Prof. Ketikidis appointed Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Thessaloniki Innovation Zone

Congratulations to our Vice President for Research & Innovation, Professor Panayiotis Ketikidis, on his recent appointment as Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Thessaloniki Innovation Zone (TIZ). The Thessaloniki Innovation Zone fosters scientific, technological, and business development with emphasis on purposes of public interest, and has an important role in transforming Thessaloniki into an international hub for knowledge and knowledge-based entrepreneurship. Our Vice President's appointment is a well-deserved recognition of his excellent and consistent academic and professional work in these areas throughout his career and his unwavering dedication and leadership to inspire and help shape such an environment in Greece and internationally. Prof. Ketikidis has always been highly involved in local and international organisations and initiatives that promote entrepreneurship, innovation and research. In addition to being the President of our research centre, the South East Europe Research Centre (SEERC), Prof. Ketikidis is also President and founder of the Triple Helix Association Chapter of Greece (THA Greece), Honorary Member of the Board of the Greek Exporters Association (SEVE), and Member of the Education, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Committee of the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce. Prof. Ketikidis commented: “I am very excited to start this new journey, which will be based on synergies collaboration and extroversion, involving all stakeholders of our ecosystem. Καθηγήτρια Σχολικής Ψυχολογίας Τμήμα Ψυχολογίας, ΑΠΘ Χρήστος Στεργιάδης Διδακτορικός Φοιτητής στις Εφαρμοσμένες Νευροεπιστήμες, Τμήμα Φυσικής, Μηχανικής και Τεχνολογίας, Πανεπιστήμιο του York   Δήλωση συμμετοχής   Σχετικα με την εκδήλωση Η Διαταραχή Ελλειμματικής Προσοχής και Υπερκινητικότητας (ΔΕΠΥ) είναι μια από τις συχνότερες νευροβιολογικές διαταραχές της παιδικής ηλικίας, η οποία συνεχίζεται, κατά ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό, και στην ενήλικη ζωή. Σκοπός της παρούσας εκδήλωσης είναι να ενημερώσει το ευρύ κοινό γύρω από την ΔΕΠΥ και να δείξει την επίδρασή της στην καθημερινότητα των ατόμων με ΔΕΠΥ και στο οικογενειακό τους περιβάλλον.  Θα πραγματοποιηθεί η παρουσίαση μιας πρωτοποριακής και αποτελεσματικής θεραπευτικής μεθόδου για τη ΔΕΠΥ, που ονομάζεται νευροανάδραση. An exciting Ski Trip to Bansko by CITY's Students Union (CSU)

Our students set off for Bansko, one of Bulgaria's most popular #ski resorts, right after the examination period to enjoy a short holiday in the mountains. The trip was organised by the CSU 11-13 February 2023. Students who participated in the trip enjoyed skiing, snowboarding and so much more! "We are grateful to have had the chance to make memories alongside every single student who made this trip more than special, and we cherish the friendships we've made along the way." Successful online event for the Hotel Industry by CITY College Europe Campus

A third successful virtual event on tourism by our Business Administration & Economics Department. This year the event was focused on the Hotel Industry Experienced and well-recognised professionals shared their views and expertise The two challenges in the Hospitality sector were throughout discussed: sustainable profitability and human resources management Watch the event on our Youtube Channel The online event for the Hotel Industry was held with great success and ended with useful conclusions and suggestions by the invited speakers. The event organised was by the Business Administration and Economics Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus on 14 February 2023. The event, themed 'Hotels: Sustainable profitability and human resource management', was opened by Ms. Aggeliki Papakonstantinou, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department of CITY College who warmly welcomed invited speakers and guests. Experienced and well-recognised professionals participated as speakers in the event, shared their valuable insights and perspectives on the topic, namely, Alkis Sotiriou, Managing Director, Makedonia Palace-Porto Carras, Panos Almyrantis, General Manager Grand Hyatt Athens & President European Hotel Managers Association (EHMA), Dimitris Perrakis, General Manager of Grecotel Cape Sounio, Olga Tsapanidou, General Manager Blue Bay Hotel, Nassos Fanos, Independent Legal Services Professional - GDPR and Hotel Contract Specialist, Kalliopi Karantemiri, Human Resources Director, K.BADOUVAS Group of Companies and Sotiris Milonas, Civil Engineer, ΜΒΑ, Sustainability Health & Safety Risk Auditor. The main topics discussed during the event were sustainable profitability and human resources management in hotel industry, which represent the two critical challenges that are interconnected and require careful management. Specifically, as the speakers mentioned in their presentations, hotels are highly dependent on natural resources and therefore produce a significant amount of waste. To achieve sustainable profitability, hotels must prioritise resource efficiency, reduce waste and adopt environmentally friendly practices that can help reduce their environmental footprint. This can include investing in energy efficient technologies, using renewable energy sources and implementing waste management strategies. However, all guest speakers highlighted that sustainable profitability cannot be achieved without the support and commitment of the hotel workforce. Human resources management plays a critical role in creating a culture of sustainability and driving change within the organisation. One of the important challenges highlighted during the event is that the alarmingly high staff turnover rate in hotels that represents a limiting factor affecting the quality of services provided. Hotels must implement strategies that prioritise employee engagement, recognise and reward employee achievements, and create opportunities for growth and career advancement. Investment in employee training and development is also necessary to ensure that employees have the necessary skills to provide high-quality services and experiences to customers. Some other interesting suggestions that emerged from the event are the need for proper infrastructure to achieve sustainability, the need of adequate workforce to create competitive advantage, proper collaboration between hotel managers and entrepreneurs, financial support of work and not unemployment, better contracts and increasing direct bookings rather than reducing operating costs. As was characteristically mentioned at the event "The new term "anthropocracy" is the one that will provide the solution to the hotel industry....the investment in people and human resources." The event was moderated by Dr Giovanni Oscar Serafini, Associate Professor, και Dr Lemonia Papadopoulou - Kelidou, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, who asked key questions and facilitated the discussion between the speakers. Η ελπίδα αλλάζει από άνθρωπο σε άνθρωπο, διότι ο καθένας ελπίζει με διαφορετικό βαθμό. Είναι μια θετική κινητήρια δύναμη η οποία βασίζεται σε μια αίσθηση επιτυχίας, σε στοχοθετημένες ενέργειες και στον σχεδιασμό για την επίτευξη αυτών των στόχων. MENTBEST: New funded research project on mental health

Protecting mental health in times of change   We are happy to announce ‘MENTBEST’, a new important research project on mental health funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme that was awarded to the Psychology Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus and its research centre, the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC). Our team will be led by Prof. Ana Vivas, Professor and Departmental Research Director at our Psychology Department and Professor Lina Gega, Professor of Mental Health at York Medical School and Inaugural Director of the Institute of Mental Health Research at the University of York. MENTBEST aims at mitigating the negative impacts of transformation and seizing new opportunities: Global trends such as war, economic crisis, climate change, migration, digitalisation, pandemics, ageing and demographic change, place increasing stress and pressure on European societies to adapt to fast-changing situations. These stressors can trigger mental health problems for significant parts of the population. These problems include both non-clinical aspects (mental distress, sub-diagnostic depressive symptoms, reduced quality of life and well-being, “burnout”, anxiety syndromes) and clinical aspects (mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders according to ICD-10, increased suicide risk). Particular vulnerable groups within the general population (e.g., migrants/refugees, younger people, older people, long-term unemployed, those with mental disorders) are especially at risk of finding themselves disadvantaged by dramatic societal change, of experiencing particular stressors, and of suffering (further) negative impacts on their wellbeing, including mental health. MENTBEST will develop, implement, validate and evaluate a Comprehensive Multifaceted Community-based Intervention (“COMBINA”), based on the proven EAAD intervention programme, but adapted and broadened for the specific needs of the vulnerable groups (above), and for non-clinical mental health challenges as outlined above, including sub-diagnostic depressive and anxiety symptoms, burnout and mental distress, as associated with dramatic societal change. COMBINA will be implemented in five model regions in five different European countries, which vary greatly in terms of geography, socioeconomic conditions, and mental health ecosystem (Ireland, Spain, Albania, Estonia, Greece) and be evaluated with a special focus on the vulnerable groups within the model regions. An innovative addition is the RCT of app-based self-monitoring and self-management technologies for mental health, which use AI and n=1 longitudinal statistics to create individualised predictive models and provide users preventive and self-management support.
