Dr Szamosi, Director of the Executive MBA, delivers Open Seminar in Baku
Dr Leslie Szamosi, Director of the Executive MBA offered by the University of Sheffield International Faculty in Azerbaijan, delivered an insightful seminar on ‘Getting the Top to Listen’ in Baku. Attracting managers and business professionals, the event took place 11 September 2018 at the Hilton Hotel. Dr Szamosi’s presentation was focused on guiding participants to get their voice heard and their ideas communicated to members of a company’s or organisation’s top management. "The idea may be great, but if it’s not communicated well, it won’t get any traction. Building buy-in ahead of time, finding the right medium for your message and impressing with unique visuals are the main principles that will help you persuade the top to get into your idea!", said Dr. Szamosi. In the seminar participants got a clearer understanding of what decision-makers are looking for and how to target them both intellectually and emotionally with information. The event was successful and presented a very innovative topic as reported by participating managers. This was the first Open MBA Seminar to take place in Baku. The Executive MBA programme is scheduled to run for the first time in Baku in academic year 2018-19.

The South East European Research Centre (SEERC) seeks candidates for the following position: Research Associate (RA) for “RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION (RRI) (RA/RRI/2018) The South East European Research Centre (SEERC) is a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit research centre based in Thessaloniki, Greece. The centre was founded by the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College in 2004, as an international research institute with the mission to support the stable and peaceful development of South-East Europe by conducting pure and applied research and policy analysis in, and for the region. In this direction, SEERC employs the existing research capacities of The University of Sheffield and its International Faculty and develops multi-disciplinary networks of researchers across South-East Europe. More information can be found at: www.seerc.org Description Responsible Research and Innovation RRI (according to the EC): “RRI is an inclusive approach to research and innovation (R&I), to ensure that societal actors work together during the whole research and innovation process. It aims to better align both the process and outcomes of R&I, with the values, needs and expectations of European society. In general terms, RRI implies anticipating and assessing potential implications and societal expectations with regard to research and innovation. In practice, RRI consists of designing and implementing R&I policy that will: engage society more broadly in its research and innovation activities, increase access to scientific results, ensure gender equality, in both the research process and research content, take into account the ethical dimension, and promote formal and informal science education.” SEERC is involved in the following RRI projects, funded under the “Science with and for Society” part of Horizon 2020: FIT4RRI: Fostering Improved Training Tools For Responsible Research and Innovation (on-going project; https://fit4rri.eu/) TeRRItoria: TErritorial Responsible Research and Innovation ThrOugh the involvement of local R&IActors (new project) GRACE: Grounding RRI Actions to Achieve Institutional Changes in European Research Funding and Performing Organisations (new project) The Research Associate will work in direct cooperation with the SEERC director and contribute to the development of the projects TeRRItoria and GRACE with limited input on the project FIT4RRI. The RA will participate in all project activities, prepare reports and journal articles, engage with project partners, coordinate research and support activities within the framework of these projects and contribute to the promotion of RRI principles in the European Research Area. Duration: 36 months. The Boris Trajkovski Scholarship Award Ceremony 2018 in Skopje
The 2018 Boris Trajkovski scholarship recipients were awarded their Executive MBA scholarship during the Award Ceremony held in Skopje by Dr. Gjorgje Ivanov, the President of the country. The scholars will have the opportunity to attend the prestigious University of Sheffield Executive MBA programme run by the International Faculty in Thessaloniki. The awarding ceremony took place at the President’s Villa, in Skopje with Mr George Efstathiadis, Director of the Executive Development Institute (EDI) representing the University of Sheffield International Faculty, as well as the Minister of Education and Science, Mr. Arber Ademi. The Boris Trajkovski EMBA scholarship programme is traditionally co-founded by the International Faculty and the country’s Government, and provide the opportunity to scholars to study for a University of Sheffield Executive MBA degree in Thessaloniki.

Prof. Ketikidis and Dr Solomon participate in the Triple Helix Conference 2018 in Manchester, UK
Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty CITY College and President of The Triple Helix Association in Greece (THA Greece), Dr Adrian Solomon, Project Manager at SEERC and Operations Manager at The Triple Helix Association in Greece and Mr Besart Hajrizi, PhD candidate at SEERC, participated in the 16th Triple Helix Conference representing the Greek THA Chapter. The conference took place in Manchester, UK, 5-8 September 2018. The team was engaged in key activities that ensure the leadership of the association. Prof Ketikidis took part in the annual Executive Committee of the Global Triple Helix Association (THA) where is a Board Member setting the organization’s triple helix events strategy for the upcoming period. In his turn, Dr Solomon was engaged in working sessions for acquiring future EU funding with top innovators and companies, members of the THA. The THA Greece team. Moreover, the business model of the THA Chapter of Greece was show-cased by Dr Solomon & Prof. Ketikidis in a dedicated panel in order to serve as experience-sharing for other chapters. This activity is aimed at cross-chapter experience sharing as well as at eventually paving the way for new chapters. Also, Dr Solomon & Prof Ketikidis delivered a responsible research and innovation (RRI) training as part of a dedicated workshop focusing on the FIT4RRI project in which the South East European Research Centre is a project partner. RRI is deemed to be the next trend in R&D departments and FIT4RRI is one of the top projects aiming to innovate in this field. Finally, Mr. Hajrizi delivered a presentation from his PhD research entitled “Internal and External SME-university interaction determinants: empirical evidence in a transitional economy”. The conference ended with an Official Gala held at the prestigious Manchester Museum of Science and Technology where Prof Ketikidis announced several of the Conference Awards. SEERC organises ‘Social Entrepreneurship Academy’ in Athens for participants from Qatar
Our research centre, SEERC, successfully organised the “Athens Social Entrepreneurship Academy” for a group of would-be social entrepreneurs from Qatar, funded by the NAMA Center for youth and entrepreneur empowerment of Qatar. The training took place on 23-27 July 2018 in Athens. Twenty five enthusiastic participants were intensively trained on how to create, fund and sustain a start-up focusing on addressing major societal problems, visited Athenian NGOs and social enterprises and took part in their activities, discussed with VCs and CSR representatives and enjoyed Athenian hospitability and the many attractions the capital has to offer. SEERC cooperated for the implementation of the Academy with the NGO incubator HIGGS and the mentors of Innovation Farm.

Young Researchers Skills Development Week (YRW) 2018
Celebrating academic research at the International Faculty CITY College Every year, the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, and its research centre, SEERC, celebrate academic research with the Young Researchers Skills Development Week (YRW). This year the YRW2018, took place in Thessaloniki from 7th to 11th of May 2018 with approximately 200 student participaints. The event provided the opportunity to university students of all levels, PhD, MSc and BSc, and academics to present their work to a wide audience, thus making possible the interaction with lecturers and researchers, as well as with other young colleagues. They also had the opportunity to develop professional and employability skills. The Week consisted of two conferences, the Doctoral Student Conference and the Student Spring Symposium and six seminars on research methodologies by academic of the International Faculty: "Bilingual & Bimodal congnitive effects", by Dr. Aristea Ladas, Lecturer & Research Associate & Ms. Olympia Halikiopoulou, PT Lecturer, Psychology Department "Randomised control trials for treatment in clinical studies", by Dr. Anna Emmanouel, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Lecturer, Psychology Department “Introduction to Research Methodolody I : Quantitative Methods”, by Mr. Michalis Samarinas, PT Lecturer, English Studies Department “Introduction to Research Methodology II: Qualitative Methods”, by Dr. Vassilis Chatzimpyros, Lecturer and Research Director, Psychology Department “Quantitative Methods: Econometric Techniques in research”, by Mr. Petros Golitsis, Lecturer, Business Administration & Economics Department “How to review a paper”, by Prof. Petros Kefalas, Vice-Principal for Teaching & Learning The Young Researchers Skills Development Week (YRW) events contributed to new knowledge and presented valuable research work and provided opportunities for interactive sessions and discussions, networking and exchange of ideas and practices.

Summer School 2018 on ‘Refugee and Migrant Crisis: New challenges of integration’
Another successful Summer School took place at the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, offering an exciting learning experience for a diverse group of students coming from many different countries and universities (including students from the University of Sheffield, UK). Entitled ‘Refugee and Migrant Crisis: New challenges of integration’. Jointly organised by The University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College and the University’s Department of Politics and Department of Sociological Studies, the course took place between 25 June and 3 July 2018 at the main campus of the International Faculty in Thessaloniki. This year’s Summer School focused on making students aware of the post-2014 migrant crisis, its wider political, economic and social implications and the new challenges rising from refugee integration, through a series of lectures, workshops, guest speeches and volunteering. The course’s main themes and activities comprised of lectures, workshops, experiential learning, group work, coaching sessions and volunteering, making it particularly diverse and interesting for participants. The academic part of the curriculum was enriched with a series of expert guest speakers who shared with students their experiences. Guest expert speakers who joined the Summer School represented organizations such as the UNHCR, ARSIS, Perichoresis and the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Additionally participants had the chance to volunteer with the NGO Perichoresis in the town of Katerini and to have a discussion with refugees from the temporary refugee settlement of Diavata as part of the NGO Arsis’s activities linked to integrating youth. Academic lectures were delivered by the following academics: Dr Vassilis Chatzibirros (Lecturer, Psychology Department, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield - CITY College) Dr Manos Maragkoudakis (Associate Professor, Computer and Communication Systems Department, University of the Aegean) Prof. Sarah Neal (Professor, Department of Sociological Studies, University of Sheffield) Dr Alexandra Prodromidou (SEERC Research Associate, Lecturer, Business Administration and Economics Department, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield) Dr Miltiadis Sarigiannidis (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Aristotle University) Dr Joseph Turner (Research Fellow in International Migration, Department of Politics, The University of Sheffield) Dr Marcia Vera Espinoza (Research Associate, Department of Politics, University of Sheffield) Dr Dimitris Xefteris (Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, University of Cyrpus) The Summer School included a visit to the Municipality of Thessaloniki, where Ms Virginia Politi, Head of Social Policy of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and Coordinator of ‘REACT’, welcomed all students and talked to them about the efforts made by the Municipality of Thessaloniki regarding the issues arising from managing the migrant crisis and facilitating the integration of refugees and asylum seekers in Thessaloniki. The on-site visits to Perichoresis in Katerini and volunteering at refugee settlements were a very powerful experience for student participants and gave them invaluable insights. As always the programme included various social activities, including sightseeing in Thessaloniki and a day trip to the sandy beaches of Chalkidki. Participating students reported that the programme exceeded their expectations and left very positive feedback. The International Faculty organises Summer Schools every year on different timely topics and welcomes students from various countries across the region, including students from the University of Sheffield, UK. SEERC PhD candidate, Ms Ketikidi, participates in International Marketing Conference in Athens
Ms Elina Ketikidi, PhD Candidate at the International Faculty's research centre, SEERC, participated in the 6th International Conference in Contemporary Marketing Issues that took place in Athens, 27-29 of June. Ms Ketikidi had the opportunity to present her paper on "Investigating online consumer behaviour in the fashion market: a qualitative study of consumers and digital experts in Greece” and share her views on the topic. During her presentation she discussed how digital content marketing, online persuasion methods and online promotional tools may affect online consumer behaviour in the fashion market. PhD candidates often participate in conferences, share their research findings and insights along their way to achieving their PhD degree and at the same time practice their presentation skills. Ms Ketikidi Elina graduated from the International Faculty CITY College with an MA in Digital Marketing and Social Media. In 2017, she became a full time PhD student under the Doctoral Program offered by the University of Sheffield and the South East European Research Centre (SEERC). Her PhD topic is “Sustainability in Fashion and Online Communications: A study of sustainable fashion brands communication practises and consumers' engagement behaviour.”

11th out of 250 institutions across eight European countries Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Rankings 2019 The University of Sheffield has been ranked as one of the best universities in Europe according to The Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Rankings. The University of was named 11th out of 250 institutions across eight European countries and underlines the university's reputation for outstanding teaching. The new rankings from The Times Higher Education are the first international ranking to measure the quality of teaching across the world. The rankings, which places the University of Sheffield joint ninth in the UK, draw Vice-President for Education, Professor Wyn Morgan and President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, commented: "I am genuinely delighted to see the commitment of extraordinary teachers and colleagues at Sheffield acknowledged in this significant international review of teaching quality in universities. This wonderful result reflects not only dedicated teaching but the way staff work with students to challenge and inspire, listening to their concerns and seeking new ways to connect what they are learning to the challenges they will face after graduation. "Good teaching is not a product. It takes great effort on the part of teacher and student, the latest learning resources, technologies, facilities and sometimes intensive support.
