Keynote speech: "Cloud Service Brokerage" at the Technology Forum by SEERC's researchers
Dr Iraklis Paraskakis and Dr Simos Veloudis Friday, 27 June: Dr Iraklis Paraskakis, Senior Research Officer and Dr Simos Veloudis Research Associate at SEERC, presented their keynote speech at the Technology Forum. Their project is titled "Cloud Service Brokerage"and it's part of the "Cloud computing" section of the forum. The research is conducted by IKM (Information and Knowledge Management Research Cluster - IKM (www.seerc.org/ikm) in the frame of SEERC's project titled Broker@Cloud. The research examines the development of the appropriate methods and mechanisms which provide to businesses a series of intercessory services. Many pioneering and leading technology professionals and academics from Thessaloniki and Northern Greece participate in the forum. The forum is organized by SEPVE, CERTH, SEVE with the support of University of Macedonia and the Aristotle University. The event is under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. Round Table discussion moderated by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis The forum closes with a round table discussion with subject: "Technological innovation: how can it be achieved". The moderator of the discussion is Prof. Ketikidis, Vice-principal for Research, Innovation and External Relations, CITY College, International Faculty of TUoS. PhD student, Mr. George Pavlidis is among the finalists in Destination Change: New Solutions for Greece
Mr. George Pavlidis Mr. George Pavlidis, PhD student at SEERC, the Research Centre of CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, has been selected as one of the finalists in the competition Destination Change: New Solutions for Greece. The competition is a collaborative effort by Ashoka, The Hellenic Initiative, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, Boehringer Ingelheim Ellas, and SAP Hellas in order to generate innovative solutions for social change in Greece. The top four entries will receive €10 000 and one winner will also receive licenses for three users for SAP Business One software. Mr. Pavlidis’ entry is the “50+ Technology” project that is actualized in the premises of CITY College. The project has the purpose to educate people over the age of 50 about basic computer and tablet skills. Instead of giving a lecture on the subject, senior students are taught by young college students on a one-on-one basis In addition to helping the older generation find ways to facilitate communication, young students are provided with the opportunity to interact with seniors, become aware of the issues related to the ageing population, and gain practical experience. Mr. George Pavlidis is currently conducting research for his PhD about social factors’ influence on cognitive decline in the elderly population. He holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology from CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield. This is not the first time Mr. Pavlidis has been recognised for his work. He was been awarded with the Sheffield Graduate Award, and the Santander Research Mobility Reward from the University of Sheffield on two occasions. Before pursuing his academic career, Mr. Pavlidis was a professional basketball player.

CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, joins the AIESEC network
It is now official that CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, is one of the over 2400 universities worldwide that are a part of the AIESEC network. AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organisation with a total of over 86000 members in 124 countries. The purpose of the organisation is to develop responsible, global leaders for the future by providing leadership development experiences. In addition to offering members leadership opportunities at their local committee, AIESEC also provides students and recent graduates the chance to go abroad on professional internships or volunteering experiences. It is an excellent opportunity to gain work-related experience, explore a different culture, and create a global network. Successful alumni reunion took place in Sofia, Bulgaria at the British Residence
On June 19th, a number of The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College alumni currently residing in Bulgaria attended an alumni reunion at the British Residence in central Sofia, Bulgaria. The event was hosted by the ambassador of Great Britain to the republic of Bulgaria, His Excellency Jonathan Allen and International Faculty, CITY College Principal Mr Yannis Ververidis. Tanja Kuzman, alumna of the MSc in Banking and Finance is among the top 100 Leaders of Tomorrow
Tanja Kuzman is a proud alumna of the MSc in Banking and Finance programme of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. Ms Kuzman was selected as one of the 100 Leaders of Tomorrow of the whole world and at the symposium of Leaders of Today and Leaders of Tomorrow in St. Gallen (Switzerland) was the only one from the region of Western Balkans. Currently, she is working as consultant for the World Bank and Director of the Center for Advancement of Competitiveness (affiliated institution of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School). Moreover, Tanja works as Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Economics, Finance and Administration and consultant of the Center for Advanced Economic Studies. Ms Kuzman's impressions from St. Gallen symposium 26 students of the University of St. Gallen took a year off as to organize the 44th St. Gallen symposium called "The Clash of Generations" worked as support crew so that each and every detail of the symposium is perfect, and indeed, it was. In one place, Leaders of Today and Leaders of Tomorrow have met to discuss whether there is a conflict of generations, which global problems need to be solved, what Leaders of Today leave as a legacy for Leaders of Tomorrow, which expectations have generations X and Y etc. Ms Kuzman states: "as Leaders of Tomorrow we were given an amazing opportunity to meet people with impressive careers and conduct formal and informal discussions with Leaders of Today. In the end, we all went home with the feeling that we have become a part of one large family with whom we have the ability to change the world."

Alumni Reunion in Skopje
The Alumni Reunion in Skopje took place on Wednesday, June 18. The event, which took place at the ABC Tennis Club in Skopje and despite the rain it attracted more than 250 alumni of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. CSU hosts graduation party on June 27
To celebrate graduation and to party together one last time, the CITY Students’ Union (CSU) will host a graduation party on June 27 at 21.30. The party will take place at Ocean Club in Neapoli, 1 Odissea Eliti Street. Entertainment will be in the form of a live performance by CITY College’s own band, The Groovies. Tickets cost €30 and can be purchased in advance at the CSU office. The price includes both unlimited drinks and a buffet.

Two new books by Dr Lazuras on smoking, nicotine dependence and quitting
Dr Lambros Lazuras, Lecturer at the Psychology Department, University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College and Research Associate at SEERC was invited to present his two new books in Cyprus in the frame of the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The event was organized by the American Medical Center / American Heart Institute (AMC/AHI) in cooperation with the Medical Association of Nicosia - Kerynias "Ippocrates" and the publisher "En Typois". The two books are part of a trilogy which covers the nicotine dependence, the decision to quit smoking and practical actions and advice which are useful in order to successfully quit smoking. The first book "Nicotine Confesses" was written by Dr Joseph R. DiFranza, Massachusetts University, and it was translated by Dr Lazouras and Mr Elpidoforos Sotiriadis. The second book "A decision of a half million euro" is dedicated to young smokers and not only!

The International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, hosts the 'Mentor’s Mix M2'
on its premises in L. Sofou 3, 5th floor, on 13-14 June, 2014 Innovation Farm invites coaches, mentors and similar stakeholders to ‘Mentor’s Mix’, a very different event and unique learning experience that addresses those who work or deal with mentoring and coaching startup teams or startup companies. In this two-day mini bootcamp the team of Innovation Farm, founded by Argyris Spiridis, will share in a practical and interactive way the experiences and insights they have gained through their interaction with startup teams within their Stage One Accelerator programme. The programme starts on Friday June 13, through practical seminars on the modern logic of Lean Startup and new business and investment trends and is completed on Saturday June 14 with an intensive full-day workshop that places the mentors and coaches in the position of the startups teams they are usually coaching, and makes them go through a wide array of co-working exercises themselves. Professors and executives from MOKE, startup coaches, business consultants and business executives are the audience invited to experience this different type of event reversing the usually assigned role for two very special days. Mentor Mix is hosted by CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, on its premises in L. Sofou 3, and is supported by the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC) and the Unit for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of ATEI Thessaloniki. The working language will be foremost Greek. 50+ Technology project helps seniors in embracing technology and improving their quality of life
The project aims at introducing senior individuals in technological means in order to increase their well being and quality of life. This is achieved by helping seniors in enhancing technology, consequently embracing communication and information. Through intergenerational learning in a classroom setting, young students tutor seniors on one-to-one basis, in basic skills of operating computers and tablets. The project is run by the founder Mr George Pavlidis, with the support of Dr Ana Vivas, Head of the Psychology department at CITY College. Two coordinators, who are students of CITY College, organise a class of 15 seniors and 15 volunteers. The project is supported by 50+ Hellas, for communication, funding and networking purposes. SEERC Team participated in the 7th International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development
SEERC Team participated during 5-6 June 2014 in Nicosia, Cyprus at the 7th International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development (ICEIRD). ICEIRD aimed to provide an effective channel of communication between decision-makers (government, ministries and state agencies), researchers (universities, research and development centres, start-up centres and incubators), practitioners (SME leaders and managers) and persons concerned with the latest research, scientific development and practice on innovation and entrepreneurship in order to discuss topics that are of currency, relevance and significance for national competitiveness as well as sustainable, robust , and equitable regional development. ICEIRD14 aimed to: Address key factors in regional economic development, entrepreneurial vitality and innovation processes Raise the level of awareness about innovation, entrepreneurship and competitive advantage Strengthen the regional and international network among representatives from SEE countries and those from EU member states Consolidate intra-SEE networks of SMEs, Start-up Centres and Incubators Understand cultural and national barriers of entrepreneurship in the global economy Promote best practices in innovation research and business development Facilitate regional partnerships and innovation networks SEERC was represented by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis (the founder of the ICEIRD series of conferences), Mr Adrian Solomon (Research Associate and PhD Candidate at SEERC) and Mr Andreas Baresel-Bofinger (Lecturer at CITY College and PhD Candidate at SEERC). The participants presented two papers and were involved in the organization of a roundtable discussion for university - industry - government interactions for Cyprus organized together with the Triple Helix Association Chapter of Greece (which was attended by high representatives from Cyprus). Knowledge, Implementation, Volunteerism! The three key words of our youth's success
Volunteerism in Thessaloniki - A video about the implementation of various volunteering projects which were initiated and pulled through by the International Faculty's students and staff. (in Greek) We often pointed out the importance of volunteerism and how rewarding is giving and helping. This video is in Greek since it refers to actions and projects taken place in Thessaloniki, where our main campus is, and also involved the people of Thessaloniki. Nevertheless, the video is just a short reference and tribute to all the wonderful projects that our students undertook with the help of their lecturers. Some of these projects which are mentioned in the video are: - the creation of the Spastics Society of Northern Greece website - the creation of Children's museum of Thessaloniki website - the creation of the Parents' Association with children suffering with neoplasmatic diseases website - the creation of bookbook.gr - the creation of a software for the Alzheimer Association of Northern Greece. Moreover, our institution has already included in the programme of studies modules which promote the social responsibility and the consciousness of giving back and making an impact to the world around us, especially to people who need our help.
