10th Strategic People Management Workshop on Remote Work
The 10th Strategic People Management Workshop at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus took place on Wednesday 08 September. This in-person event centred on remote work, its implications, and best practices. After the opening presentations by Professor Leslie Szamosi, Director of the Pan-European Executive MBA and Professor of Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour, and Dr Giovanni Oscar Serafini, Assistant Professor in Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour, Ms Viktorija Damchevska, Head of People Operations at GrabIT, North Macedonia, shared online amazing insights on the application of remote work solutions. The floor was then opened to Executive MBA students of CITY College for a multifaceted discussion leading, among others, to the following main conclusions: (1) Organisations need to find the practices that work for them. It is a trial and error process until the optimal solution is found for the specific organisational context/case. (2) Empathy of managers is paramount: being 'aware' is key here in order to be compassionate and understand remote workers. (3) The peculiarity of remote work demands trust, transparency, and clarity of rules. With this backdrop, flexibility, giving choices, and decentralisation offer nimbleness to organisational structure and processes. Ultimately, organisations thus attain agile cultures thanks to agile management. The event took place in the context of the Annual Study Week of our Executive MBA programme and was attended by Executive MBA students from all 8 countries where the programme runs.
