Celebrating the 10th anniversary of SEERC at Sheffield
10 years of research excellence and challenges Throughout the year of 2014 our research centre, SEERC, celebrates a decade of continuous presence and research activity in the South East European region. The “SEERC Awareness Week” that took place at the University of Sheffield, UK, 18-21 November 2014, marked the celebrations of SEERC’s 10th anniversary. Delegates from SEERC and the International Faculty, including Mr. Nikos Zaharis, Director of SEERC and Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Chairman of SEERC Management Committee, attended the SEERC’s week at Sheffield. The eventful week at Sheffield included interesting seminars and workshops while it gave the opportunity to the Sheffield community in the UK to get to know more about SEERC and its achievements. “I am delighted that SEERC celebrated its 10th anniversary at the University of Sheffield. The awareness week at Sheffield was a great success and proved that interdisciplinary studies and research hold the key to uncovering new knowledge and solutions to the complex problems of tomorrow. Together with the collective efforts of all faculties, staff, students of the University, it is vital to enhance our research focus to add value to the society and drives long-term competitiveness and growth in the area of South East Europe”, said Prof. Ketikidis. Mr. Zaharis commented: “SEERC Awareness Week at Sheffield gave the opportunity to colleagues, researchers and students from Sheffield to come together with peers from the International Faculty, celebrate the achievements of the past years and most importantly discuss future plans for research that addresses major societal problems in South East Europe and beyond.” During this past decade SEERC has undertaken and carried out important research has published research findings, held numerous events including its Annual Doctoral Conference, recruited researchers from across South East and Eastern Europe, established strategic partnerships and a rigid Doctoral Programme. SEERC was established as a legal entity on 6 February 2004. Looking forward for another decade of success! Warm congratulations are in order for our graduates namely, Maria Gaci (BSc in Computer Science), Stephanie Hatzifilalithis (BSc in Psychology), Alexandra Christina Patrascu (BSc in Computer Science), Panagiotis Michael Tsakiris (BSc in Computer Science) and Nikolaos Marwan Zawaher (BSc in Psychology) who are this year’s Sheffield Graduate Award winners. The five students worked in parallel to their studies and expanded their skills and knowledge by getting involved in a variety of valuable activities. Indicatively, some of the activities they participated in involved: charity initiatives and community volunteering, the Annual Students’ Spring Symposium, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and other initiatives and events of the International Faculty. They also presented substantial work experience and worked on various international projects while some of the winners acted during their studies as class representatives. Upon the completion of their studies they managed to accumulate the number of hours necessary for the Sheffield Graduate Award. The University of Sheffield introduced this award wishing to produce graduates with distinctive qualities that every typical Sheffield graduate should have, such as drive for personal growth and self - improvement, enterprise and life skills development.
