This year CITY College is going to organise three events by Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of our postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology at our Psychology Department, Anna G. Orfanidou, Lecturer at our Humanities Department and Prof. Dilay Çelebi Gonidis, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department. Protecting the Brain While Healing Hearts Monday 2 June 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm (EEST) Online Speaker: Dr Kalliopi Megari Lecturer and Programme Lead of postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology Psychology Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus Overview: Discover how specialised brain training programmes can boost recovery and quality of life after heart surgery. Cardiac surgery can unfortunately lead to cognitive decline which affects the patient’s ability to think, learn, remember and make decisions. This not only impacts an individual’s wellbeing, but can also result in morbidity and higher health care costs. Clinical neuropsychologist Kalliopi Megari of the CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, will explain how cognitive reserve - the brain’s ability to cope with damage - plays a key role in recovery. She’ll stress the need for assessments that target this reserve so that patients can be guided into specialised cognitive enhancement programmes designed to improve post-surgery recovery and outcomes. Kalliopi will also discuss how rehabilitation programmes pre-surgically might also be able to reinforce cognitive reserve before any surgery-related decline occurs. This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. Join the event Doomscrolling and Mental Health Tuesday 3 June 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm (EEST) Online Speaker: Anna G. Orfanidou Researcher and Lecturer Humanities Department, CITY College, University of York Europe Campus Overview: People often seek information as a means of coping with challenging situations. Attuning to negative information can be adaptive because it alerts people to risks in their environment, thereby preparing them for similar threats in the future. However, doomscrolling - the compulsive consumption of negative news - is linked to increased psychological distress, including anxiety, depression feelings of helplessness or even suicidal tendencies. Anna G. Orfanidou of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus examines how we can reclaim control over our digital lives and break the cycle of constant negative media consumption. Join her as she explores tools for fostering mindful engagement, empowering individuals to shift from passive scrolling to active, conscious online interaction. This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. Sunrise Movement at the Animal Shelter
On Sunday 6th of April, students and staff - all members of the Sunrise Movement - spent a heartwarming day at the Stray Planet Animal Shelter, lending their time, energy, and compassion to help care for the dogs waiting for their forever homes. The day was luckily lovely and sunny, our group took part in various activities, including walking, feeding, and playing with the shelter’s furry residents. Laughter and wagging tails filled the air as the dogs enjoyed a much-needed dose of affection and attention. In addition to volunteering time, the visitors brought with them generous donations of food, which were warmly received by the shelter staff. The contributions will help feed the animals in the coming days.

Executive MBA Students Explore Risk Management at the Annual Study Trip in Thessaloniki
An insightful workshop by Mr Athanasios Fourtounas As part of the Annual Study Trip in Thessaloniki, Executive MBA students from across all programme locations participated in an insightful workshop on "Risk Management: A Way to Avoid Crisis Management and Manage Losses", led by Mr. Athanasios Fourtounas, Assistant Professor at our Business Department. During the workshop, participants gained hands-on experience with Risk Management processes through a detailed and realistic project scenario. The session guided them through the essential steps of effective risk assessment and mitigation, ensuring they could apply these principles in real-world business settings. The workshop began with an analysis of the Project Charter, where participants familiarised themselves with the project’s scope and objectives. They were then divided into teams to identify key stakeholders and assess their potential impact on the project. With this foundation in place, participants moved on to developing a Risk Management Plan, followed by an in-depth identification of potential opportunities and threats. Using specialised Risk Management templates, they documented and debated the nature of each risk before proceeding to the qualitative analysis stage, where they prioritized risks based on their likelihood and impact. Finally, participants formulated risk response strategies and discussed monitoring techniques to effectively track and manage risks throughout the project’s execution. Through this structured, hands-on approach, participants not only deepened their understanding of risk assessment and crisis prevention but also enhanced their strategic decision-making skills. By the end of the session, the enthusiastic discussions and smiling faces were clear signs that the workshop had successfully met its objectives—knowledge was gained, and valuable skills were acquired!
