly, continuously and deeply and what is important gain experience. Moreover, I enjoy meeting new people, understanding new ways of thinking and sharing traditions.” Aiming at further enhancing its international outlook, the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, embraces opportunities such as the one presented by the Erasmus Mundus programme, in order to welcome more students from different countries and cultures to join its diverse student community. Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote international cooperation and understanding between the European Union and Third-Countries.
