Successful event by CITY College and Y.M.C.A on Violence against Women
An event organised on the occasion of the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ (25 November) On Monday 21 November CITY College, University of York Europe Campus in collaboration with YMCA successfully organised an event on domestic violence on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November). Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology at Psychology Department of CITY College, presented interesting but at the same time particularly worrying statistics and data. Dr. Megari discussed the topic 'Domestic violence and mental health: Data from the international and Greek area' referring first to the different forms of violence, pointing out how important it is to recognise it: “"Domestic violence is any kind of physical, sexual or psychological violent behaviour towards the victim." During her presentation she highlighted that according to the Council of Europe, domestic violence is the main cause of death and disability for women aged 16-44 and causes more deaths than cancer, traffic accidents and war, while she did not fail to mention that children are also victims of violence against women as they usually are exposed to domestic violence. At the closing of the event, Dr. Megari referred to the ways in which violence against women can be dealt with, urging women to speak up and seek help while stressing that there should be zero tolerance for violence. The event concluded a vivid discussion with the audience as Dr. Megari accepted questions and shared her views on the topic. Representatives from CITY College and Y.M.C.A. The event took place within the frame of the social action of CITY College and Y.M.C.A. and was supported by Diotima. View all events

Masterclass by Dr Serafini on Creating a future-ready leadership pipeline A strategic HRM approach at HR WEEK 2022
Monday 21 November 2022 the HR Week 2022 virtual conference (which CITY College, University of York Europe Campus is supporting as academic sponsor) kicked off and saw Dr Giovanni Oscar Serafini contributing insights on future-ready leadership. While this is a must for any organisation, the development of top talent is an ongoing challenge. Although staggering amounts are spent to improve the pipeline of future-ready leadership, still the return on training investment (ROI-Training) is rather poor. This masterclass reviewed the key reasons behind the frequent training failure to deliver real and lasting impact. These range from participant-related to the training program itself, and the work environment. Namely, research has identified social support (by the supervisor, colleagues, and subordinates) as being the most crucial determinant toward high motivation to transfer what learned in training sessions to the workplace. Furthermore, while HRM needs to offer a strategic solution by enabling a favorable context, succession planning and leadership development require also the commitment at the very top of organisations. This masterclass concluded by highlighting that, as companies with a future-ready workforce outperform their competitors, they require talented, future-ready leaders.

CITY College supports ‘Boroume – saving food, saving lives’ charity organisation
With the initiative of our Business Administration and Economics Department, CITY College adopted a farmers market in Thessaloniki to help reduce food waste, save leftover food Many student volunteers have joined the initiative offering valuable help every Friday We are happy to announce that the Business Administration and Economics Department has initiated a collaboration with the charity organisation ‘Boroume – saving food, saving lives’ by ‘adopting’ a farmers’ market in Thessaloniki to help reduce food waste, save leftover food and offer it to charitable organisations. More specifically, students and staff volunteers support the action “Boroume at the farmers market”. The first groups of volunteers visited the Petrou Syndika farmers’ market on Friday 11 and 18 November accompanied by Dr Alexnadra Prodromidou and Dr Nikos Tsorakidis respectively and helped the collection of fruits and vegetables donated by vendors from the market stands and their distribution to those in need. Indicatively, the first time our students joined the cause they collected 339 kilos of fruits and vegetables and a crate with fish. These amounts produce 1.406 meals. The experience was very rewarding! Students and staff from CITY College’s community will be visiting the market in Petrou Syndika every Friday. CITY College is both happy and proud to support ‘Boroume’ and its cause to strengthen solidarity, reduce food waste and donate food to people who are experiencing acute food insecurity. Guest lecture on 'Teams: Building Trust and Managing Conflict & Change'
On Tuesday 15 November 2022, second-year undergraduate students of the Business Administration & Economics Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus had the extraordinary opportunity to attend a guest lecture by Mr Naoum Liotas (Gestalt Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Business Coach based in London, UK). Same as last year, he joined us live from London (UK) to discuss building trust and managing conflict and change in teams, as part of the Organisational Behaviour module led by Dr Giovanni Serafini. A particular highlight of this fascinating presentation was the role of trust, which represents the glue that keeps teams together. Thus, trust is co-created, negotiated between everyone involved, and helps teams be effective. Most importantly, trust creates psychological safety, whereby it's all right to question someone if this is for the best of an organisation. In conclusion, as Mr Liotas stressed, in the current VUCA context change is incessantly top-down and bottom-up, yet it has to be emergent, relational, and happening through dialogue. It was an outstanding learning experience bringing key insights on OB and business best practices to classes at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus.
