Business alumna launches low-cost digital marketing agency
Our business alumna, Anastasia Akimenko, has launched a new venture called True Digitalists (TD), a low-cost digital marketing agency aspiring to help businesses exceed their goals by delivering a range of customer-centered solutions at a low cost. Its mission is to transform the traditional agency-client relationships into an agile, transparent, and cost-effective approach to collaboration. Our alumnus, Gleb Kapusto, who has completed the MA in Digital Marketing and Social Media programme, is also engaged in the development of the venture. Anastasia says: “Apart from the traditional digital solutions, the company also provides free consultation for young specialists and students, concerning a career in digital marketing, which lately became very popular” and continues “The global spending on digital marketing has increased to approximately 100 billion this year. While media consumption habits are changing as well as companies' approach to reach the target audience online, one is thing is clear: the Internet won't vanish overnight”. TD provides a wide variety of solutions, including but not limited to search engine optimisation, website development, competitive benchmarking, opportunity analysis, and social media marketing. Anastasia completed the BA (Hons) in Business Studies (Marketing) last June. As she says her studies helped her put theory into practice in her new venture: “The last year of studies was the most interesting for me. I had the idea of a venture and, fortunately, all my subjects — to some extent — helped me to formulate it completely.” The International Faculty wishes Anastasia best success in her venture.

The English Studies Department Goes (Inter)cultural via Audiovisual Translation
The fourth Personal and Professional Development Seminar of the English Studies Department, held on Tuesday, 4 December, confirms the multiple applications and significance of translation in general, and audiovisual translation in particular. Guest speaker, Dr. Katerina Gouleti, an academic and professional translator and subtitler, delivered a highly informative and multi-sided seminar titled: (Inter)cultural Representations and Practices in Audiovisual Translation. In this seminar, Dr. Gouleti demonstrated the connection between audiovisual translation and the market place, academia as well as education, providing multiple, highly diverse and interactive examples to demonstrate the practices and applications of audiovisual translation. The significance of audiovisual translation can be found in economy, culture and education. Participants were made aware of different types of translation (intralingual, interlingual, intersemiotic) and were informed that the future lies in the practice of transcreation. As Dr. Gouleti informs, in an age of globalization, marketing and translation have taken a turn towards glocalization: customizing for local markets and needs. Thus the role of the subtitler, as well as translator, is becoming more visible and necessary. This can be evidenced in the law just recently passed by the European Union where broadcasters will have to provide customized audiovisual translations, to the booming demands for translators/interpreters due to immigration and the surge of refugees to the ever growing online educational programmes (MOOCs) offered by various institutions the world over. Dr. Gouleti emphasized the tight association between translation and culture, how audiovisual translation can extend to semiotic activism (citing the amongst others, the example of Podemos), how technology has assisted in the development of the field with subtitle glasses – already implemented in the context of the National Theatre of London - to software that can assist in the teaching of languages whilst also promoting active/creative learners and audiovisual literacy. Evidently, the field of Audiovisual translation is expanding, developing and promises to be a fruitful area for academic research, occupational opportunities as well as an area that can provide additional perspectives that can assist in the cultivation of cultural and educational appreciation.

Computer Science student presents Lego robotics workshop at Albanian school
Our computer science student, Ms Zoi Gkatsi, a very active member of the Robotics Club, organised on her own initiative, a Lego Robotics Workshop at school in Korce, Albania. During the workshop Zoi discussed the basics of programming, bringing in the classroom her own experiences from the club on the Lego EV3 kits. Approximately, 45 students participated in the interactive workshop that aimed at introducing them to computational thinking. Students were first asked to brainstorm on scenarios for the robot and then to work together to achieve the project’s goal by dragging and dropping movements for the robot. Children immediately saw the result of their programme as the robot acted accordingly. By the end of the workshop, children learnt how commands can be combined together to write programmes that enable robots to move in the 3D space. The event was very successful as children were really excited to participate. Congratulations to our student on this really nice initiative!
