Seminars from Students to Students by our AIESEC Specialised Unit

  The Specialised Operational Unit of AIESEC established at the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College in Thessaloniki has already started organizing activities at our main campus and launched the series of ‘Personal Development Seminars’. Three seminars have taken place so far, delivered from students to students aiming at helping them correspond to their academic obligations and prepare them for their future career.  Entitled ‘Time and Stress Management’ the first seminar took place at the beginning of the academic year and focused on effectively organising study time and student activities in order to minimize stress. The second seminar was on ‘Conversation Skills & Body Language Use’ aimed at improving students’ communication skills, an important basis of success both at a personal and professional level. ‘Get to know your Motivation’ was the title of the last seminar which took place in order to help students identify their inner motivation and use it as drive to achieve their goals. All seminar were organised by the AIESEC – CITY team, namely Team Leader Nikolas - Marwan Zawaher together with Giorgos Tsoulkanidis, Vachos Xantinidis, Martha Natsi and Nita Skenderi. The events pulled a full house proving our students’ high interest in interesting topics about personal development. Led by a team of students and with our student Nikolas - Marwan Zawaher as team leader the AIESEC Specialised Unit aspires to provide our students with opportunities to join AIESEC programmes, develop their leadership skills, create an international exchange network, offer internship opportunities and enrich the overall student experience. With this establishment, AIESEC-CITY wants to provide students with all services that AIESEC provides to its members worldwide. Additionally, as an expansion unit of AIESEC University of Macedonia - Local Committee, we benefit from the most successful local committee in Greece through the knowledge background on the sector, but the same time we are free to develop a CITY College Centered AIESEC Profile aiming at better supporting students at the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield. Our Unit's vision is to provide students with volunteering and work experiences that can shape their future and especially their leadership profile." Lecture by Dr Dimitriadis at Managers Academy in Skopje

Dr Nikos Dimitriadis, Development Director of EDI, led the second weekend lecture of the year for Managers Academy in Skopje at Hotel TCC Grand Plaza, on 5-7 December. Dr Dimitriadis delivered the unit ‘Market Driven Strategies for Sustainable Growth’ of the ‘Strategic Marketing and Management’ track to 25 participants from the Ministry of Education and Science as well as postgraduate students of the Academy. During his presentation Dr Dimitriadis talked about market-driven approaches that businesses can adopt in order to fully benefit from their expertise, develop and develop industry-leading advantages and build sustainable growth. Participants found Dr Dimitriadis’ lively presentation particularly informative. The Managers’ Academy is established under the academic authority of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in collaboration with the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce and supported by the Macedonian Ministry of Education and Science. The core mission of the Managers Academy is vocational training and qualifications attainment, including numerous complementary services that will benefit its members and advance their professional skills and status.

Project on viral videos by our students

What makes videos go viral? Marketing students’ creativity was put to the test with this key question. Rather than just writing an essay, final year students of the BA (Hons) in Business Studies (Marketing) programme were asked to develop viral videos for a client, in the frame of ‘Integrated marketing communications’ module led by Dr. Ana Cruz. These included a video focusing on the student life at the International Faculty, CITY College or a viral advert promoting the new postgraduate programme MA in Digital Marketing and Social Media. The viral videos achieved over 4946 views- a remarkably difficult achievement! The project aimed at enhancing the students’ experience, cultural agility and employability. This was a fun and engaging way to learn critically and creatively how theory and research inform practice.

Executive MBA Induction Days 2014

Thessaloniki – Bucharest – Belgrade – Kyiv MBA Induction Days marked the beginning of academic year 2014-15 for our Executive MBA programme in all four countries where it currently runs. During Induction Days students in all countries had the opportunity to meet their classmates and some of their professors. The induction days have been designed to provide a gateway to the MBA programme and prepare students for their studies. In all countries Induction Days were followed by the first weekend classes for this academic year.   Thessaloniki In Thessaloniki the MBA Induction took place on 30-31 of October for Cohort 22. The Director of the programme, Mr George Efstathiadis enthusiastically welcomed the students and wished them a successful academic year. Dr Megaklis Petmezas, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, Dr Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration & Economics Department, Mr Stelios Kehaghias, Senior Lecturer, Mr Chris Liassides, Director of the Postgraduate Programmes at BAED also participated in the induction.   Belgrade In Belgrade the Induction took place on the 25th of October at Hotel Falkensteiner in Belgrade.  Students were welcomed by Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the MBA programme and Dr Nikolalos Dimitriadis, the Development Director of EDI and also Director of the International Faculty’s representative office in Belgrade. "My MBA experience" presentation was delivered by Mr Miroslav Grbovic, Customer Centricity Program Manager at Telenor Srbija, who spoke to new MBA students about his study years at the Executive MBA and the valuable knowledge gained. Students enjoyed induction and are looking forward to experiencing the MBA programme.   Bucharest Induction days for our Executive MBA in Romania took place on 13-14 of November at the Hilton Hotel in Bucharest. Dr Megaklis Petmezas, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the programme, Mr Nikos Lambridis, Executive MBA Student Coach and Organizational Behaviour unit leader and Dr Alexandros Psychogios, Senior Lecturer, welcomed the students and provided useful information about the programme. Also our alumnus, Cristina Viisoreanu, who graduated with distinction, shared with the newcomers her EMBA experience. Like previous years, middle and top management managers and professionals from different industry sectors, primarily from Romania, Moldavia but other countries too are attending the programme.   Kyiv In Kyiv the MBA Induction took place at the House of Pashkov on 20 November. Dr Leslie Szamosi and Dr Nikos Dimitriadis opened the programme and welcomed all students. Also, Ms Maryna Saprykina, student currently working on her dissertation, who is Director of Center for CSR Development, presented her personal experience of study in the program and gave valuable advice on how to manage time efficiently within this rigorous programme and follow all academic requirements and rules. Middle and top managers of international corporations and organizations operating in Ukraine, Belarus and other countries, joined the programme in order to obtain to get the internationally recognised MBA degree of the University of Sheffield and explore the benefits of international exposure and networking for further career development in Europe.

Prof. Ketikidis delivers successful presentation on ‘Cross Entrepreneurship’

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis delivered an insightful presentation on ‘Cross Entrepreneurship’ at the first conference organised by the Association of Economists and Related Disciplines (EOSEE) on 1 December 2014 in Thessaloniki. With more than 250 university students attending the event, Prof. Ketikidis discussed the art business collaborations, Triple Helix and the extraversion in youth entrepreneurship. Entitled ‘Cross Entrepreneurship – Financial Tools and Investment Co-Funded Programs at the core of innovation’ the event presented practical aspects of entrepreneurship, collaborations in the private and public sector, funding programmes and traditional and innovative funding schemes. Participants found Prof. Ketikidis’ presentation particularly enlightening and engaged a vivid Q&A session with the speaker.

The ‘Go Green Team’ started recruiting!

Students of the ‘Go Green Team’, who have been recycling paper across our main campus in Thessaloniki, successfully expanded their project to collection of plastic cups and other plastic-made materials, a concept they have been meaning to work on for quite some time now. Student-volunteers enthusiastically joined the project, which will consist of collecting one recycling bin per week in each of the sites at the Thessaloniki campus. Volunteers who will collect a total of 16 recycling bins by the end of the year will receive a Volunteering Certificate. Moreover, this activity is eligible for use in the Sheffield Graduate Award, under the “Volunteering” section. Students who are still interested in joining this initiative may send an email at mbarbu@city.academic.gr.

Peer Support Scheme: Student-led support on stress-related issues

In search of more ways to provide support for academic and personal worries to our students, the Department of Student and Affairs with the support of the Psychology Department introduces this academic year the programme ‘Peer Support on stress-related issues’. This service allows students, to discuss informally and in strict confidence stress related issues, while in college with peer support students. Peer support students, who are supervised by counsellors from our Psychology Department, offer one-to-one support, listen, understand and assist fellow students to find new ways to cope with the stress of college life. All students of all programmes and years of study can contact a peer supporter. Student peer supporters are available on Fridays 1pm-3pm, at the “employability corner” of the ILC. The ‘Peer support’ scheme is another innovative initiative of the International Faculty in line with its goal to offer quality service to its students and help them in any possible way.
