Celebrating another successful cohort of students of the Public Engagement Scheme
We are very glad to announce that the second cohort of students who have been attending “English classes for teenagers” in the framework of the Public Engagement Scheme at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, has successfully finished its 3-year programme by participating in the B2 English language exams. In this framework, the final-year students of the BA in English Language, Linguistics and Literature, offered by the Humanities Department, have conducted their teaching practice under the supervision of Dr Vicky Papachristou, Assistant Professor at the Department. Although it has been a challenging period for both students and the numerous teachers who have taught in this programme given the COVID-19 pandemic and all the changes it has brought about, still both parties have managed to overcome the adversities with persistence, eagerness to learn and teach, collaboration and professionalism. We would like to congratulate all the students who participated in this programme and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours. Here are some students’ testimonials about their experience: DT: In these three years, I learned a lot of things and I surely became better at English. Now I can easily communicate with people from foreign countries. I liked this experience a lot, the teachers were very friendly and lovable and taught us a lot of things. Expect for learning English, we also spent a lot of time doing group work and I really liked collaborating with my classmates. It was a beautiful experience and personally I had a lot of fun in these three years. SR: I have been at CITY College for 3 years and I haven’t realized that 3 years have passed, but all I have to say is that I have learned many things about the English language. Moreover, I liked that we had many different young teachers and not only Greeks ones but also foreigners from other countries which was very interesting. I have improved my English because of the teachers. I'll miss every moment about CITY College and everything that we have been through and I'm so grateful for this experience. VM: I haven't realized it yet that these three years have passed so quickly. I still remember the first day I entered CITY College and I saw these smiley faces staring at me and welcoming me in the best way I could ever imagine. These three years I had a great time and I can only say good things for sure. I’m so blessed and grateful that l had the opportunity to be in this amazing college and learn so many things from those amazing people.

Guest lecture on: 'HR policies and practices application in a cutting edge organisation: the case of Embryolab Fertility Clinic'
On 26 May 2022, students of the Business Administration & Economics Department and the Executive MBA programme of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus had the extraordinary opportunity to attend a guest lecture in the Auditorium by Dr Dimitrios Nikolaidis, CEO at Embryolab Fertility Clinic, Thessaloniki (Greece), on 'HR policies and practices application in a cutting edge organisation: the case of Embryolab Fertility Clinic'. The eager audience followed this insightful event both in-person and online as part of the HR Policies and Practices unit led by Dr Giovanni Serafini within the MSc in Management (Human Resource Management) study program. Thanks to his rich experience both in business and academia, Dr Nikolaidis delivered a highly engaging presentation that stressed the importance of connecting HR policies and practices to organisational values and vision. As he stressed, trust and respect in the workplace are key to enabling human resources to offer added value to the organisation. The implications to HRM are multifaceted: while there is the need to secure an ongoing articulate process involving employee recruitment and selection, the HR function has to provide training, development, and rewards while fostering work in teams. Ultimately, the latter can be attained through a leadership fully engaged in the shared vision, values, and aims, and committed to achieving organisational goals while helping employees attain theirs. The debate that followed addressed key issues such as reasons for employee turnover, career development, managing organisational change while reducing the fear factor, and why vision and values are becoming more and more important in building a company culture today. It was an outstanding learning experience bringing a key industry voice to classes at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus.

Clinical Psychology Webinar: 'Behavioural activation for depression'
WATCH NOW: "Behavioural Activation for Depression" Thursday, 2 June 2022 18.00 EEST Speaker: Dr Lina Gega Professor of Mental Health, University of York Watch the event! Join and share! Overview: This talk will introduce you to the key principles and strategies of behavioural activation (BA), along with its evidence base as a brief psychological therapy for depression. Persistently low mood or irritability, loss of interest or pleasure in day-to-day life, lack of energy and motivation, avoidance and withdrawal are some common symptoms of depression. BA is based on the key principle that enjoyable, purposeful and rewarding activities can lift our mood, energise us, reconnect us with people and things that matter, and stimulate our interest and pleasure in day-to-day life, thereby combating depression. In this talk, we will start by looking at the nature of depression and the relationship between depression (how we feel) and activity (what we do - or avoid doing – in response to how we feel). We will understand how BA works and how it can be applied, with the help of fictional case examples that reflect typical experiences of depression. Finally, we will get an insight into the evidence about the clinical and cost-effectiveness of BA through published trials and reviews. The University of York, whose Europe Campus is CITY College, is a renowned institution in the study and application of BA, having carried out some of the seminal research and largest trials in the field. Join us and discover how behavioural activation can transform our efforts to combat depression. An extra learning resource for Behavioural Activation (BA) As a complementary resource to this talk, you can access a free online course, developed by the University of York, as an introduction to BA.
