Annual meeting of the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of the Computer Science Department
On Thursday, June 29, 2023, the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of the Computer Science Department reconvened for its annual meeting at the main campus building in Thessaloniki, Greece. Comprised of 9 esteemed experts in the ICT industry, the Board convenes once a year, and this gathering marked the first meeting since the lifting of the Covid-19 crisis restrictions. The meeting was highly productive, with a range of intriguing and challenging topics discussed at length. The agenda primarily focused on exploring the latest trends and advancements in the IT field, with the aim of identifying future directions and incorporating them into our academic programs. Proposals were presented to enhance our teaching and learning methodologies, taking into account market changes and the current and future demands of the IT industry. Additionally, the meeting delved into the identification of key attributes, personal characteristics, and both soft and hard skills necessary for a successful career in the field. The Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of the Computer Science Department at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus serves as a vital bridge for communication and collaboration with the ICT industry in southeastern Europe. One of the primary goals of the Computer Science department is to produce highly skilled graduates, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, who are well-prepared for successful careers. The IAB plays a crucial role by providing advice and guidance to the department on educational, professional, and research matters, complementing the feedback received from scientific societies, quality assurance agencies, and students. The IAB establishes a direct connection between the department and local industry representatives, resulting in mutual benefits for both parties. The valuable insights and guidance provided by the Industrial Advisory Board complement the feedback received by the faculty from scientific societies, quality assurance agencies, and students on educational, professional, and research matters. Together, they contribute to the continuous improvement and development of our department. Online Talk: Whose 'truth'? Exposing human rights abuses in Greece
Jointly organised by CITY College Europe Campus and the University of York Whose 'truth'? Exposing human rights abuses in Greece Monday, 26 June 2023 3:00pm - 4:00pm (EEST) Online Speaker: Phevos Simeonidis Forensic and OSINT Researcher Overview: This lecture dives into the concept of "truth", as it's being deployed or contested when it comes to exposing human rights abuses in Greece. Using a multidisciplinary approach from the humanities, it explores power dynamics, storytelling, and how truth is understood in relation to human rights violations in the EU borders and beyond. Using Greece as a case study, the lecture delves into the recent historical and political contexts that shaped these abuses over time, and the activist/media responses. The lecture also explores the different narratives that emerge and the power struggles between victims, perpetrators, and society. while also discussing the roles of human rights organizations, media, and grassroots movements in shedding light on abuses and seeking justice. About the speaker: Phevos Simeonidis is an OSINT & audiovisual forensics researcher and an archivist. He is an MA graduate from the Centre for Research Architecture, a researcher and investigative partner of OmniaTv and The Manifold, and the former director and co-founder of Disinfaux Collective in Athens, Greece. As of late 2023 he is also a PhD candidate at Durham University, SGIA. He is a frequent collaborator of -among others- Forensic Architecture, Lighthouse Reports, with his work focusing on far/alt-right narrative creation and performativity online, militarized border regimes and surveillance, and human rights violations in the external borders of the EU. Workshop on ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education’ by Dr Savvidou and Dr Tatsioka
An interactive and informative workshop took place on ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education’ in the context of the Student Spring Symposium 2023. Dr Suzie Savvidou, Head of the Psychology Department, and Dr Zoi Tatsioka, Head of the Humanities Department, defined key concepts of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), such as intercultural competence, allyship, inclusive language, unconscious bias, microaggressions, and intersectionality, among others, and discussed various ways through which EDI can be promoted in academia. CITY College students and staff also participated in the discussion and offered interesting insights into the topic as well as useful feedback.

Enterprise Works in Thessaloniki
The first international visit of Enterprise Works, the entrepreneurial hub of the University of York Promoting entrepreneurship, research and innovation Prof. Kiran Trehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships and Engagement) introduces ‘Enterprise Works International’ in Thessaloniki Enterprise Works representatives were introduced to the SEE region and local business community and participated in meetings and networking activities CITY College, University of York Europe Campus host in Thessaloniki ‘Enterprise Works’ (EW) of the University of York - a new business hub that helps businesses to grow and supports entrepreneurial activity. During this three day visit, Prof. Kiran Trehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships and Engagement), Sam Gardner, Director of Enterprise Works and Jayne Blizzard, Project Officer together with a group of entrepreneurs from the UK, Mr James Fearnley, CEO at Nature’s Laboratory Ltd, Ms Julie Macey-Hewitt, Head of Operations, TestCard.com and Mr. Ramanan Mylvaganam, Director, Asclepius Healthcare Ltd, were introduced to the SEE region and local business community, engaged in meetings and networking activities with leading businesses in their sector and participated in meetings at the Thessaloniki Innovation Zone. CITY College representatives, Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Dr Nikolaos Tsorakidis and Mr Nikos Zaharis also participated in EW activities in Thessaloniki. In this context, an event was held in the Innovation Zone in which Professor Kiran Trehan presented 'Enterprise Works International' which promotes international collaborations and networking and spoke about the immediate plans regarding the interconnection of entrepreneurship with the academic community at an international level. EW delegates also had the opportunity to attend the European Business Angels Network Congress 2023 (EBAN). Prof. Trehan participated as speaker which was moderated by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis Co-Founder of the Hellenic Business Angels Network (HeBAN) while Sam Garner participated in a panel discussion. Student Spring Symposium 2023
A great event for students by students Celebrating academic research across CITY College Europe Campus 21 student presentations, 49 presenters, 180 attendees, 1 amazing workshop, 3 best presentation awards A successful event entirely organised by CITY College students On 10 & 11 May 2023 CITY College, University of York Europe Campus successfully held the Student Spring Symposium 2023 (SSS23) at its main campus in Thessaloniki aiming at enhancing student research and showcasing remarkable research projects. The event featured 21 captivating presentations covering a wide range of topics delivered by 49 talented students, from diverse fields of study, all ready to showcase through presentations their passion, talent and knowledge. About 180 enthusiastic students from all departments attended the event and celebrated students’ achievements.SSS23 truly demonstrated the immense talent within CITY College’s student community. Three exceptional presentations won Best Presentation Awards. Congratulations to talented winners namely, Tron Baraku, Bindi Pireva both from the Computer Science Department and Kerasoula Papadopoulou from Psychology Department. Students demonstrated extraordinary skills, creativity and a deep understanding of their topic. In the context of the Symposium an interactive and informative workshop took place last week on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education. Dr Suzie Savvidou, Head of the Psychology Department, and Dr Zoi Tatsioka, Head of the Humanities Department defined key concepts of equality, diversion and inclusion (EDI), such as intercultural competence, allyship, inclusive language, unconscious bias, microaggressions, and intersectionality, among others, and discussed various ways through which EDI can be promoted in academia. CITY College students and staff also participated in the discussion and offered interesting insights into the topic as well as useful feedback. Dr Kalliopi Megari speaks at the 31st Pan-Hellenic Congress of Psychiatry
Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of the postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology at our Psychology Department, joined distinguished speakers in the 31st Pan-Hellenic Congress of Psychiatry that took place in Rhodes. Dr Megari successfully presented the topic ‘Neuropsychological and neurocognitive rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients’ and shared valuable insights with the audience.
