8th Annual Learning and Teaching Conference at The University of Sheffield
The 8th Learning & Teaching Conference was held in Sheffield in Tuesday 7 January 2014. The theme was "Digital Possibilities: Inspiring Learning Through Technology" and 42 presentations/events took place. There were more than 80 proposals submitted. The abstracts and presentation can be found here . The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College was yet another time present in this significant event. This year there were 4 contributions: Dr Ana Cruz, Engaging students through video projects Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou, Adopting Facebook as a Learning Management System Dr Leslie Szamosi, The Living Case Study Approach to Executive Teaching: A Weekend of Power Learning Supported By E-Resources Prof. Petros Kefalas & Ms Anna Sotiriadou,The e-nternational Faculty e-xperiences All presentations were well received by the audience which exceeded 400 staff and students. CITY College showed that it is well on board in adopting and using Learning Technologies. The plenary session on MOOCs and iTUNES U was broadcasted live for colleagues in Thessaloniki in the auditorium. It was the first time we attempted this and went on without major problems thanks to colleagues at CiCS and IT Support at Sofou. Dr. Leslie Szamosi presented live though webex, something that demonstrated the International Faculty capacity to perform such activities in practice and of course went along the conference theme. Congratulations to our lecturers whose presentations had great impact to those attended and acted as means to disseminate our good practice.

Company Visit at AB Vasilopoulos
3rd Level Management Track and MSc in Logistics & SCM students had the chance to experience a first class tour and presentation at AB VASILOPOULOS warehouses, providing them with the opportunity to combine the theoretical knowledge that was obtained in class with the applied practices examined at premises. The students had the chance to realize how strategic issues, displayed and discussed during the articulated presentation are supported by operational (warehouse) tasks on a daily basis. We would like to express our appreciation to Mr. D. Dakos, Head of Distribution Center (Northern Greece), for accepting us, giving the presentation and the tour to our students.

Joint European Masters programme in Search and Social Media Marketing (JEMSS)
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College is working in a leading international partnership to develop and offer students across Europe a joint masters programme in Search and Social Media Marketing (JEMMS). JEMMS started on the 1st of October 2013 and is due to be completed in 2016. The project is founded by the European Union as part of the Erasmus Lifelong Learning programme and is aligned with the European agenda 2020 which recognises the need for digital literacy skills. JEMMS will complement the portfolio of leading Master courses offered by the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. By collaborating with academia, industry and students JEMMS will address four key challenges (i) the lack of Search and Social Media Marketing and digitally skilled employees, (ii) the low employability opportunities for graduates, (iii) Search and Social Media Marketing as catalysts to help grow the European economy and (iv) problems with traditional university apprenticeship models. JEMSS will draw together organisations, universities and students through a new apprenticeship model, with benefit for all parties. The international consortium include CITY College (Greece), The University of Salford (UK), Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), University of Lodz (Poland), University of National and World Economy (UNWE) (Bulgaria), expert digital marketing recruitment agency - Candidate Ltd (UK) and a key international advertising agency - ilyan.com . CITY College is leading the project's quality assurance and will be responsible for producing the JEMSS core textbook on Search and Social Media Marketing. Get involved in this exciting project! There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved in JEMMS from participating in research, to actually taking part in writing some of the book chapters. Interested? The team competed with hundreds of startups from across the world and was voted to the top 3 in the E-Commerce Circle of Global Startup Battle. Goodvid.io is a start-up team founded by Mr. Constantinos Bratanis and Mr. Dimitrios Kourtesis , PhD students of our research centre, SEERC. Our business students visit the Thessaloniki Concert Hall
Our 3rd level business escorted by their lecturer Dr. Ana Cruz, visited the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, one of the major cultural centres of Thessaloniki, hosting the city's major cultural events. Mr. Makis Monastiridis, Marketing Manager of the Concert Hall, shared with our students the marketing strategy for the promotion of cultural events. The visit took place as part of the Integrated Marketing Communications module. During the visit the students also had a sneak preview of the wonderful stage for 'The Nutcraker' show. This added a festive spice to an insightful company visit.

MBA scholarship for the best leader in Romania, the Governor of the National Bank of Romania
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, offered a 50% MBA scholarship to Mr Mugur Isarescu, Governor of the National Bank of Romania, at the awarding of the Prize of ‘Best Leader’ which he received at the Cariere Magazine Gala. The event took place in Bucharest, 5 December 2013. Our Country Manager in Romania, Ms. Alina Vasile, gave the prize of ‘Best Leader in Romania’ and offered the MBA scholarship to Mr Mihai Mititelu, Head of Training and Development of the National Bank, who represented Mr Isarescu at the ceremony since he wasn’t able to attend. Celebrating its 10 years, Cariere magazine offered a series of prizes (eg. For the best entrepreneur, best general manager, best coach, best leader in Romania etc.) based on readers’ vote, in order to honour prominent, successful and influential personalities from the country. Our MBA programme has been running successfully in Bucharest since 2006 attracting high-profile managers and professionals from the country. We are happy that Mr Isarescu (or another representative from the management team of the National Bank of Romania) will be joining our programme and wish him best success in him future endeavours.

Guest lecture on effective event organization
An insightful and practical seminar for Year 3 Marketing students was delivered today by Ms. Monika Nagy, Information Officer at Enterprise Network Europe-Hellas. The practical tips and examples brought to life the key steps and considerations to organize successful events from beginning to end. The seminar is part of a series of guest lectures delivered as part of the Integrated Marketing Communications module. The mixture between the latest theory, research and practice are important aspects to bring closer academia and industry which is critical to enrich our students’ learning experience and improve further their employability.

First Aids Seminar for 50plus Hellas Volunteers at our Faculty
A quite unusual seminar took place at the premises of our main campus in Thessaloniki on ‘First Aids’ presented to the volunteering team of 50plus Hellas. The seminar, delivered by Mr. Thanassis Kotsampasidis, volunteer rescuer at the Greek Association for Research and Rescue, introduced participants to the basic principles of first aid, putting particular emphasis on making good decisions by staying calm and safe. During the seminar the speaker presented a series of situations and ways to give life-saving first aid. The seminar took place in the frame of meetings that 50plus Hellas volunteering team hold at our premises on a monthly basis. The team aims at improving the quality of life of those over 50 years of age in Greece, within a more equal society and through actions and activities affecting all aspects of life. The meetings take place under the supervision of Mr. George Pavlidis, PhD Candidate of Gerontology at our research centre, SEERC.

The Boris Trajkovski Scholarship Award Ceremony 2013 in Skopje
On 6th December 2013, Dr Gjorge Ivanov, the President of the country, held the Boris Trajkovski Scholarship Award Ceremony for the twenty scholarship recipients who will have the opportunity to study for the University of Sheffield Executive MBA degree offered by the University’s International Faculty CITY College in Thessaloniki. The ceremony took place at Villa Vodno, the presidential house, in Skopje with Mr. Yannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty and Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of the Executive MBA programme representing the University of Sheffield International Faculty as well as Mr. Spiro Ristovski, Minister of Education and Science. Students have already attended the first MBA weekend classes and expressed their satisfaction from the programme. The President said “With the Boris Trajkovski scholarship programme we are happy to provide a great opportunity to applicants to upgrade their talent, knowledge and skills at one prestigious university, the University of Sheffield, by attending the Executive MBA programme offered by the University’s International Faculty CITY College, in Thessaloniki”. Offered since 1993, the Executive MBA programme has alumni who hold important management and governmental positions in the country. The Boris Trajkovski Scholarship is an initiative of the late President, Boris Trajkovski, that started in 2001 and which is continued and supported by the current President Dr Gjorge Ivanov. The scholarships are co-funded by the Government (Ministry of Education and Science) and the University of Sheffield aiming at promoting executive education and providing top managers with the opportunity to obtain cost-free education from a top British University that is ranked among the best universities in the world.

PhD Candidate, Mr. Pavlidis, receives one more Santander Research Mobility Award
Mr. George Pavlidis Congratulations to Mr. George Pavlidis, PhD Candidate at our research centre, the South East European Research Centre (SEERC), for succeeding to receive for a second consecutive year the Santander Research Mobility Award from the University of Sheffield. The award amounts to £1,100.00 funding to be invested in a meta analysis study on aging. Mr Pavlidis said: “A lot of work was done last year. With the help of this grand I was introduced to the principles of meta analysis and I had a hands on experience on this technique. This year I hope that some tangible results will be available on which assessment tools are more suitable to test healthy seniors” The Santander Research Mobility Award is an up to 1200 pounds grand that encourages PhD students to form research collaboration with institutions that belong to the Santander University Network, like The University of Sheffield. University of Sheffield staff and research students who wish to carry out collaborative research with colleagues from a Santander Universities partner may apply for the award. Mr. Pavlidis graduated from the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme and he also received an MPhil in Sociological Studies. Currently he is a part time lecturer at our Faculty and a PhD Candidate on Gerontology at our research centre, SEERC.
