Professor Ana Vivas at the 1st PanHellenic Conference in Neuropsychology in Athens

Professor Ana Vivas, Head of the Psychology Department of the International Faculty CITY College, attended the 1st PanHellenic Conference in Neuropsychology as an invited speaker in the Round table on "Education and neuropsychology". Professor Vivas presented the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology offered by the Department. Our alumna of the MA in Clinical Neuropsychology, also presented research work conducted as part of her practicum with Dr Anna Emmanouel, Lecturer at our Psychology Department. The Conference was attended by more than 600 people, which is evidence of the growing interest in Neuropsychology. Closing event for ‘Psychology for All’ series for academic year 2017-18

The closing event for this year’s ‘Psychology for All’ series for academic year 2017-2018 was a very interesting experiential workshop entitled ‘The shadows of our childhood’ by Mr Petros Theodorou, Psychotherapist, Member of EAGT, PSP©. The event took place on 27 April 2018 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. During his 2-hour presentation Mr Theodorou discussed how important it is to visit the place where the ‘inner child’ is hidden and to review childhood years, travelling back in time through cell memory. A long procedure of self-reflection and healing. The Psychology Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College has been running successfully since 2009 the ‘Psychology for All’ open seminar series at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The series hosts 1-hour talks by different guest speakers specialising in different psychology areas who share their knowledge and expertise. The ‘Psychology for All’ series takes place within the Department’s and the International Faculty’s public engagement activities aiming at giving back to the society and providing access to knowledge.

New 50+ Technology project to help seniors in embracing touchscreen technology

A new 50+ Hellas Technology project was launched recently, this time focusing on seniors’ education in touchscreen technology. Led by the founder Mr George Pavlidis, Lecturer at our Psychology Department and PhD Candidate in Gerontology, the programme aims at enhancing the digital integration of older people into modern communication and information methods, thus reduce the likelihood of social exclusion and loneliness at this age. This is achieved by helping seniors use technology and consequently embracing communication and information. Participants will learn to use tablet technologies, Internet use, e-mail, and social media as well as other applications that will make their daily lives easier in a rapidly changing world. Photo credits: THESSNEWS Mr Pavlidis said “The experience of ‘social exclusion’ can be painful". Perhaps this explains older peoples’ thirst to learn new technologies. The pleasant surprise is that "cyberseniors" are great students of new technology, as long as they are taught in a specific way. Classes must include fun, simplicity, structure, repetition, and positivity.”  As he describes, even for him it would be painful to live in a society where communication and information were based on technological media if he had no access to them. The team behind the project comprises our psychology postgraduate student, Georgia Papaioannou as well,  Lina Tzani, graduate from our Psychology Department and Ms Anna Paraschou, Agronomist at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The project is led by the founder Mr George Pavlidis, and supported by The Municipality of Thessaloniki, 50+ Hellas, and COSMOTE.

Opening of Photo Exhibition “A Journey into the Life of Yazidis in Greece”

On Monday, 23 April 2018 a successful opening took place for the photo exhibition ‘A Journey into the Life of Yazidis in Greece’ at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The event was co-organised by the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, the International Organization of Migration (Greece – IOM), the UN Migration Agency. The exhibition showcases a collection of photographs taken by Yazidis currently living at the Open Accommodation Center for Migrants and Refugees in Serres, giving visitors insights into the long history of this ethno-religious minority and their persecution. The photographs document in a unique way the daily lives of Yazidis as people who have been forced to flee, introducing them to the Greek audience and answering to the question “Who are the Yazidis?” At the opening of the event Ms Ioanna Kapnopoulou, Head of the Marketing, Communication and Student Recruitment Department of the International Faculty warmly welcomed all guests and briefly discussed the initiative of the photo exhibition, explaining that the aim was to raise awareness about the Yazidis, show how life is inside an accommodation center and present what is being done in order to providing adequate living standards and services to refugees. In the frame of the event Dr Alexandra Prodromidou presented the migration-related academic research conducted at the International Faculty the past years. Following Dr Prodromidou, Ms Christina Nikolaidou, Director of Communications at IOM who talked about the efforts of the Organisation to reduce the effects of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Greece with funding from the European Commission, providing useful statistics and insights. However, the main speaker of the event was Ms Nadia Bashar, 28, from the Yazidi community who whole-heartedly shared her story with the visitors of the exhibition and talked about all the hardships and the suffering the Yazidis are going thought. Her words were particularly moving. The audience had the opportunity to ask Ms Bashar a few questions. The peak moment of the event was when Ms Bashar sang a beautiful Yazidi song. Event participants reported that they were very impressed both by the photo exhibition and the event. The photo exhibition will run until 14 May while at the same time items are being collected at our main campus for the Yazidis living at the Accommodation Center of Serres, in order to cover their needs.

Second unit of the Programme for Management Development by Mr Lambridis in Kyiv

On 22 April 2018 the second unit of the recently launched Programme for Management Development was successfully delivered to our new group of students by Mr. Nikos Lambridis, Head MBA student Coach for Career and Professional Development at our Executive MBA programme. The programme is run by the University of Sheffield International Faculty for the for the European Business Association (EBA) members jointly with ΕΒΑ. In his dynamic presentation οn Authentic Leadership, Mr Lambridis discussed one of the challenges of our times for authentic leaders saying that they need to develop followers in a manner that utilises our knowledge of mirror neurons, including acting as a mentor, being visible as a role model and coach. At the same time they need to use salient visual, auditory and written information to communicate expectations and vision. He also went on to outline the potential contribution of Neuroleadership to increased insight and understanding of authentic leadership, including the future development of leaders as to greater authenticity and self-awareness. Participants found the second unit particularly interesting and engaging.  The ‘Programme for Management Development’ will be completed with 6 modules. The programme aims at equipping professionals with skills and knowledge, which are required for meeting companies’ strategic objectives; understanding business as an integrated system in the interrelationship of organizational, financial, marketing decisions aimed at increasing business competitiveness.

Executive MBA Annual Study Week 2018 in Thessaloniki

During 14-21 April 2018 we welcomed at our main campus in Thessaloniki all our 2nd year Executive MBA students from the six cities (Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Bucharest, Sofia, Kyiv, Yerevan) who participated in this year’s amazing MBA Study Week. As always, the study week comprised classes, seminars, lots of networking, guest lectures, free time and exciting outings.   Specialised Units The study week kicked off with students attending the first track units of the MBA specialization they have chosen and gaining insights in the one of the six (6) specialized areas of the MBA (i.e. General Management, Marketing, Finance, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Healthcare Management, Human Resources Management).   10th International Strategic People Management Workshop The 10th International Strategic People Management Workshop took place within the MBA Annual Study Week in Thessaloniki. On 18 April 2018 the Laboratory for Strategic People Management successfully organized the Workshop entitled 'Promoting Sustainable Performance through People’. Prior to the workshop students undertook an analysis of their current company and were presented with a diagnostic of their company which then formed the basis for the workshop run by Dr. Szamosi and Dr. Gkikas. This is part of an ongoing series of activities related to SMEs and people management in the region.   Risk Management Workshop ‘Risk Management: A way to avoid Crisis Management and Management of Losses’ was the title of the workshop led by Mr Athanasios Fourtounas, Economist and Director of Logistics in JLSG NATO (Italy), on 17th of April 2018 within the frame of the MBA Annual Study Week. He was also a member of the judge panel at the MBA student pitch session.   Boat cruise in Thermaikos Gulf The Annual Study Week is scheduled to combines work and pleasure. The scheduled boat trip in Thermaikos Gulf was a pleasant escape from classes for our MBA students. Our students enjoyed the beautiful city view of Thessaloniki while sailing. Risk Management Workshop at the MBA Study Week in Thessaloniki

‘Risk Management: A way to avoid Crisis Management and Management of Losses’ was the title of the workshop led by Mr Athanasios Fourtounas, Economist and Director of Logistics in JLSG NATO (Italy), on 17th of April 2018 within the frame of the MBA Annual Study Week. During our workshop, participants were familiarised with all the processes of Risk Management during a project through a detailed and realistic scenario. Students first analysed their Project Charter and were then separated into teams to identify the stakeholders of the Project. The next step was the composition of a Risk Management Plan which was followed by the identification of opportunities and threats of the project. Then, MBA participants discussed the analysis of the identified risks through Qualitative methods so as to prioritize Opportunities and Threats. The workshop came to an end with the identification of risk responses and suggested ways monitoring our risks during the execution of the project. The smiling faces at the end of the workshop were the evidence that objective was accomplished and knowledge was gained! Mr Fourtounas commented: “The current business climate is increasingly uncertain and companies need their employees to be competent, efficient and knowledgeable when it comes to managing Opportunities and Threats. Every employee needs to ensure he or she is up-to-date on international standards and best practice required to effectively mitigate threats and capitalise on opportunities to save company’s time and money.”

Blood Donation Day 2018 at the International Faculty

Students and staff of the International Faculty gave blood to give life on the Blood Donation Day that took place on the 26th of April 2018 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Organised by the Student Services and Alumni Department together with our Students’ Union (CSU) the blood donation took place in support of the International Faculty’s blood bank. The blood donation was facilitated by the Ippokrateio Blood Donation Mobile Unit that visited our campus for this cause. The International Faculty warmly thanks and congratulates all staff and students that participated in the Blood Donation, helped save lives and contributed to the goal for the needed amount for the blood bank to be met.

Ms Anna Sotiriadou receives Senate Award by the University of Sheffield

Ms Anna Sotiriadou Warm congratulations are in order for Ms Anna Sotiriadou, Head of the Computer Science Department, on receiving the 2017/18 Senate Award for Sustained Excellence in Learning and Teaching by the University of Sheffield. This award comes in recognition of Ms Sotiriadou’s exceptional work and dedication to excellence in learning and teaching, through her years of service at the International Faculty, as well as, her commitment to lead and inspire her co-workers. She is the driving force behind the sustained high quality and novelty of the Computer Science Department's programmes and a role model of a colleague. Her unparalleled gift for bringing people together is matched by her passion for establishing authentic, meaningful and engaging Learning and Teaching experiences for students. Ms Anna Sotiriadou The Senate Awards Scheme particularly rewards staff members of the University of Sheffield who demonstrate an exceptional contribution in the area of learning and teaching and thus support and enhance the student learning experience. Senate Award recipients become a “Senate Fellow” for life. This is the third Award in the particular category for the International Faculty, after Dr George Eleftherakis and Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou awarding and the fourth overall for our Faculty together with Prof. Kefalas’ Senate Award for Leadership in Learning and Teaching in 2016/17. The International Faculty, CITY College, takes pride in Ms Sotiriadou’s achievement.
