The University of York achieves Gold award for outstanding learning and teaching in the TEF 2023
In 2023, the University of York achieved its second consecutive Gold Teaching Excellence Framework award. The University of York has received the prestigious Gold award in the latest Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023) for its outstanding learning and teaching and student experience. Gold is the highest possible rating a university can achieve. The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is a national scheme run by the Office for Students, the independent regulator of higher education in England. Awards are decided by an independent panel of experts, focusing on areas that students care about the most: teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes from their studies. Following the Top 10 ranking for the quality the University of York received for its research in last year's REF, these TEF results underline academic excellence and research of the University of York. TEF 2023 panel statement said: “Course content and delivery inspire students to actively engage in and commit to their learning, and stretch students to develop knowledge and skills to their fullest potential.” “We achieve such high teaching standards because we’re motivated by our founding principles: the pursuit of academic excellence, the application of learning for social benefit, and equality of opportunity.” University of York TEF submission Find out why York received this exceptional award More information on TEF 2023

Real-life project for Sani/Ikos Group by our Business Students
The context: twelve students - split into two groups - had the opportunity to work on a real-life project for Sani/Ikos Group, an innovative and fast-growing group of luxury resorts in unique beachfront locations in the Mediterranean A rewarding learning experience: application of knowledge in the ‘real-world’ while working in close cooperation with business experts Project key objective: delivery of an Employee Recognition & Appreciation Scheme proposal Undergraduate students of the Business Administration and Economics Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, had the opportunity to get first-hand field experience by working on a real-life project with Sani/Ikos Group, an innovative and fast-growing group of luxury resorts in unique beachfront locations in the Mediterranean. This invaluable learning opportunity featured the precious guidance of Ms Lia Zampetoglou (Director of People Experience) and Ms Lenia Tzelou (Talent Experience Senior Manager), together with an unforgettable company visit to Sani Resort in Halkidiki! Our students successfully compiled and presented two comprehensive reports establishing Employee Recognition and Appreciation schemes for Sani/Ikos Group, intending to boost motivation, collaboration, and a performance-driven culture. Drawing on academic research about motivation, as well as resource-based and reinforcement theories, the reports outline upfront the key factors influencing employee motivation and interaction. Following an assessment of various successful recognition schemes applied by world-class competitors, the reports propose reflecting the company's objectives, vision, and values in the incentive program. An open, equitable, and impartial scheme is essential, including a variety of monetary, non-monetary, and experiential rewards. Additionally, our students elaborated on financial analysis, providing multiple cost options based on available funds and partnerships. Detailed communication plans emphasising open, reliable communication, and appropriate feedback mechanisms such as the 360-degree evaluation were also featured. Ultimately, our students concluded that, by incorporating a mixture of reward types and feedback mechanisms, Sani/Ikos Group can foster a culture of recognition and appreciation, improving organisational outcomes and fostering employee motivation and performance. The project was undertaken as part of the Practicum which represents a key component of all Bachelors programmes of the Business Department under the supervision of Dr Giovanni Serafini, Associate Professor. While working for their Practicum, business students learn new skills, work closely with accomplished professionals from a range of industry sectors, build up employability skills and competencies, and have one of the most rewarding learning experiences during their studies at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus. What is the Practicum? Business Practicums are supervised action learning projects designed to provide students with an opportunity to manage a project for an organization (“participating company-client”). They aim to successfully bridge academic knowledge and the development of professional skills and employability. They are team-based and normally delivered over a semester requiring students to devote an average of 150-200 hours in total (depending on the nature of the project). The student work is complemented by classroom-based teaching/mentoring. The precise nature of the project can vary enormously depending on both the nature and the needs of the organisation. Participating companies can be large corporations or small local businesses. The common denominator is a genuine need for help with a problem or appreciation of the added value of some independent research beyond the resources or capabilities of the participating company. This may be a general management problem, a marketing issue, a finance matter or any number of specific challenges.

Summer School 2023: An exciting learning experience
The 5th Summer School on the topic of Migration completed successfully at our main campus in Thessaloniki Participants from many European countries joined the course and got the most out of this unique learning experience The Summer School included a joint online talk jointly organised by CITY College Europe Campus and the University of York Another Summer School was successfully completed at our main campus in Thessaloniki, bringing together students from a number of European countries creating a truly international dimension. Built on the success of the previews years, Summer School 2023 on “Migration and the crises of solidarity” was organised by CITY College, University of York Europe Campus 23-30 June. Participating students came together to think about, discuss and reconsider practices of solidarity (or lack thereof) holistically from a number of perspectives and disciplines, such as sociological, political, policy perspectives and, crucially, from the humanitarian perspective. Discussions were carried out in various formats: workshops, lectures, experiential approaches and on-hands experiences both indoors and outdoors. Students got the most out of this exciting experience. Highlights of the Summer School included the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors, Dr Moskoff’s presentation on the current situation of unaccompanied minors in Greece and the current actions currently implemented, as well as Phevos Simeonidis’ presentation on human rights violations in Greece, an event jointly organised with the University of York which was live-streamed at York in the context of the York Refugee week. Another highlight was the round-table discussion on the perspectives of civil society organisations towards solidarity joined by Fani Galatsopoulou and Vasileios Georgakoudis (IOM), Irida Pandiri (Arsis), Apostolos Veizis (Intersos) and Nikolaos Rangos (Solidarity Now). We would like to wholeheartedly thank colleagues from the University of York, the University of Sheffield, the University of the Peloponnese and ELIAPEP, among others, for helping us understand the complex nature of migration and solidarity from an academic perspective. Their contributions allowed participants to approach the topic with rigour and explore new ways of engaging with solidarity and understanding its importance in the context of migration. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to civil society organisations HIGGS, Solidarity Now, Arsis, IOM and INTERSOS for sharing with us their invaluable experiences and knowledge. Special thanks also go to IOM and Arsis for engaging with summer school participants in outdoor activities with unaccompanied minors.
