Interview with Armenian MBA student, Ms Rema Ohanyan
Read the interview of our MBA student in Armenia, Ms Rema Ohanyan, Project Manager at FINCA Armenia who shares her MBA experience. My two years of Executive MBA programme that became a Lifestyle Rema Ohanyan Project Manager at FINCA Armenia 1. Why did you choose the University of Sheffield MBA programme? Right after graduation from Armenian State University of Economics I started my career path in the local Financial Market and since then have been working for several local banks and credit organizations. An MBA degree from a globally-recognised University had always been one of my main goals. However, the more you advance your career, the more difficult it seems to make the decision of quitting, leaving Armenia and applying for an MBA degree abroad. The Executive MBA programme offered by the University of Sheffield allowed me to join one of the best courses of a top university, and at the same time continue working and living in my country. That was a perfect match for me. Though the programme is quite challenging, it is also well- designed, enabling us to combine working and studying hours and in practice discuss all professional issues during the weekend classes: truly, a brilliant mix of knowledge and practice. 2. What do you appreciate about the programme the most? To say that I appreciate the programme as it gave me a lot of knowledge means to say nothing. From the very first day I decided to apply till these days the spirit of the University of Sheffield and the programme changed my mindset totally. Apart from the knowledge and experience sharing opportunities, the Culture and the Social Environment are the things I appreciate most about the programme. During these years, despite the fact, that there were no classes scheduled, I couldn’t spend a single day without examining new articles, discussions with peers, professors and the programme staff. Hence, the MBA programme at the University of Sheffield became my lifestyle, part of my routine, and it’s hard to imagine the day without all of this. Now, when the graduation becomes closer I am more than confident that after graduation the endless journey with the University will just become more profound around the alumni community, networking and new projects. 3. Annual Study Week at the University of Sheffield. What did you enjoy the most? What impressed you? What are the benefits of this part of the programme? The study week at the University of Sheffield gives us an opportunity to be in the heart of the University students’ life, after years come back to the student desk, and get a good restart far from daily working tasks and responsibilities. The most impressive part of the study week is the course of Operation Management along with the trip to the Jaguar Factory at Liverpool, where you see and understand the meaning of the famous words “Assembly Line”. During the classes, we engage with peers from different countries and besides sharing experience and getting valuable insights we learn a lot about their culture and their business environment. This is a truly precious experience that can be useful for our career and the sector we work in. 4. What are the most important lessons learnt so far? The key point of the programme is that though we are students and as such receive marks for assignments, pass or fail the exams, each of us as a professional sets high standards for herself (himself): we compete with ourselves, not our peers. It’s a constant process of self-improvement and growth, with the advantage of happening in a team, learning from each other. 5. What has been the impact of the programme and knowledge gained on your work and career so far? While working in the sphere of the project management it is very important to identify all the correlated processes and risks that might occur during a project. The combination of the knowledge from finance, business economics, business strategy, marketing, organisational behavior and people management and other tracks improved my managerial, financial and setting tasks skills as well as enhanced the communication skills in business environment. I would strongly recommend this programme to everyone aspiring for personal and professional growth. This programme not only equips you with profound knowledge and practical skills, it educates your attitude toward the business environment and colleagues, teaches to negotiate better, and eventually, trains your interpersonal skills and flexibility, that are vital in nowadays world.

Mr. Pavlidis and students from the Psychology Dept. participate in European Healthcare Conference in Dresden
On 27 June 2018 Mr. George Pavlidis, Lecturer at our Psychology Department and PhD Candidate in Gerontology, participated in HCEU Conference on "Cross-border mobility of healthcare professionals" in Dresden, Germany, together with our postgraduate student, Ms Georgia Papaioannou, attending the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology, and our Psychology graduate Ms Tzani Lina. Mr. Pavlidis and his team presented at the conference research findings of the HelpCare project, a programme that the International Faculty’s research centre, SEERC, completed successfully last September. The European Conference attracted representatives from politics, authorities, healthcare, research and education in Germany and abroad to exchange views on current healthcare-related topics such as the migration of healthcare professionals, the recognition of foreign qualifications in healthcare and the future of care in the context of social change. Students at the International Faculty interested in research are given the opportunity to deepen their research skills with the guidance of the academic staff and often get to participate in conferences and share their work while at the same time gain the experience of presenting an academic paper or project. Dr Emmanouel meets the Director of Neurology at Papageorgiou Hospital in the frame of our neuropsychology students’ Practicum
Dr Anna Emmanouel, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Lecturer at the Psychology Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield and supervisor of the practicum in clinical neuropsychology met with Dr. Xenofon Fitsioris, Director of Neurology at the General Hospital of Papageorgiou where our postgraduate students in clinical neuropsychology conduct their practicum. Dr Anna Emmanouel, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Lecturer at the Psychology Dept. of the International Faculty and Dr. Xenofon Fitsioris, Director of Neurology at the Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki The meeting took place in the context of the cooperation of the International Faculty with the General Hospital of Papageorgiou in Thessaloniki for the Practicum component of the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology programme. Through this cooperation our students have the opportunity to do their Practicum at the Papageorgiou Hospital and get the invaluable experience of working with patients in a public hospital. Dr Fitsioris spoke highly of our students’ knowledge and competence. Expressing her gratitude Dr Emmanouel commented: ‘No words to express my thanks and gratitude to Dr. Xenofon Fitsioris, Director of Neurology at the General Hospital of Papageorgiou. I am touched since I conducted my practicum there working close to this exceptional neurologist and man, and without his great support and contribution the practicum of our trainees in this huge and several times awarded hospital (for both clinical and research work) won’t be a reality now. Our trainees have there the great opportunity to apply assessment and cognitive intervention programmes to patients with different types of dementia, epilepsy and multiple scleroses and gain valuable professional experience working with these populations. Both parts are very satisfied and looking forward to continue this collaboration in the future.”

Prof. Ketikidis elected in the Executive Board of the European Business Angels Network (EBAN)
Congratulations to Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, who was elected in the Executive Board of the European Business Angels Network (EBAN) in Sofia, on 25th June 2018. Prof. Ketikidis has been involved in EBAN’s activities the past few years participating in its events and initiatives. What is EBAN EBAN is the pan-European representative for the early stage investor gathering over 150 member organizations more than 50 countries today. Established in 1999 by a group of pioneer angel networks in Europe with the collaboration of the European Commission and EURADA, EBAN represents a sector estimated to invest 7.5 billion Euros a year and playing a vital role in Europe’s future, notably in the funding of SMEs. EBAN fuels Europe’s growth through the creation of wealth.

Bulgarian alumna publishes book on 'Charity Communication'
Our alumna, Dr Evelina Christova, Professor at New Bulgarian University at the Mass Communications Department presented in Bulgaria her new book entitled ‘Charity Communication’, that was recently published. The book presents results of three research studies she conducted over the period 2012-2017. The book is mainly addressed to the Bulgarian scientific community but it could also be useful to professional communities. ‘Charity Communication’ discusses the processes of communicating to all parts in the charity process. It investigates the possibility of realisation of charity activities and how this can be done in the most effective way for all parties involved in the process. Dr Christova explained what are the positive trends in society, connected to charity: “The best thing is that young people show support and positive attitude towards charity – not only as donations of funds but also in volunteer work. I have studied 896 students across the country. I received a very positive feedback. There is a positive trend that the media devotes more attention to charity themes. Another positive trend is that businesses are increasingly developing their corporate social responsibility. Last but not least there is a tendency for our own branch of communication specialists to develop new professions in the industry related to this type of activities.” Dr Christova also went on to outline the negative perspectives as well: “The personal donations are under 10% so the number of people who donate funds is limited. Media often forces journalists to look for scandalous or negative news for the sake of ratings. They are also restricted in mentioning donors because they are brands or trademarks”. Dr Evelina Christova is a graduate of the MA in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations programme. She is also member of the Committee of Professional Ethics of the Bulgarian Public Relations Society.

University of Sheffield appoints Professor Koen Lamberts as its next President and Vice-Chancellor
The University of Sheffield has announced the appointment of Professor Koen Lamberts as its next President and Vice-Chancellor. Professor Lamberts, an exceptional leader in higher education, is currently Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of York. Prior to joining the University of York as Vice-Chancellor and President in 2014, Professor Lamberts was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University of Warwick. Professor Lamberts is a cognitive psychologist with an extensive track record in experimental and theoretical research on human perception and memory, for which he has been awarded prizes from the Experimental Psychology Society and the British Psychological Society. Speaking of his appointment, Professor Koen Lamberts said: "I feel enormously privileged to be appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield. "Sheffield is known across the world for the excellence, impact and distinctiveness of its research and teaching, and for being a university which speaks fearlessly for the value of international scholarship to transform lives for the better. "I am committed to working with colleagues to further enhance Sheffield's reputation as a global university which strives to solve society's greatest challenges at the same time as upholding its proud history, guided by its founding principles.” Professor Lamberts was born in Hasselt, Belgium, and undertook both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Leuven, culminating in the award of his PhD in Psychology in 1992. Professor Lamberts succeeds Professor Sir Keith Burnett, who is retiring at the end of September after a very successful decade as the University’s leader. The University’s Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Gill Valentine will be the interim Vice-Chancellor from 1 October 2018 until Professor Lamberts joins the University on 1 November 2018. Professor Sir Keith Burnett said: "I am delighted that Professor Koen Lamberts will take up the role of President and Vice-Chancellor of this great University. In addition to his reputation as a scholar and educational leader, Koen has been a true advocate for the international community of scholars who together make such a profound difference for society here in the UK and around the world. “He will lead an institution which is deeply committed to the public benefit of education and its power to transform people's lives. NBU Rector, Prof. Plamen Bochkov, visits the International Faculty in Thessaloniki in the frame of the collaboration between the two institutions
Prof. Plamen Bochkov, Rector of the New Bulgarian University (NBU), together with a team of NBU delegates, visited for the first time the main campus of The University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College in Thessaloniki in the frame of the collaboration between the two academic institutions. Mr. Yannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty CITY College and Prof. Bochkov, NBU Rector, met and reaffirmed their common interest in promoting quality education in Bulgaria. Representatives from NBU and the International Faculty attended a series of meetings where the developments and vision of the collaboration, as well as academic issues, were discussed. Dr Megaklis Petmezas, Vice Principal for Communication, Marketing and Student Recruitment and NBU delegates, namely Dr. Dimiter Trendafilov, Vice-Rector for International Relations, Dr. Vladimir Dimitrov, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Dr. Dimiter Trendafilov, Assistant to the Rector for International Relations and Dr. Evelina Christova, Assistant Professor, also participated in the meetings at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The Memorandum of Understanding that has been signed between NBU and the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College defines the framework of cooperation in offering University of Sheffield Bachelors and Masters programmes in Sofia, together with NBU as partner university in Bulgaria. Students attending the University of Sheffield programmes in Sofia at the NBU campus will receive two degrees upon graduation: the University of Sheffield degree and the NBU degree. Under this cooperation the two parties involved aim at providing exceptional educational opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Bulgaria.
