Antena Media Group welcomes our postgraduate students in Bucharest
On 9 March 2018 a group of postgraduate students attending the MA in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations in Bucharest visited one of the leading media agencies in Romania, Antena Media Group. Escorted by Dr Ana Cruz, year students were warmly welcomed by the host, Ms Crenguta Chiriac, Marketing Corporate Communications Director, Intact Media Group,, who talked to them about strategic issues, the latest developments in media and how the communications and marketing department of a major media group operates. The students were particularly interested by the presentation and the impressive premises of Antena Media Group. During the visit they also were benefited from the exposure to a real workplace environment. Educative and insightful, the company visit was part of the Advertising and Sales Promotion Management unit led by Dr. Cruz in Bucharest. Several company visits take place in parallel to classes aiming at enhancing the richness of their industry interactions and preparing students to enter the job market.

‘Brain-based techniques for leaders’ workshop by Mr Lambridis in Yerevan
On the 6th of March, Mr Nikos Lambridis, Head Coach at our Executive MBA programme, delivered a successful seminar in Yerevan entitled ‘Brain-Based techniques for leaders, linked with effective decisions and outcomes’. The event took place in the frame of the Open Days in Yerevan at the Marriott Hotel. Mr Lambridis highlighted the need for leaders to adapt to changes swiftly in order to avoid stagnation, miss an opportunity for innovation and growth or even become incapacitated. “If you are a successful business person, chance are that you’ve found a formula of behaviors that work to achieve the results you want. But when the results start to alter, the old formula can’t be repeated; a new formula for success must be calculated. If the internal drivers, outcomes or environment have changed, then it’s time to adapt” he said. In his presentation he explained to participants how they can examine what holds them back, by sharpening their self-awareness, focus on the here-and-now, and finally understand the value of “holding back” their emotions. The seminar was well-attended by managers and business professionals who found the newly introduced topic of Neuroleadership particularly interesting.

Project Risk Management course for our Business Students
Third year bachelors students from the Business Administration and Economics Department of the International Faculty CITY College had the opportunity to attend a course on ‘Project Risk Management’ and get valuable insights from the unit leader, Mr. Athanasios Fourtounas Trainer, Economist and Director of Logistics in JLSG NATO (Italy). In this workshop-based course, Mr. Fourtounas discussed the principles and the procedures of Project Risk Management in business world according to PMI standards. During the first 2 days of the workshop, in addition to the theoretical knowledge participants also examined a number of real case studies but also a full scenario of a project where they executed the processes of Identify Stakeholders, How to create a Risk Management Plan and How to Identify Risks. The students had the opportunity to work in teams create a Risk Management plan which they presented at the conclusion of the workshop. The course proved to be an exceptional learning experience for our students.

SEERC's award-winning environmental sustainability expertise
The South East European Research Centre (SEERC) has been recently acclaimed at the 5th Ajman International Environment Conference on Climate Change and Sustainability (United Arab Emirates, 6th - 7th March 2018) by being awarded a conference participation grant in order to show-case expertise on sustainable transportation decision-making in the context of smart cities. The work has been developed by Dr Adrian Solomon, Project Manager at SEERC and Lecturer at the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in collaboration with Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal, University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and aims at providing policy guidelines for industries and local governmental bodies in terms of ensuring proper implementation of sustainable transportation strategies. This expertise was also previously show-cased at the 14th International Technology, Knowledge and Society Conference (1-2 March 2018, New York, USA). All these efforts are also tangent with SEERC's efforts to develop the Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre (AREC) Europe's efforts and ensure proper knowledge and technology transfer to the regional and global industry (USA, UK, Europe and Asia).

Neuromarketing Seminar by Dr Dimitriadis in Lviv
On 23 February 2018 Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Lecturer and the International Faculty CITY College, delivered another insightful seminar on his favourite topic: Neuromarketing. Entitled ‘Neuromarketing: truths and myths about the brain’ the well-attended seminar took place in the frame of the collaboration between the International Faculty CITY College and EBA. In his presentation Dr Dimitriadis broke a series of misunderstandings and myths concerning our brain, explained the brain approach to marketing and sales and explored how branding really works within the brain. He also presented a comprehensive model for applying brain-based marketing aiming at making participants ‘marketing-smarter’ and achieve better results. The seminar was one of the many events organised by the International Faculty in Ukraine.

English Studies Dept. Staff, Students and Graduates meet at the 25th Annual International TESOL Macedonia-Thrace Northern Greece Conference
The English Studies Department was actively represented by both students and Lecturers in the 25th Annual International TESOL Macedonia Thrace Northern Greece Conference, held on 23-25 February 2018. On Saturday, 24/02, Dr Luke Prodromou, one of the invited Plenary Speakers, delivered his session entitled "Top Ten Secrets of Effective Teaching" in which he reported on a life-long search for the good language teacher and on recent research into effective teaching practice. Some of the questions Dr Prodromou attempted to address were "What exactly do expert teachers do?" and "What kind of relationships do they encourage in the classroom?" By tracing his own journey both as a learner and teacher, he concluded that although certain qualities or characteristics of the effective teacher seem to have emerged through the years, the role of the effective teacher is constantly shaped through an ongoing process of personal and professional development. Dr Prodromou's follow-up session was a performance with his brainchild, the English Language Theatre, during which attendees had the chance to watch the members of the theatre group perform along with two more of the Conference's plenary speakers, Agapi Dendaki and Michael Robbs. The performance entitled "Ladies in Love and Marriage" consisted of five sketches inspired by the work of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, on the theme of women in love and the delights and disappointments of marriage. Apart from Dr Prodromou, the Department was also represented by Ms Margarita Kosior who delivered on the same date her session entitled "Difficult topics made easy with film." Ms Kosior focused on how film, in both its broader sense of the motion picture as well as in the form of short, inspirational videos, can be used as a tool through which global issues can be approached in the classroom setting. As Ms Kosior demonstrated, this can be achieved due to the audiovisual nature and authentic appeal of films themselves which allow real life to immerse in the classroom and provide a context in which language learning takes place more effortlessly, difficult issues are discussed with more confidence and ease, and student motivation and engagement increase. On the same date, conference participants also had the opportunity to attend sessions delivered by the Department's MA students. Erëza Mehmeti's session "Practical Application of Game-Based Learning: Play. Learn. Grow." underlined the significance of game-based learning in the creation of a comfortable class environment as it provides multiple opportunities to learners to acquire knowledge. Ms. Mehmeti's session also offered practical suggestions on how game-based learning can be implemented in the ELT classroom. Rina Krasniqi invited us all to overcome our feelings of stress and anxiety during our first week of classes in her session "Let's Ice-break." In her inspiring workshop, Ms. Krasniqi demonstrated a series of carefully chosen icebreakers which participants could use with students of different ages and levels. As Ms Krasniqi noted, apart from being interesting and fun, the icebreakers presented were sure to create a positive learning environment and help build rapport with students. Last but definitely not least, Ms. Maria Gourmou presented a talk entitled "Teaching English to young learners in Greece: Obstacles and Practical Solutions." In an attempt to explain how obstacles can be overcome in a young learner teaching context, Ms. Gourmou first presented the attributes of young learners before moving on to suggesting practical solutions all teachers can use. As Ms. Gourmou remarked her hope is that the suggestions and ideas offered in her session will inspire more English language teachers to take on the challenge of teaching young learners in the future. The English Studies Department could not feel prouder and warmly congratulates all its members for their amazing and thought-provoking presentations!!!

Paper co-authored by Dr. Lagkas among the most downloaded at IET Networks
The paper entitled “Hybrid 5G optical-wireless SDN-based networks, challenges and open issues” that was co-authored by Dr. Thomas Lagkas, Lecturer at the Computer Science Department of the International Faculty, CITY College, is among the most downloaded papers of the IET Networks Journal. The specific paper, which focuses on a set of critical challenges in advancing 5G networks through network function virtualization and software defined radio techniques, was published in August 2017 and in short time entered the journal’s list of most downloaded papers. The International Faculty warmly congratulates Dr Lagkas on this achievement.

Successful seminar on Neuropsychology by Dr Anna Emmanouel in Skopje
On Saturday, 24 February 2018 a seminar on Neuropsychology organised by the Psychology Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College took place successfully, introducing students to the fundamentals of neuropsychology, a novel topic for them. The event was well-organised in cooperation with the psychology students’ association, PSIHESKO. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Anna Emmanouel, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Lecturer at the Psychology Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield. During her insightful presentation Dr. Emmanouel shared her experience, while participants expressed great interest showing that neuropsychology is a promising and very interesting topic. The seminar comprised two parts. The first part was on cognitive neuroscience, its aims, advanced neuroimaging methods that are used to define brain pathology as well as differentiations in brain pathology between different types of dementias and how this is reflected on patients' neuropsychological profile in different stages of the disease. The second part was on clinical neuropsychology, that is application of this knowledge into clinical practice, emphasis was given on the methods that clinical neuropsychologists use to measure brain dysfunction in patients with acquired brain damage, the psychometric properties of these methods and the contribution of the neuropsychological assessment outcome to set treatment goals and apply interventions adjusted to patients' needs and difficulties. During the lectures, many videos were presented, introducing participants in the newness of neuroscience and cases of brain-injured patients with great research and clinical interest. The seminar was open to the public and was just one of the many events organised by the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield in Skopje, aiming at disseminating knowledge, often in cooperation with a large number of local institutions and organisations.
