Mr Liassides delivers Business Seminars in Ukraine
Mr. Chris Liassides, Senior Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, delivered successfully two insightful seminars in Ukraine, in collaboration with the European Business Association (EBA). The first seminar took place 13th June in Kyiv. Mr. Liassides presented the topic ‘Message Appeals in Advertising’ and attempted to shed light on the use of message appeals in communications and advertising. Participants were exposed to various message appeals, from celebrity endorsement and fear to humor and sex, and examined their significance and suitability for the promotion of products and services. Participants gained a better understanding of handling communications and campaigns for maximum effectiveness. The next day, on 14th of June, Mr Liassides went on to deliver another business seminar, this time in Lviv, entitled ‘Gamification - The contemporary way to engage employees and customers’. Mr Liassides talked about the technique of gamification - a modern tool in engaging employees and customers - presented the principles of gamification and discussed and how excitement can develop, through the use of the 10 game mechanics, the six-step method that can be employed, and the psychology behind such an effort. In his presentation he included success stories involving gamification from a number of industries, ranging from the hotel and hospitality industry to retailing. Both events were organised in collaboration with the International Faculty’s educational partner in Kyiv, EBA, and received positive feedback from participants.

The Principal of the International Faculty at the Higher Education Forum on Transnational Education (TNE) in Athens
Prince Charles of Wales honours the event with his persence Mr. Ioannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty CITY College participated as speaker at the Higher Education Forum on Transnational Education (TNE) that took place, on 10th May 2018 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. Prince Charles of Wales honoured the reception of the event with his presence and met with the event’s participants, as part of his agenda during his visit in Athens. Representing the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, Mr Ververidis shared his view on the event’s topic: ‘The Future of UK Higher Education in Greece after Brexit – Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects’. The event’s panel comprised TNE providers from Greece and the UK, as well as senior representatives from UK institutions and education policy makers and education experts who came together to discuss and exchange their views. Mr. Ioannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty, meets Prince Charles of Wales at the Higher Education Forum on Transnational Education (TNE) The forum was organised by the British Council and aimed at further strengthening educational connections between Greece and the UK, and facilitate collaborations.

Official Launch of the Executive MBA in Baku, Azerbaijan
The official launch of the Executive MBA in Baku was organized by the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College and took place with great success on Tuesday, 12th June 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Baku. Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of the Executive MBA programme, opened the event and warmly welcomed all guests. The Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Nicolaos D. Kanellos, the Country Director of British Council, Azerbaijan, Ms. Elizabeth White and representative of Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan honored the event with their presence and addressed a short welcome. Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Executive MBA programme also represented the International Faculty at the launching event welcoming the guests and talked about The Executive MBA Learning Experience. The press conference followed the presentations while the event concluded with a short reception. The event was well-attended by officials and representatives of the civil and business society as well as the media. The University of Sheffield Executive MBA will start running in Baku in November 2018, adding Azerbaijan as its 8th destination across South East and Eastern Europe, a well as the Caucasus region. The University of Sheffield, ranked no 75th best University in the World and its International Faculty aspire for this development to prove to be a very important contribution for the executive education in the country of Azerbaijan and to endorse the international character of the Executive MBA programme. The English Studies Dept. co-organises the 5th Language in Focus International Conference in Thessaloniki
A truly multicultural and interdisciplinary event The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College announces the successful completion of the 5th consecutive Language in Focus conference (LIF), which took place on 3-5 May 2018 at the Grand Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki. The event was co-organised by Çukurova University, Turkey, the English Studies Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and the Southeast European Research Centre (SEERC). The Conference featured five distinguished keynote speakers, 150 presentations and workshops delivered by participants coming from 37 countries and representing 100 academic institutions, strengthening the event’s international and multicultural character. Language in Focus is an international annual conference that has gradually become a reference point for researchers working on Linguistics, Education and languages world-wide, as it has continuously offered an academically challenging environment for the exchange of ideas and research among established academics, young researchers and zealous practitioners. This year’s LIF conference hosted a variety of talks by prominent scholars and practitioners in the fields of education and language learning. The Conference opening statement was delivered by Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of Research, Innovation & External Relations, and Chairman of the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC). Dr Luke Prodromou, Lecturer at The University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, delivered a very interactive plenary talk examining the notion of ‘creative idiomaticity’ and how language learners’ creativity comes into play in language learning. Dr Prodromou attempted a redefinition of the notion of fluency, which takes into account the needs and capabilities of the diverse users of English as a Lingua Franca – and the realities of the classroom. In her talk, Prof. Sylviane Granger, Professor Emerita and Invited Professor at the University of Louvain, Belgium, challenged a persistent tendency in language teaching to treat the single word as the prominent unit in language learning. The main focus of her presentation was on collocations and lexical bundles, two highly-frequent types of unit that are largely transparent and therefore tend to escape learners’ notice. Diane Larsen-Freeman, Professor of Linguistics, and a Research Scientist at the English Language Institute of Michigan (USA), shed light upon language learners as agents actively involved in the teaching-learning process. Her presentation concluded with some insightful suggestions about what teachers can do to promote learner agency so that learners and teachers can better cope with today’s challenging times. Finally, David Singleton, Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, and Professor at the University of Pannonia Hungary, and at the State University of Applied Sciences, Konin, Poland, looked at the interplay between L1 and L2 in bi/multilingual individuals. Academic staff of our English Studies Department had a strong presence in the event, making a solid contribution to this year’s conference through their presentations. Ms. Filio Chasioti, Dr Vicky Papachristou, Dr Kelly Pasmatzi, Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian, Ms. Despina Sarantidou, and Dr Zoi Tatsioka, all delivered enlightening presentations. The English Studies Department was also represented by the graduates: Evangelos Chatzipanagiotidis, Efthymia Kalaitzidou, Eva Kanonidou, Paola Marrone, and Iro Sapouna, who presented research conducted within the Department highlighting also its research-oriented profile. We would also like to thank our colleagues from the University of Sheffield who honoured us with their presence and delivered insightful presentations and workshops. More specifically, we would like to thank Richard Simpson (Director of the English Language Teaching Centre), Dr Gabriel Ozon (School of English), Dr Nigel Russell and Dr Karen Ford (Learning and Teaching Services), who travelled to Thessaloniki in order to take part in the event. In addition to the conference sessions, participants had the opportunity to experience a rich social and cultural programme, making their stay in Thessaloniki even more enjoyable. The programme included a visit at the archaeological site of Vergina, the Ancient City of Aiges (i.e. the first capital of Macedonia) as well as a city tour in Thessaloniki. Our guests were impressed by both destinations and had the change to get a flavour of the Greek cultural heritage. Overall, the event was an overwhelming success which managed to bring together academics from the four corners of the earth. Warm congratulations for their endeavours to organise this great Conference are due to the three Members of the Organising Committee: Associate Professor Cem Cam (Conference President), Dr Paschalia Patsala (Head of the English Studies Department) and Dr Zoi Tatsioka (Lecturer and Research Director of our English Studies Department). Finally, special thanks are due for their hard work to the Conference Secreteriat, the members of the Scientific Committee, the Chairs of the Conference sessions, as well as the amazing and friendly team of student-volunteers coming from the English Studies Department. We are pleased to announce that the 6th Language in Focus Conference (LIF2019) will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 2-4 May 2019, also with the presence of outstanding Keynote Speakers in the areas of Linguistics and English language teaching: Prof. Guy Cook (King’s College London, UK), Prof. Susan Hunston (University of Birmingham, UK), Prof. Suzanne Romaine (University of Oxford, UK), Prof. Nina Spada (University of Toronto, Canada), and Prof. Penny Ur (Haifa University, Israel). With the successful completion of LIF2018, a solid collaboration has been established between the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield and Çukurova University, setting the ground for a long-standing and fruitful future collaboration. New Masters programme in Advanced Software Engineering with specialisation in Data Analytics
The Computer Science Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College is happy to announce the launch of a new programme recently added in its portfolio, the MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Data Analytics). This new specialisation is offered in response to the strong demand for expert knowledge in this field of Software Engineering. Due to the vast amount of business data being collected by organisations today, there is an increasing demand for specialists in data analytics, business intelligence and big data. Analysis of data can identify trends, patterns, and customer behaviour and reveal important information in order to support intelligent decision making and provide a competitive advantage in the modern globalised market. Big data introduces new challenges in the field of data analysis. This postgraduate course offers students advanced knowledge in software engineering and data analytics. Using a variety of teaching and assessment methods, it aims to produce students with the skills that are necessary to work as respected professionals in an industrial environment. The new programme is addressed to candidates who hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline. The programme will be taught in English and will be offered both in full-time and part-time mode, starting the academic in October 2018. Dr Dimitriadis delivers successful seminar on digital culture in Belgrade
Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Lecturer at our Executive MBA programme, delivered another successful seminar, in Belgrade this time, on ‘Digital Culture: The Missing Link in Digital Transformation?’. The event took place on 1 June 2018 in Belgrade. Dr Dimitriadis focused his presentation on the ‘digital transformation’ that is a main buzzword in business for the last few years. “Businesses, confused as ever, have been agonising about embracing digital technologies to serve customers better than competition. Related buzzwords like millennials and disruption made the whole situation even worse. Due to many unsuccessful projects in Digital Transformation, the focus in 2017 has shifted from Transformation itself to Digital Culture”, he said. Dr Dimitriadis, used neuroscience, business history and prediction theory to explain the situation and suggested suggest the best ways to move forward. Participants found the seminar particularly enlightening and commented positively on Dr Dimitriadis’ presentation skills.

Announcement of Extension of the Scholarships Deadline for students from Kosovo
Due to the high interest of candidates who wish to apply for a scholarship offered jointly by the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, we announce the extension of deadline for scholarships for Bachelors, Masters, and Executive MBA studies until Thursday, 21 June 2018, 16.00 o'clock. All applications for scholarships, accompanied by the required documents, must have reached the Ministry by this date and time. The deadline for applications for PhD studies is Friday, 29 June 2018, 16.00 o'clock.

Prof. Ketikidis re-elected Honorary Member of the Management Board of SEVE
Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty CITY College was reelected Honorary Member of the Management Board of the Greek International Business Association (SEVE). The newly elected Members of the Board hold top positions in the academia and industry. Apart from representing the administration of extrovert sectors of the Greek economy, SEVE aims at liaising with the academic and research community, a relationship that always proves mutually beneficial. The International Faculty is rather extrovert and highly involved in local and national organisations and associations, a practice that is inherent in our Faculty’s philosophy to liaise the academia with the industry and contribute the society overall.

Introducing our new Students’ Union Board (CSU) 2018-19
Like every year, the 2018 electoral period at the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, concluded with the election of four (4) Student Union Officers, elected by the entire student body at the Faculty’s main campus in Thessaloniki. Mr. Liassides delivers module on Marketing Communications in Kyiv
On 20 May 2018, Mr. Chris Liassides, Academic Director of Postgraduate Studies and Senior Lecturer at the International Faculty CITY College successfully delivered the third module of the Programme for Management Development that runs in collaboration with the European Business Association (EBA) in Kyiv. Mr. Liassides discussed the topic of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) which is vital for any business or organization in today’s corporate world and is directly linked to operational efficiency. During the module he addressed issues relating to IMC strategies and techniques that all contemporary marketers should adopt. As he explained to participants IMC is a simple concept which ensures that all forms of communications and messages are carefully linked together whilst ensuring the efforts of every stakeholder are aligned to the changing requirements within any market place. IMC solidifies communications around customers and helps them move through the various stages of the buying process. Participants found the IMC module particularly insightful and had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Liassides the effects that a well-executed IMC plan can have in a company. The ‘Programme for Management Development’ will be completed with 6 modules. The programme aims at equipping professionals with skills and knowledge, which are required for meeting companies’ strategic objectives; understanding business as an integrated system in the interrelationship of organizational, financial, marketing decisions aimed at increasing business competitiveness.
