Dr Dimopoulos' dancing robots go to Bulgaria
3rd SEE - Science Festival Dr Kostas Dimopoulos, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department and Adrian Solomon , Researcher at SEERC visited Burgas in Bulgaria in order to participate in the 3rd SEE- Science Festival where Dr. Dimopoulos had one more opportunity to present his dancing robots. The event was held on 26-27 September 2013 in the Cultural Centre Sea Casino of Burgas in view of the spectacular Burgas bay area. The concept of the 3rd SEE Science Festival was ‘SEA OF SCIENCE - explore the sea of science with us’. Within the framework of the SEE-Science project Dr Kostas Dimopoulos has developed an activity for children and young adults where robots dance with humans. The activity was inspired by the popular TV show “Dancing with the Stars”, a dancing competitive game where popular persons (in our case, robots) are matched with dancing instructors (in our case, pilot participants), who after a training period they compete in front of an audience. A number of differently configured robots programmed using Microsoft Kinect - which enables robots to respond to certain movements of the trainer - are used and each participant pairs off with one of the robots. During the dance, the participant changes postures, making the robot appear to dance as well. This activity was designed to boost the young peoples’ interest, and especially women, in science through interactive robot games and activities. This was the third of the four Science Festivals to be organised in total within in the framework of the SEE-Science project. The first festival was organised by SEERC and NOESIS in Thessaloniki last October. Dr Dimopoulos presented his dancing robots with great success in all three SEE-Science Festivals that have taken place so far. Our reserch centre, SEERC, is a partner for the SEE- Science project. SEERC Successfully Establishes the Triple Helix Association Chapter in Greece
Our research centre, the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) took the groundbreaking initiative to form a consortium and establish the Triple helix (university, industry, government) THA Chapter in Greece. Triple helix (university, industry, government) interactions are perceived to be key to the fast paced development of the knowledge based society. Building such interactions with proper protocols and missions can lead to innovation progress, entrepreneurial capacities, and enhanced knowledge and technology transfer with the ultimate goal of a successful engagement in regional development. To this end, the Triple Helix Association (THA), organized at a global scale, aims to promote triple helix communications and to spread this vision internationally. Nevertheless, this is not the case in South East Europe and especially in Greece. Harsh economic environment, low communication among the triple helix actors, rigid structures of academic institutions, obsolete regulatory framework, lack of business-oriented culture, limited support for entrepreneurial activities, low innovation score, and severe brain drain, point towards the fact that triple helix interactions are not being performed in this area. Overall, the main aim of the THA Chapter in Greece is to create an effective dialog among national / multi-national entities in order to bolster the innovation and entrepreneurship capacity and engage in the regional development of Greece and the South East European region. More specifically, the THA Chapter in Greece intends to promote analyses and studies on the interaction between universities, firms and government aimed at translating academic models into practical achievements. It will support international exchange of scholars and educate scholars in the field of THA’s mission. It will also organize international symposia of relevant scientific interest, provide a common discussion framework for triple helix actors in order to engage in regional development of Greece and of the South East European Region, boost the innovation capacity, encourage and support entrepreneurship and fight the regional brain drain. Ultimately, the THA Chapter in Greece aims to expand to the wider South East European Region in order to create a solid developmental block with coordinated knowledge resources and activities that will help the SEE region progress.

Student from the International Faculty undertakes internship opportunity at the University of Sheffield USE, UK
Mr George Sakkiadis What better place for a university student to gain work experience that his University? George Sakkiadis, third level student at the BA (Hons) in Business Studies (Accounting and Finance) programme recently returned from Sheffield, UK where he completed a three-month internship at the University of Sheffield Enterprise Unit (USE) . Aiming at gaining work experience in the field of enterprise, George applied for the internship posted by the University and was selected among other applicants. Over the summer he worked at the University of Sheffield Enterprise Unit were he had the opportunity to assist and contribute in projects undertaken by the USE team. USE is an organisation of the University of Sheffield that helps students and graduates to ‘make their ideas happen.’ It runs events and competitions to improve their skills and help students and graduates to start their own businesses/social enterprises. The USE team works closely with academics to develop enterprise in the curriculum so that all students have access to enterprise education. While at Sheffield George enjoyed meeting people and fellow-students from different places and working with them. George said: "It’s been great pleasure for me to be a part of the USE Team this summer. Working at USE as an intern has given me the chance to meet really nice people and to do a lot of interesting and exciting stuff. In my first few months working here I learnt how to deal with new things such as the Open Days at University of Sheffield, the social enterprise events and the start-up Weekend.I learnt so many new things and I have become more confident about my skills and abilities. Perhaps the most important thing I gained while working at USE is to not be afraid to think big, and to be courageous enough to dream that I can achieve whatever I set my mind to. In other words the often used phrase, 'To make my ideas happen'. With this mindset, I am more ready than ever to embark on new challenges and try new things! I look forward to meeting and working with the USE team again." Our Psychology graduates can apply for registration to the HCPC and officially receive the title of Practitioner Psychologist
Further to the legislation of Acts passed in October 2012 in Greece our psychology graduates are now eligible to recognise their degrees as well as gain professional rights and work officially with the regulated title of ‘Psychologist’ in Greece. All our Bachelor alumni from the Psychology Department have eligibility to be licensed as ‘psychologists’, if they have extended their training at postgraduate level and/or have acquired further practical experience that can be documented, and, thus, to make use of the title 'psychologist' in Greece by first applying to the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the British regulating organisation. Applicants that meet HCPC’s requirements and succeed in becoming registered ‘Practitioner Counselling Psychologists’ may then proceed to transfer their professional rights to Greece and acquire their license. HCPC is a regulating organisation in the UK set up to protect the public. The Council keeps a register of health and care professionals who meet high standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health. Any graduate that becomes registered practitioner psychologist by HCPC be eligible to work and practice the profession of psychologist and legally use the protected title of ‘practitioner psychologist’ in the UK and in Greece (or any other European country). He/she will have the same employment rights as holders of Greek public university degrees. Ms. Athanasia Halatzouka We are proud to report the first case of a graduate of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, Ms. Athanasia Halatzouka, who became a registered ‘Practitioner Counselling Psychologist’ by HCPC after her successful application and is currently in the process to recognise her degree in Greece to officially acquire the professional title of ‘psychologist’. Athanasia completed the BSc in Psychology at the International Faculty, CITY College and furthered her knowledge by specialising in counselling psychology with the MSc in Counselling Psychology course offered by our Psychology Department, graduating in 2006. For the last three years she has her own office and works as ‘mental health professional’ in Thessaloniki practicing systemic psychotherapy and counselling. She also works at our research centre, SEERC. We believe this is a very important development for our psychology graduates and we encourage them to follow the required procedures in order to recognise their degrees and become licensed ‘psychologists’ in Greece.
