Our Executive MBA launches the ‘Career Coaching Programme’
Mr Nikos Lambridis, Senior Leadership Coach “People do better when they’re part of something larger than themselves” Taking career coaching in our Executive MBA programme a step further, the International Faculty launched the ‘Career Coaching Programme’. Aiming at addressing our executive students’ career challenges and expectations, the programme is already being offered to all MBA students in all five cities (Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest, Kyiv and Sofia) where the EMBA runs. The Career Coaching programme has been carefully designed and its main goal is to inspire and support students to maximise their professional potential by coaching effectively their workforce. MBA participants enter the programme by taking Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment test, an international test that has helped millions of leaders discover their strengths and become more productive. As business coaching has become fundamental, the programme aspires to train our students help their team members experience progress at work in a meaningful way. Through this coaching programme, our students will be taught how to motivate people, build relationships manage conflict delegate tasks properly and become effective team leaders. The Career Coaching Programme is led by Mr. Nikos Lambridis, Senior Leadership Coach with significant experience in career coaching and professional development, and also a BAED Adjunct Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership module of our MBA programme. Mr. Lambridis has worked in the past with big companies like Coca Cola, Vodafone, Pepsico Cosmote, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and many others. Mr. Lambridis says "Coaching will give MBA participants the mental tools needed to perform at their peak potential, if they want to achieve career success at the next level: Performance confidence, Positive self-talk habits, Visualization, Centering techniques, Self awareness." Our Executive MBA programme is highly focused on career management and advancement and aims at building our students’ skills and helping them succeed in their career-related goals.

Startup founded by two SEERC PhD Students receives €300,000 fund
Goodvidio, a startup specializing in discovery and curation of social video for ecommerce sites, founded by SEERC PhD students, Mr. Konstantinos Bratanis and Mr. Dimitrios Kourtesis, both computer scientists and software engineers received a €300,000 seed investment by JEREMIE Openfund II (www.theopenfund.com). The investment is to aid the company expand its private beta programme and solidify its position as the one-stop solution provider for social video in ecommerce. Goodvidio co-founders - Konstantinos Bratanis (left) and Dimitrios Kourtesis (right) Mr. Bratanis and Mr. Kourtesis met while working together as PhD researchers at our research centre, SEERC, on cloud computing and intelligent information management, and started working on the development of an ecommerce video discovery platform in late 2013. In less than a year from incorporating the company, the startup’s team released a first version of its platform and launched a private beta programme that already includes major retailers and brands from across the world. Plans for 2015 include launching the service in public beta and focusing on sales growth. It should be noted that among other awards, Goodvidio got the 2nd place at the Startup Weekend in Sheffield, in November of 2013. Dr. Eleftherakis talks to primary school students about safe internet
On the 12th Safer Internet Day that was celebrated on 10 February 2015, Dr. George Eleftherakis,Senior Lecturer and Research Coordinator and at our Computer Science Department, delivered a presentation to 6th grade primary school students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) on internet safety and cyber bullying. Entitled ‘Red Riding hood on the Internet. Who’s the bad wolf? How can I protect myself?’ Dr Eleftherakis’ presentation captured the students’ attention who showed particular interest in his speech.

CITY College supports Electric Circus Robotics Festival
The following event is going to take place in Greek. Φεστιβάλ ρομποτικής για παιδιά 28/02 – 01/03 Δημαρχείο Θεσσαλονίκης Γρανάζια, άξονες, ροδάκια, αισθητήρες φωτός, ήχου, απόστασης, ηλεκτρικοί κινητήρες, μικροεπεξεργαστές, ρομπότ, 3D printers, διαδραστική εγκατάσταση, εργαστήρια, ομιλίες, έκθεση και διαγωνισμός ρομπότ, παιδιά μικρά και μεγάλα, χαμόγελα, διασκέδαση, ενθουσιασμός, γνώση… Σαν ένα τσίρκο αλλά διαφορετικό, ένα τσίρκο ηλεκτρικό! Η Robotixlab σε συνεργασία με τον Δήμο Θεσσαλονίκης σχεδιάζουν και διοργανώνουν το Elecric Circus, ένα φεστιβάλ ρομποτικής για παιδιά με διαγωνιστικό μέρος αλλά και ημέρα παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων με ομιλίες, εργαστήρια, έκθεση ρομπότ κ.α. Το Σάββατο 28/02, στην αίθουσα νερού του Δημαρχειακού μεγάρου, η ημέρα είναι ειδικά για τους 60 μαθητές που δήλωσαν συμμετοχή μετά από ανοιχτό κάλεσμα και θα εκπροσωπήσουν 15 σχολεία ή οργανισμούς σχετικούς με την εκπαίδευση. Κατά την διάρκεια της ημέρας θα παρακολουθήσουν εργαστήρια ρομποτικής από τους ειδικούς εκπαιδευτικούς της Robotixlab με θέμα την ανατομία των ρομπότ – hardware, περιβάλλον προγραμματισμού, δομή συμπεριφορικού προγραμματισμού (behavioral based programming) και πειράματα. HELPcare – a new SEERC project for social and health workers
SEERC initiates a new project that will help social and health care workers improve their skills and qualifications and their job status in an aging Europe. Dr Antonia Ypsilanti The world is in a constant state of change and the latest trends reveal a shift in the world’s population structure. According to projections, by 2050 one in every five people across the globe will be aged over 60 with a life expectancy of 76 years. Next to the societal challenges this leads to multiple challenges for social and health care workers in formal or informal settings. Particularly evident is the demand for more social and health care workers to support the aging population given that most EU countries will face this challenge in the near future. HELPcare (Healthcare Workers Employability Learning and Professionalization) a project led by the Management School of the University of Lancaster aims to develop a framework for improving the profession of healthcare workers in relation to their training and qualifications as well as their professional standing. It aims to create new pathways for continuous professional development (CPT) by developing online training courses (MOOCs) and a pan-European network to support their professionalization. Dr Lambros Lazuras The partners’ kick-off meeting of HELPcare was on the 28th of January in which Dr. Lambros Lazuras and Dr. Antonia Ypsilanti from SEERC participated as project managers. Dr Antonia Ypsilanti said: “One of the main strengths of this project is that social and health care workers will be directly involved in the development of this framework and act as co-researchers in collaboration with the experts of each partner country. By doing so, we are one step closer to narrowing the distance between workers, researchers and policy makers to a joint objective that will improve the conditions in this sector”. Partner countries include Italy, Bulgaria, Poland, Greece and the UK. Everyone is looking forward to a project with great impact to the society that could possibly alter the way social and health care workers are perceived and valued in Europe. Dr Eleftherakis teaches Java Programming to postgraduate students at The University of Sheffield, UK
Early February, Dr George Eleftherakis, Senior Lecturer and Research Coordinator at our Computer Science Department, was invited by The University of Sheffield, UK, to deliver the unit ‘Advanced Java Programming’ to postgraduate students of the Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Engineering in the UK. Dr. Eleftherakis delivered the unit in an intensive mode as it was completed within a week. This is one example of the many ways in which the International Faculty, CITY College cooperates with other departments and faculties within the University of Sheffield, aiming at promoting the exchange of knowledge and research while eliminating distance at the same time.

Mr Chris Liassides and Dr Ana Cruz at the 9th Learning & Teaching Conference in Sheffield, UK
Mr. Chris Liassides, Director of Postgraduate Studies at our Business Administration and Economics Department and Dr Ana Cruz, Lecturer at BAED participated as presenters in the 9th Annual Learning and Teaching Conference themed ‘Developing Student Learning Beyond Knowledge Acquisition’ that was held at the University of Sheffield, UK on 6th January 2015. Mr Chris Liassides In his presentation entitled ‘Applying theory through teamwork, Concession and Brainstroming’ Mr. Liassides explained how he managed to engage students with coursework through early stage brainstorming. Mr. Liassides presented the exercise his assigned to his students: “When I introduced the assignment to the students and went through the coursework handout with them, instead of spending 10-15 minutes doing so, I devoted almost 30 minutes and did a little exercise with them. A little brainstorming session in class. After explaining what they had to do, I asked them to get a piece of paper out and follow my instructions. I asked them, there and then, in just 2 minutes, to come up with the idea they had to work on. They all thought of it as a game, perhaps as an easy way to waste valuable teaching time --fun and games, in other words!”. During his presentation Mr. Liassides explained this learning and teaching practice and noted that the benefit was that it kept students interested throughout the course of the semester and added value to their knowledge with regard to employability, since it prepared them in dealing with similar issues at work. Dr Ana Cruz Dr. Cruz delivered a very interesting online presentation entitled ' Viral Videos: enhancing Students' digital literacy skills and employability' based on student experiential learning assignments that aimed to turn knowledge into skill. During her presentation Dr. Cruz presented the best student videos produced in 2013 and 2014 in the frame of the ‘Integrated Marketing Communications’ unit. The session provided insights into how students applied theory into action and the students’ performance. In addition, to provide a more comprehensive view, some of the students’ non-assessed self reflections were also presented. In 2014 the students worked with a client. The client’s view was also presented in the conference. Dr. Cruz's session concluded with a critical reflection of the barriers, benefits and lessons learned. Both presentations were particularly insightful and received positive comments by fellow-colleagues at the University of Sheffield.

BAED lecturers comment on the Greek Elections in online publication of the Political Studies Association, UK
Dr Gkasis and Dr Prodromidou Dr Pavlos Gkasis and Dr Alexandra Prodromidou, both Lecturers at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) and members of the Greek Politics Specialist Group of the Political Studies Association in Great Britain, have contributed with their commentaries to the Specialist Group's online pamphlet on the January 25, 2015 Greek General Elections. Dr Gkasis looks at the nature of the coalition government (no 24) and Dr Prodromidou discusses SYRIZA's victory against other candidate parties (no 15). Dr Gkasis and Dr Prodromidou work on a joined project with the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) on Greece. They are both SPERI Associate Fellows.

‘Psychology for all’ talk on Loss and Grief
Mr. Miltiadis Stabliakas, Psychologist, dealt with ‘Loss and Grief’ in his talk that took place in the frame of ‘Psychology for all’ series 28 January 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. In his insightful presentation Mr. Stabliakas discussed the importance of loss, the stages of grief and the point where grievers overcome their loss and trauma. The speaker attempted to answer the questions that torture people experiencing loss and to identify the point when grief becomes dysfunctional. Mr. Stabliakas held a very interesting discussion with the audience that was particularly interested in the topic of the presentation.

3rd Robotics Challenge by our Computer Science Department
The 3rd Robotics Challenge for all 3rd level computer science students entitled “Design and Build a Robotic Ant Colony” was held with great success 22 and 23 January 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The two-day event was part of the "Agents and Robotics" unit, led by Dr Kostantinos Dimopoulos. In the frame of the challenge, students had to build robots and programme them to face a series of challenges each a bit more difficult from the previous one. This year the challenges where leading to the development of robotic ants. Simple robots would search their environments looking for two things: food and their nest. Once a new nest was discovered by an ant, the ant would communicate the information to the other ants. In a similar manner, when an ant located food that it could not pick up, it would also communicate this to the other ants. The aim was for the ants to forage their food. The students worked in groups and developed a robot to face the given challenges. They had to research similar robots and suggest solutions, build the robots, using the Lego Mindstorms platform, and programme the robots, thus using all the skills and knowledge they acquired from their studies and specifically at the unit. The students were very excited with this year’s challenge. In fact, they asked for the challenge to be extended and although the event was schedule to last from 10am to 5pm for two-consecutive days, students insisted to continue until the Faculty’s premises were closed. Finally the challenge was successfully completed by most groups.

Our Postgraduate Students in Athens Pitch their Startup to Jury of Renowned Experts
‘Car-care’ is the winning venture idea project presented by a group of postgraduate students in Athens and voted by an expert jury, in the frame of the unit ‘Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship’ led by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal for Research, Innovation and External Relations at our Faculty. As part of their coursework, ten groups of four students each, attending our MSc in Management of Business, Innovation & Technology (ΜΒΙΤ) programme in Athens in collaboration with Athens Tech, presented their project on a proposed new venture before a jury of renowned experts from the industry and academia. The jury panel comprised Mr. Petros Kokkalis, Vice President of the Kokkalis Foundation, Ms. Leda Karabela, Certified Coach for startups with many years of experience from Silicon Valley, Mr. Harry Daskalakis, CEO of Athens Tech College and Mr. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger, Lecturer at our Business Administration & Economics Department. The students were asked to come up with a start-up idea and put together a business plan describing and justifying the problems, the opportunities and potential gaps their venture might address. Each team held a five-minute presentation before the jury members and the rest of the teams, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. In the voting procedure that took place after the conclusion of the presentations ‘Car-care’ - a smart in-car health care system to provide risk reduction before and while driving- received most of the jury’s votes, followed by ‘Argoguide’ and ‘PCP-Tomatoes’ while ‘Unify-Terra’ was the ‘People’s Choice’ (peer vote). The ‘Car-care’ team consisted of the following students: Afroditi Tzoumerkioti, Anastasios Tripolitis, Ioannis Theocharis and Theodora Prodromou. Jury members were highly impressed by the quality of our students’ work, their enthusiasm and their presentation skills. The students who come from a variety of national and professional backgrounds agreed that this hands-on experience was an enjoyable and well-appreciated enhancement of their curriculum and a valuable asset for future career options.
