Successful Online Conference on 'Τhe driving forces of Hospitality' by the Business Department
A successful online event endorsed by UNWTO and INSETE Insightful keynote speeches by Ms Natalia Bayona, Director of Innovation, Education and Investments at World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Mr Panagiotis Almyrantis, Hotel General Manager Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas - Vice President European Hotel Managers Association and Prof Andreas Papatheodorou, Professor/Director at the University of the Aegean, Greece Event speakers highlight the need for focus on innovation, education and technology to meet contemporary challenges in the industry of Tourism of Hospitality The online conference "The driving forces of Hospitality: Technology, Innovation and Education" was successfully organised and executed by Dr Lenia Papadopoulou-Kelidou and Dr Giovanni Serafini of the Business Administration and Economics Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, with the endorsement of UNWTO and INSETE. This open conference offered students, professionals, and educators the opportunity to get valuable insights from leading industry experts and academics in the field of tourism and hospitality in Greece. First, Ms Natalia Bayona, Director of Innovation, Education and Investments at World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) opened the event with a video on the road towards a more conscious, innovative, and educated tourism sector. In her very insightful presentations, Ms Bayona emphasized that the challenges in the field of tourism have not changed with the pandemic. Rather, the pandemic accelerated the need to meet these challenges, which are: innovation, education, investments, value-added jobs, and sustainability. To address them successfully, there is the need for collaboration between governments, start-ups, academics, and investors. Next, the event featured two distinct panels which focussed on the role of technology and innovation in hospitality, and the role of education in tourism, respectively. The participants to the first panel were: Mr Panagiotis Almyrantis, Hotel General Manager Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas - Vice President European Hotel Managers Association Mr Dimitris Perrakis, Area Operations Manager at Atlantica Hotels & Resorts Mr Kyros Asfis, Managing Director at Nea Mesa Hotel & Tourism Digital Marketing Agency Mr Nassos Fanos, Independent Legal Services Professional - GDPR and Hotel Contract Specialist Following Mr Almyrantis' initial presentation about a hotel's General Manager challenges and opportunities, the debate addressed the fact that many hoteliers are reluctant to invest in technological means claiming that they are too expensive or apply to large hotel operations. Instead, cost must not be feared if one considers the ROI (Return on Investment) and the ROAS (Return on Ad Spend). Thus, there is the need to approach things differently: demystification is the key here, technology can be applied correctly and effectively! However, as Mr Perrakis stressed, technology is just a tool and human resources are essential towards attaining the benefits technology can offer. With the right mentality, organisational culture, and training of the workforce, technology can be successfully applied in hotel operations of any size. Specifically, digital marketing can dramatically increase a hotel's sales and bookings. However, as Mr Asfis warned, there is the need to recognise the need to modernise the sales mix and focus on embracing the trend of digital marketing from content-based to content-driven and experiential. Lastly, Mr Fanos overviewed aspects related to GDPR compliance and the possibility for hoteliers to renegotiate abusive contract terms based on latest developments in the EU legal framework. Next, the conference addressed the role of education in tourism with the following panel: Prof Andreas Papatheodorou, Professor/Director at the University of the Aegean, Greece Mr Yiorgos Koutsokostas, Director of Learning and Development at INSETE Ms Vania Kamtsiou, Senior Trainer & Founder at Welcome Global The works of the panel were opened by Prof Papatheodorou who delivered a thorough presentation on the role of post-secondary education in tourism and hospitality. Among others, Prof Papatheodorou illustrated the skills cultivated in post-secondary education in Greece and discussed the extent to which graduates are ready to work in the field of hospitality. Next, Mr Koutsokostas examined what skills INSETE research identifies as been needed by hotel businesses nowadays and overviewed the various educational programs and initiatives INSETE offers to address skill gaps in the hotel industry. Then, Ms Kamtsiou's extensive experience as trainer was instrumental in examining challenges affecting the education of hotel professionals, their attitude towards training as well as graduate students joining the hotel industry. Namely, Ms Kamtsiou stressed that values and notions that are an integral part of hospitality and often define hospitality itself, such as respect, courtesy, smile, and good mood can be taught. However, their application by employees requires not only training, but also the inspiring behaviour of supervisors and managers who need to embody these values and notions of hospitality. To this end, reference was made to the criticality of internal training, which is a function that can be enacted in a formal way in hospitality concerns regardless of size. While the panel recognised that there is indeed the need to bridge education and the requirements of the hotel industry, as an example in this direction it was mentioned that at City College, University of York Europe Campus students are given the opportunity during their studies for a semester to work with a company that assigns them a specific task. In this way, the so-called 'Practicum' program aims to bridge theory with market practices by making students work closely with hospitality and tourism managers. The conference concluded that the success of the hospitality and tourism system overall in these challenging times is in the hands of professionals recognising that responsibility is part of their job, as reminded by Ms Bayona. Within this perspective, education plays a cardinal role by urging professionals to reassess how they relate with knowledge. In fact, the process of knowledge goes through the stages of studying, learning, relearning, and unlearning to be able to learn the new. Watch the event:

The English Studies Department Learns How to Build Narratives and Structure Stories
Where would we be without stories? We live life, reflect on it, escape from it, engage with it through narratives…oral, written, audiovisual as well as digital. On Wednesday, 12th May 2021, the English Studies Department’s last spring semester Personal and Professional Development seminar focused on exactly that. Dr Richard Steadman-Jones, Senior Lecturer of the School of English at the University of Sheffield, delivered an intriguing presentation titled: “Building Digital Narratives: Stories and Structures” that raised awareness towards yet another way to engage with and create narratives, namely hypertexts. What are hypertexts, one might ask? Think of Wikipedia! Hypertexts consist of chunks of text that are linked together in complex ways that can result in reading them in a different order, potentially resulting in a different story, what some may call a “branching narrative.” Some similar examples are text-based games such as Zork or an audiovisual example is from the BBC TV series Black Mirror, specifically the Bandersnatch episode. The big question is if one can tell a story utilizing this type of structure. The answer is, of course! Dr Steadman-Jones shared various student produced hypertexts as examples and brought other such texts to our attention, such as the Choose your own Adventure print book series. As Dr Steadman-Jones informs, hypertext stories can adopt different types of structures that lead to different story and reading experiences. There is the linear structure that resembles how we would read a print novel or short story. There is the hierarchical structure that provides us with options that branch off the landing or home page of the story, and what one chooses determines the progress of the plot. In some cases, we may come across a combination of linear and hierarchical structures. Of course, an element of randomness may be added such as rolling a dice to determine a choice. There are also the flat or weblike structures where the chunks of text of linked in a dense network where all chunks are or can be interrelated and lead into and away from each other in very intriguing and complex ways. An example Dr Steadman-Jones brought forth was Edward Falco’s Charmin’ Cleary. Dr Steadman-Jones further noted how even minute details such as colors, fonts, italics can be significant hints or clues that can reveal information about characters, setting or the plot. Depending on what one may choose, the focalization or point-of-view of the story may change, thus giving another character’s version of the events. The links in hypertexts carry heavy weight as they guide the reader, provide routes one can follow, but they can also subvert expectations. Links can be abstract items thus again pointing at something random or arbitrary in terms of path choice. Then again, they may be invisible thus prompting kinesthetic engagement with the text by having to explore our screen to find the link. Additionally, the order of the information is quite important as the same information but in different order can infer different stories. Or better yet, one text (and depending on the order and structure one adopts) can lead to endless stories. Dr Steadman-Jones also demonstrated a very helpful, free, and accessible tool one can use to create hypertext narratives. Twine can be downloaded to one’s computer or used online. It enables one to create chunks of text, establish links, insert images, and create a simple linear hypertext or have a go at something more complex. AI Dungeon is a similar type of tool. All in all, the area of digital narratives and hypertexts is rich as it brings together narrative, digital media, and technology. It combines storytelling, software tools and coding. It can be inspired by areas such as gaming either at a cognitive level, material level, physical level or even be taken into account when considering various debates such as the narratology versus ludology debate or current practices, such as transmedia storytelling. What is more, it reveals new author/creator storytelling practices, new reading experiences and well as different digital literacy skills. For those interested in areas such as linguistics, literature, media, this is not an area to be overlooked!

Seminar on Rejection by the Psychology Department
Friday, 14 May 2021 Online Registration Form Use your CITY email account Join the event! Seminar Overview Why does hearing “no” hurt so much? Who hasn’t been rejected? Fear of rejection is universal and a very common experience. MRI machines depicted that rejection activates the same areas of our brain as physical pain, which dates back to the first humans’ “herd” mentality. Long-lasting rejection has deep psychological effects and we all struggle to keep it out of our realm of experience. Taking back control of our life requires some social skills that would diminish our zero tolerance for rejection. By bolstering our self-worth or by strengthening our social connections we could use rejection to fuel our passion. An alternative perspective could link rejection to projection or even to protection. All these, and furthermore aspects will be discussed in a seminar organized by the Department of Psychology.

Manager of Atlantica Hotels and Resorts delivers online presentation to business students
What are 'The keys to success in Food and Beverage management'? This was the focus of the online presentation delivered Wednesday 21 April 2021 by Mr Dimitris Perrakis (Area Operations Manager, Atlantica Hotels & Resorts) to third-year BA (Hons) Hotel and Hospitality programme students. The event was part of the Food&Beverage Management in Hotels and Hospitality unit taught by Dr Giovanni Serafini. Thanks to the speaker's vast experience, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus students were able to appreciate Mr Dimitris Perrakis' insights on major developments in F&B management. After illustrating the difference in F&B management trends before and after the year 2000, he then focused on the massive impact of Covid-19 on F&B operations. The deep changes caused by the pandemic encompass both F&B products and, most importantly, services. Since contactless services are expected to become the norm, hospitality businesses need to invest in digital services, educate visitors, and employ a talented workforce. Thus, the pandemic urges F&B professionals to be, among others, 'safe environment providers'. The resulting minimisation of human interaction renders the emotional intelligence of hospitality professionals an imperative, now more than ever. Being customer-centric acts as a fundamental organizing and design principle. Guest lectures take place frequently at CITY College, offering students the opportunity to get valuable insights from industry experts.
