This year CITY College is going to organise three events by Professor Ana Vivas, Professor in Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology and Departmental Research Director at our Psychology Department, Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of our postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology and Dr Kalliopi Pasmatzi, Assistant Professor at our Humanities Department. A Turbulent Entanglement: German-Greek relations Saturday 3 June 2023 1:30pm - 2:30pm (EEST) King's Manor, Exhibition Square York, UK (In-person only) Speakers: Dr Kalliopi Pasmatzi Assistant Professor, Humanities Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus David Charlston Independent researcher, teacher, translator and co-editor of New Voices in Translation Studies Overview: The debt crisis saw Venus of Milos flipping off Europe and Berlin’s Victory Column holding a swastika. How indicative are such ephemeral signs of German-Greek relations? Are German-Greek relations a story of counter-accusations? Despite the recent portrayal of Greece as Europe’s crisis-ridden ‘Other’, German-Greek relations have a long-standing history, with Philhellenism witnessing the import of ancient Greek thought into Germany. Beyond antiquity, an examination of their current cross-cultural exchanges weaves a narrative of German-Greek relations as one of mutually beneficial exchange. This intriguing talk examines the circulation of Modern Greek literature in Germany and how specific publishers enact German-Greek cultural relations. Join us for unique insights into the complex encounters of these two cultures. Join the event A New Perspective on Learning Thursday 8 June 11:00am - 12:00pm (EEST) Online Speaker: Professor Ana Vivas Professor in Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology Departmental Research Director Psychology Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus Overview: We have known for a long time that positive reinforcement improves learning, and most parents use it on a daily basis to motivate children to learn. What most of us don’t know is that the way reinforcement is administered after a correct response makes a big difference. Cognitive neuroscientist Ana B. Vivas will discuss how a fascinating discovery in animals from the 1970s has been applied to children and adults with various cognitive impairments, and what innovative digital applications are currently being developed to positively impact people’s everyday lives. This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. Join the event Brain and Heart: The dynamic connection Friday 9 June 11:00am - 12:00pm (EEST) Online Speaker: Dr Kalliopi Megari Lecturer and Programme Lead of postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology Psychology Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus Overview: Is there a connection between the heart and the brain? Which is the source of emotions? For example, when we’re in love or when we feel our heart break out of sadness, which organ handles this? Are all emotions located in the brain or in the heart? Clinical neuropsychologist Kalliopi Megari provides intriguing insights into the dynamic relationship and strong connection between the heart and the brain, showing how lifestyle interventions can help fight cardiovascular and neurological diseases. This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. Join the event Visit York Festival of Ideas
