Introducing our new Students’ Union Board (CSU) 2014-15
Like every year, the 2014 electoral period at the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, concluded with the election of 53 class representatives and 5 Student Union Officers, elected by the entire student body at the Faculty’s main campus in Thessaloniki. Vachos Xantinidis, 2nd level student of the BA (Hons) in Business Studies at Business Administration & Economics Department is the new CSU President. Vachos together with the four other members of the board, namely, Nikos Mantsios, PR Officer, Miruna Barbu, Welfare & Educational Officer, Mpampis Trasanidis, Sports & Events Officer and Treasurer, Kristina Karatoli represent the student body voice for this year and are very enthusiastic about their new role. The new CSU has already started planning activities and setting new goals for this academic year. All students are encouraged to become active and join or even suggest new initiatives for this year. After their election the five CSU Officers made the following preliminary statements: Vachos Xantinidis, CSU President As President of CITY's Students' Union, my goal is to bring together all students through collaboration and activities, and lead CSU team effectively in order to achieve great results. Successful come-back for ‘Psychology for all’ open seminar series
Our Psychology Department re-launched for academic year 2014-15 the ‘Psychology for all’ open seminar series that has been running successfully at our main campus in Thessaloniki for the past few years. The opening event featured Dr. Elisavet Chrysohoou, Lecturer at our Psychology Department, who held an insightful presentation on ‘Emotions and Logic’. The event took place on 26 November 2014 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. With her presentation entitled ‘Emotion … and logic. How to understand and control our emotions for a better quality of life’ Dr. Chrysohoou explained how important it is to understand our own and other people’s feelings and outlined ways in which we can effectively control feelings in order to improve our relationships with others and the quality of our lives in general. The event pulled a full-house and concluded with a vivid Q&A between the audience and the speaker. The series will continue to host 1-hour talks by different guest speakers specialising in different psychology areas who will be sharing their knowledge and expertise with a varied audience. Company visit to E.J. Papadopoulos biscuit company for our business students
A group of business students from the final year of the BA in Business Studies (Marketing) programme visited the premises of E.J. Papadopoulos SA, one of the leading companies in biscuit industry in Greece. The visit proved to be a truly unique learning experience for our students. The company hosted a factory visit for our students where they had the opportunity to meet Mr. Michael Mavroudis, the company’s Brand Manager, who flew from Athens to Thessaloniki particularly to lead the company visit. Mr. Mavroudis briefed the students and presented an insightful case study on the Caprice brand. Company visits and working with industry are vital to enhance our students’ employability. This year students will develop an integrated marketing communications plan for the company’s brand Caprice. We are looking forward to the creative and freshly baked ideas!

Dr Kalyva at the AIESEC’s Youth Today Conference
Dr Frosso Kalyva, Honorary Senior Lecturer at our Psychology Department, held an insightful presentation at the Youth Today Conference which was organised by AIESEC, on the 20th- 21st November, at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki. In her presentation entitled “Promoting the participation of young people in the decision making” Dr Kalyva explained what decision making is and how young people and even children can contribute to this procedure. The key message of her speech was “if we want to make the world a better place first we have to improve ourselves”. Dr Kalyva advised students to first develop their self-awareness in order to participate in decision-making procedures. The interactive seminar gave the opportunity to young students, to participate in certain practices initiating their motivation to become even more active in the society. Youth Today was organised for the first time in Thessaloniki and its main aims were to connect youth with business, with their strengths and dreams and with their actions which can have a positive impact both on their lives and the society. The International Faculty, CITY College is a platinum partner of AIESEC and has its own specialised AIESEC unit. SEERC presents two papers at the 18 Panhellenic Logistics Conference
The 18th Panhellenic Logistics Conference that took place in Thessaloniki at the MET Hotel on 18-19 Nov 2014 featured a wide variety of stimulating papers and inspiring keynote speakers. From SEERC, Dr Lambros Lazouras and Mr Andreas Baresel-Bofinger presented two well-received papers entitled ‘Adoption of Smart Logistics: From Testbeds to Successful Implementation’ and ‘Drivers and Barriers to Green Freight Transportation: Industry evidence from UK and India’. One of the main messages of the conference was the role of (smart) logistics and supply chain management as a key enabler for innovation in the light of the global renaissance of manufacturing, and in particular the re-industrialisation of Europe. As pointed out by keynote speaker Thorsten Hülsmann from the Efficiency Cluster Logistics Ruhr of Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, big companies, such as the German car manufacturer Volkswagen, achieve up to 65% of their total created value through their supply chain management. Prof. Sirpa Kurppa from MTT Agrifood Research Finland, a specialist in agroecology and environmental sustainability of food production systems illustrated the development of the green economy towards the concept of bioeconomy and directed the audience’s view to the future trend of bio-ecomimicry (industrial ecology). Supporting the ‘1st Business Networking’ by the Thessaloniki TEI Marketing Club
The International Faculty sponsored the ‘1st Business Networking’ organised by the Marketing Club of Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Thessaloniki at Excelsior Hotel, on 11 November 2014 in Thessaloniki. Themed ‘The opportunity that I took advantage of and the one that I missed’ the event attracted many businessmen and entrepreneurs of Thessaloniki who shared their experiences on opportunities they took and others that they missed during the period of economic crisis. As presented by the President of the Club, Mr. Tsabikos Kokkaris, ‘Business Networking’ is a new initiative aiming at broadening the club members’ business network, enhancing their knowledge and business opportunities, as well as supporting profitable collaborations between them. The International Faculty acts as the annual sponsor of the events organised by the Thessaloniki TEI Marketing Club in line with its strategy to link academia with the industry and make a positive contribution to society.

SEERC’s Greek delegation at the 6th Balkan Venture Forum in Slovenia
Participants of SEERC’s Greek delegation to the 6th Balkan Venture Forum in Slovenia on 12-13 Nov 2014 agree: It was a great experience! SEERC participated at the Balkan Venture Forum in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, on 12-13 Nov 2014, with a strong delegation of promising startups and key stakeholders from various parts of Greece. The 6th Balkan Venture Forum – COINVEST edition ended with great success. A total of 300 participants from 25 countries, including 70 investors and 55 startups, gathered in the halls of the Perla Casino Hotel. Circumventing the risks of the gambling tables, investors flocked into the main hall to seek better investment opportunities where startups from the entire region of South East Europe took the stage to pitch their business ventures. The teams had qualified after a rigorous pre-selection process and went through a training pitch session the day before the Forum. The Forum saw also a great number of inspiring presentations by successful entrepreneurs and investors, such as Torbjorn ‘Toby’ Jorgensen (Federation X and the Ten Legions) from Sweden, and Baybars Altuntas (president of the Business Angels Association) of Turkey, insightful roundtable discussions about topics, such as ‘Open innovation in corporations: Internal and external startups’ led by Branislav Vujovic from Austria (New Frontier Group) and ‘What can startups expect from an accelerator?’ led by Adriane Thrash (InnovationFarm) from Greece, and many more. Representatives of European institutions, such as the European Commission and the European Investment Fund were present as well as officials from the Slovenian government that participated in a High Level Policy meeting where urgent topics were discussed, such as possible ways how to improve the appearance of the region of South East Europe on the international investor map and how to foster the important role of Business Angels in this region. SEERC is the Greek partner in the EU co-funded project VIBE (Venture Initiative in the Balkan Europe) that co-organised the Balkan Venture Forum. Although in spite of their excellent performance in a very strong competition there was no Greek startup among the winners, in the end all participants from Greece agreed that it was a unique and precious experience. Congratulations to all the winning startups: Slovenia: Edgar, Kanas, Adora, GoOpti, Sensilab, Kinestica, Doctrina; Luxembourg: Sensilab; Italy: DiabetesLab, and Hungary: HandInScan. The Balkan Venture Forum will take place again in 2015. VIBE (Venture Initiative in the Balkan Europe) is an EU co-funded project in the framework of the ‘SEE Transnational Cooperation Programme’ with the primary objective to support facilitation of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region of South-East Europe. VIBE (www.vibeproject.eu) aims at fostering the creation and growth of innovative SMEs and start-up companies through a large array of actions and tools, such as the online directory of key stakeholders in the SEE entrepreneurial landscape.

MBA lecturer, Mr. Ioannis Kantartzis, participates in London Money Show
Mr. Ioannis Kantartzis, Lecturer at our Executive MBA programme and editor-in-chief and publisher of TRADERS' magazine for the English, Spanish and Greek language, was invited to participate in London World Money Show, that took place in London, 7-8 November 2014. At the event Mr. Kantartzis acted as moderator of a panel of four distinguished traders from all over the world who discussed the topic "Mechanical trading v cross-market analysis - two different approaches, one common goal". The panel was well-attended and was promoted by the Money Show via a recorded session. Mr. Kantartzis has been teaching relevant issues on trading, derivatives and portfolio management at our Executive MBA programme since 2002. He has also been acting as module leader since 2004 of the International Financial Management EXEC MBA course.
