Congratulations to Mr. Thanos Hatziapostolou on receiving a 'Senate Award for Sustained Excellence' by the University of Sheffield Senate
Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou Senior Lecturer, Computer Science Department Congratulations are in order for Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou, Senior Lecturer at our Computer Science Department, for being awarded a Senate Award for Sustained Excellence in Learning & Teaching by the University of Sheffield. Mr. Hatziapostolou stood out from many talented candidates from all the other Faculties of the University of Sheffield. The award came as an official recognition and reward of Mr. Hatziapostolou’s academic competence, ethos and excellence in learning and teaching. The University of Sheffield Senate Awards Scheme aims to encourage and promote good practice, and raise the status of teaching and learning as a scholarly and inspirational activity. The Scheme rewards those who are inspirational or who demonstrate an exceptional contribution in the area of learning and teaching and/or supporting and enhancing the student learning experience. Mr. Hatziapostolou said: "My main aim in teaching is to engage students’ hearts and minds. Whether through innovative educational technologies or classroom teaching engagement techniques, I try to create an active, student-centered learning environment where learning happens out of interest, curiosity and enjoyment. Following a holistic approach to education whether in or out of the classroom, I place a strong emphasis on the development of the whole person in order to prepare students as much as possible for a very challenging world. I have been very fortunate to collaborate with exceptional colleagues in a Faculty that places quality learning and teaching as the highest priority, and especially within a department that greatly fosters innovation and fully supported my ideas." HR Seminar by Dr. Leslie Szamosi in Sofia

This was the topic discussed by Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Executive MBA programme, in the HR seminar he delivered in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Innovation Challenge 2013 Competition
The competition ‘Innovation Challenge 2013’ was officially launched in Sofia on the 13th of June 2013 with a special event that was opened with a business seminar by Mr. Stelios Kehaghias, Senior Lecturer at our Business Administration and Economics Department, themed “Innovate or Die”. MBA alumna receives ‘Edward Filene Credit Union Award UK 2012/13’
Congratulations to our MBA alumna, Ms Eleonora Zgonjanin Petrovic, General Manager of FULM Savings House in Skopje, who won Edward Filene Credit Union Awards UK 2012/13 — Overseas Development Educator of the Year from the European Union and Africa. The award ceremony took place at the “Marriott Hotel” in Liverpool — UK in 6 June 2013.

ICEIRD 2013
The 6th International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development ‘Regional Economic Resilience through Innovation and Enterprise’ Themed ‘Regional Economic Resilience through Innovation and Enterprise’ ,the 6th International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development (ICEIRD 2013) this year took take place with great success in Istanbul, Turkey, 20-21 June 2013. The event was co-organised by the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and our partner institution in Turkey, Sehir University. The event gathered decision makers, innovation experts and practitioners and generated fruitful discussion and exchange on the potential of entrepreneurship promotion and innovation to national and regional competitiveness. Interesting keynote speeches were delivered this year by Prof. Soumodip Sarkar, Dean, Doctoral School- Institute for Advanced Studies and Research (IIFA), Dr. Lars Eklund, Founder & Chairman of Scandinavian Competitiveness Group Mikel Landabaso, DG Regio Head of Unit of the thematic competence centre on smart and sustainable growth at the European Commission and Christopher Mondini, ICANN's Vice President, Business Engagement. The rich scientific programme of the event included influential presentations by highly-esteemed speakers and a series of interesting workshops. Staff members from the International Faculty participated in ICEIRD 2013 and presented interesting academic papers. The Faculty’s Vice Principal for Research, Innovation and External Relations, Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, was one of the three Conference Chairs. Also, Mr. Stelios Kehaghias, Senior Lecturer and Dr. Anastasios Karamanos, Lecturer at our Business Department acted as session moderators and also presented academic papers. The Director of our research centre, SEERC, Mr. Nikos Zaharis, the Director of Administration of our Faculty, Mr. Evangelos Ergen also participated in the conference and presented research papers. Finally, two of our postgraduate students, Ms. Abetare Domi and Vintileanu Cristina attended the conference and presented papers with their supervisors. The remarks of the closing panel discussion were of particular interest. Overall the conference was a success and received very positive feedback from the participants. 12th Students’ Spring Symposium
The 12th Students’ Spring Symposium took place successfully at the University of Sheffield International Faculty main campus in Thessaloniki, 24 May 2013. The event took place for the twelfth consecutive and was organised by students of all departments of the Faculty. In the frame of the symposium students presented very interesting papers on different scientific subjects and exchanged ideas. The event also included a workshop entitled ‘Teaching a robotic partner to dance’ propelling knowledge and innovation and attracting everyone’s attention. An interesting closing discussion themed ‘I have an idea’ gave the opportunity to both presenters and the audience to engage in a fruitful dialogue and draw interesting conclusions. The 12th Student Spring Symposium was sponsored by our research centre, the South East European Research Centre (SEERC), and the Greek ACM Student Chapter.

Seminar on Hotel and Hospitality Industry by Dr. Dimitrios Nikolaidis for our postgraduate students in Bucharest
On 27th May 2013 Dr Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department, delivered an interesting seminar entitled ‘The Hotel and Hospitality Industry: A need for new direction; A need for new philosophy’ at the partner institute of the International Faculty in Bucharest, the SNSPA University. Dr Nikolaidis focused his presentation on contemporary issues in hotel industry, emphasising how customer satisfaction can build strong customer relationships. He pointed out that strong customer relationships combined with innovative service management is a valuable competitive advantage for any company in this industry. The need for a new philosophy and new direction is vital for companies that wish to stand out according to Dr Nikolaidis. The event was well-attended by more than 60 students. The seminar took place in the frame of University of Sheffield programmes offered by the International Faculty in Bucharest.

Call for the "Boris Trajkovski" Scholarships for MBA students The Ministry of Education and Science and the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College are jointly offering full MBA scholarships for the Executive MBA programme running in Thessaloniki, Greece. The programme leads to the prestigious MBA degree of the University of Sheffield. The deadline for the application and submission of the required documents is 15 September 2013. NEW Call for Bachelors and Masters Scholarships The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College is additionally offering partial scholarships for its Bachelors and Masters programmes in Business Studies, Computer Science, and Psychology. All programmes lead to a prestigious degree of the University of Sheffield. The deadline for the application and submission of the required documents is 16 September 2013.

Guest lecture on Successful Event Organisation
An interesting guest lecture entitled “Steps to success-effective event organization” was delivered by Ms. Monika Nagy, Information Officer at Enterprise Europe Network, on 21st of May 2013. The lecture was addressed to the postgraduate students of the MA in Marketing, Advertising and PR and the MSc in Leisure & Tourism Management programmes. The students benefited from the key practical insights and the local and international examples provided by Ms. Nagy. In her presentation Ms. Nagy answered the question of what makes an event successful and how marketing tools can be used in the best way in order to have effective results.She also underpinned the importance of targeting the right audience which can significantly improve an event’s success. The seminar was delivered as part of the Festivals and Events Management unit and is in line with the International Faculty’s aim to bring academia and industry closer. The seminar was sponsored by the Federal of Industries of Northern Greece (FING) and the Enterprise Europe Network.

Robotics Competition by the Computer Science Department
On Friday, 17th May 2013 a Robotics Competition took place in the frame of the unit ‘Agents and Robotics’ of the 3rd level of the BSc in Computer Science programme. The competition was organised under the supervision of Dr. Kostas Dimopoulos , Lecturer at our Computer Science Department . During the 1-day competition that lasted from 10a.m. until 16.00p.m , the students, divided in teams of 4-5, had to design, build and program a small robot to compete in a "football"-type game. Each team used a lego mindstorms robot, and built their version of a ball collector that would throw the balls of its team’s colour to the side of the opposing team. The winning team was Mr Skafas, Mr Kalogeras, Mr Sidiropoulos, Ms Zisopoulou and Ms Kouri with their robot named "Ringo". The competition was a lot of fun for all participating students who had the opportunity to engage in productive team work and learn a lot about the fascinating world of robots.

Our student volunteers collect medicines for the Doctors of the World
For the third consecutive year student volunteers of CITY College’s ‘Sunrise Club’ run successfully a public collection of medicines in support of the Doctors of the World (DoW). The collection took place at the centre of Thessaloniki on Friday and Saturday, 24 and 25 of May 2013. The project was supervised by Ms. Panagiota Skoulariki , Lecturer at our Business Department . The public responded to our students’ call and supported the collection of medicines. Non-expired medicines, including sealed syrups and ointments, sealed and opened boxes of tablets and capsules, that were surplus to households in Thessaloniki, were collected. Instead of throwing them away causing pollution, people chose to donate these medicines to the Doctors of the World. Congratulations to Ms. Skoulariki and to our students on this initiative, showing that CITY College not only joins but also initiates and carries out charities.
