Insightful presentations at the ‘Psychology for all’ series
Two insightful talks were presented in February by distinguished Psychologists who joined as guest lectures the ‘Psychology for all’ series that continues to be offered by our Psychology Department at our main campus on Thessaloniki. A talk on ‘Science or Psychotherapy’ took place 2 February with Mr. George Giaglis, MD, MSc, PhD, Specialist Neurologist, Psychologist and Gestalt Psychotherapist and Mr Rama Sadmon, Social and Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist & Gestalt Supervisor delivering a joint presentation and attempting to pinpoint the relation between the two as well as the difference. The International Faculty was also honoured to host for a second time Ms Katia Hatzilakou, M.Sc. Clinical & Social Psychology (A.U.Th.). Gestalt Psychotherapist, Trainer & Supervisor, member of EAGT (ex-Chair of NOGT and External Relation of EAGT) and the National Psychotherapy Company of Greece as well as ECP holder (European Certificate of Psychotherapy) and Founding member of the Hellenic Association for Gestalt Therapy (HAGT) who presented an interesting topic on self-esteem entitled “What holds me back is who I think I am not, rather than who I really am … the process to self-esteem.” Ms Hatzilakou explained that our beliefs of what people think they cannot do or things they think they are not worth are in fact the reasons they have low self-esteem and fail to see their worth and succeed. Both events were well-attended, giving the opportunity to participants to reflect on the topics presented and discuss with the speakers.

International Faculty alumnus elected ‘Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year 2017’
Warm congratulations to our alumnus, Mr. Dimitrios Lakasas, CEO and Managing Director of Olympia Electronics, who was recently elected "Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year 2017’ by the EY Year Award 2017, after competing with other eminent businessmen. Competition candidates who were distinguished for their entrepreneurial spirit, strategic orientation, innovation and the social impact were selected by an independent nine-member jury, under the chairmanship of Mr. Spyros Theodoropoulos, CEO of Chipita SA and winner of the Greek Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 competition. The entrepreneurs who were elected in the individual categories will be awarded and will claim the title "Entrepreneur of the Year" 2017 at an official ceremony which will be held on Tuesday 27 March 2018. The winner will represent Greece at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in Monte Carlo next June. Mr Dimitrios Lakasas, is a graduate of the Business Administration and Economics Department of the International Faculty CITY College. He is a distinguished entrepreneur and members of numerous associations. He is actively involved in the Greek business sector. He was awarded the ‘National Business Excellence Award’ in 2007 and has also received the ‘Most Influential Business Manager’ Award in 2004 by ECO Q. His most important achievement was the strategic partnership with the American giant Honeywell. In 2011, at the peak of the Greek economic crisis he took over as new Chairman and Managing Director of Olympia Electronics S.A. The International Faculty is proud of Mr Lakasas and congratulates him on winning a well-deserved award, a true recognition of his great work and contribution. Our Psychology Department mourns the loss of two great Psychologists
The Psychology Department of the International Faculty CITY College would like to share the sad news of two Psychology giants who passed away in the last days. Anne Treisman, a British Psychologist who made major contributions to the understanding of attention and perception and Erik Erikson who is best-known for his famous theory of psychosocial development and the concept of the identity crisis. Prof. Ketikidis participates as speaker in the WBAF 2018 in Istanbul
Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty CITY College, has been invited to participated as speaker in the World Business Angels Investment Forum 2018 which took place 18-20 February 2018 in Istanbul. At the event, Prof. Ketikidis successfully delivered a speech on 'Fireside Chat: The Altuntas Start-up Compass Theory: An entrepreneurial road map to success from start-up to scale-up to exit' and also moderated the Panel 23 on 'Regional focus: Financing innovation through impact investment in South East Europe'. It is worth noting that Prof. Ketikidis is the High Commissioner of WBAF for Greece. IT Poster Exhibition and Competition by our Business Students
For the second year in a row a Poster Exhibition took place at our main campus in Thessaloniki, with second level business students participating and showcasing a creative series of posters on a range of IT-related topics. Themed ‘Decision Making with IT’ exhibition was organised in the frame of the homonymous unit (Decision Making with Technology) led by Dr Andrew Salisbury. Participating students were given themes from the class syllabus and asked to prepare an A1 poster and present it in class. The exhibition aimed at helping students learn and recycle the material from the exam and also to learn how to design informative posters for company presentations. The posters were displayed in the Auditorium, and many students and staff took the opportunity to visit the exhibition and admire our students’ work. Two leading IT companies StoneWave and 3DS were invited to judge the posters based on their own unique professional experience and chose the competition winners. Overall company representatives were impressed by our students’ creativity, ideas and professional approach. Competition Winning team Dimos Nikolaou Spyridon Chaidemenos Christos Chalevas Competition winners received their certificates and awards from Mr Iraklis Velissaridis, ELT Consultant at Express Publishing and Mr Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre. In addition to certificates winners also received a presentation skills book from Express Publishing that supported this venture.

New project on Women Pioneers of Neuroscience in Europe recommended by our Psychology Department
The Psychology Department of the International Faculty CITY College highly recommends the new European History project "Untold Stories: the Women Pioneers of Neuroscience in Europe" from the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. The project presents the stories of seven women who worked during the first half of twentieth century and made relevant contributions to many fields of the modern neuroscience. Lecturers of the English Studies Department contribute articles to the Feb. 2018 Issue of Humanising Language Teaching
It was with great sense of accomplishment that the Chairperson of the local Teachers’ Association TESOL Macedonia-Thrace, Northern Greece, Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian announced on social media, on Sunday 4th February 2018, the release of the Association’s first hosted issue (Year 20, Issue 1) of Humanising Language Teaching —the online magazine published by Pilgrims, under the supervision of Editor and ELT expert Ms. Hanna Kryszewska. The English Studies Department of the International Faculty CITY College has every reason to share this joy, as six academic staff members of the Department have contributed with articles, while two of these Lecturers were also on the Editorial Committee; Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian, Chairperson of the Association and Ms. Maria Theologidou, General Secretary and Editor-in-chief of the TESOL MTh E-Bulletin ELTeaser, were at the helm of the endeavour. Among the papers reviewed and selected for publication in Humanising Language Teaching (Feb. 1018 issue), one may find the following: Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Studies Dept., contributed an article on her area of specialisation, i.e. Lexicography, entitledReviving Lexicography through Text Corpora. Dr. Luke Prodromou, Lecturer on the MA programme, participated with an article entitled Ten Secrets of Effective Language Teaching. Ms. Margarita Kosior, MA Lecturer, wrote a review on The Image in English Language Teaching edited by Kieran Donaghy and Daniel Xerri, while Ms. Maria Theologidou focused on The Power of Student-centered Environments: Steps towards Creating Student-driven Learning Spaces. Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian wrote an article based on a project done in class, entitled Teachers and Schools through the Eyes of Students. Last but not least, Ms. Despina Sarantidou, also an ESD Lecturer, contributed an article entitled Implementation of Collaborative Group Projects with Students of Different Ages and Language Levels: A Suggestion. TESOL Macedonia-Thrace, Northern Greece is actively supported by the English Studies Department of The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. CITY College completes training programme for refugees on Translation and Interpreting in cooperation with Terre des hommes
In the spirit of its commitment to Public Engagement and its profile as a socially responsible institution, CITY College proudly participated in a global effort, initiated by the international NGO Terre des hommes, to provide educational opportunities to refugees around the world. As part of that effort, last Thursday (February 1st, 2018) marked the completion of a 25-hour training programme in “Translation and Interpreting” for refugees, through a ceremony for the awarding of Certificates to the beneficiaries.The course took place with the support of Swiss Solidarity and provided participants with the opportunity to enhance their skills while seeking integration into the labour market as Cultural Mediators. Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Studies Dept. and Mr Michalis Naris, Social Educator at Terre des hommes The two-month training course was specifically designed and offered by the English Studies Department of CITY College to 15 refugee participants over the age of twenty. The aim of this course was to sharpen the participants’ translation and interpreting skills, as many of them will seek to function as “cultural mediators”. The two ESD Lecturers, who delivered with great success the above teaching sessions, were Dr Kelly Pasmatzi and Dr Eleftheria Tsirakoglou. International Faculty alumna delivers successful presentation at the TEDxSevan event in Armenia
Congratulations to our alumna, Ms Arevik Hayrapetyan, on delivering a very successful talk at the TEDxSevan event in Armenia entitled "The Magic of Self Leadership". In her talk Ms. Arevik Hayrapetyan shared the stereotypes she had to fight and challenges she went through as a female social entrepreneur in Armenia. She also uncovered her own recipe for success. Watch Arevik’s talk on Youtube [in Armenian] Connecting this experience with her student experience as speaker at the Student Spring Symposium 2015 of the International Faculty CITY Arevik said: “As I reflect back, I see a lot of interesting connections between my winning speech at Student Spring Symposium 2015 at the International Faculty CITY College and my speech at TEDx. As Steve Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” And I do feel that the dots connect so well here.” Arevik is a graduate of the MA in Marketing, Advertising & Public Relations. The International Faculty warmly congratulates Arevik on her achievement! About TEDxSevan event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDxSevan was officially licensed by TED and was a programme of local, self-organized event that brought people together to share a TED-like experience. At TEDxSevan event speakers shared their stories about facing and coping with stereotypes, inequalities and discrimination, as well as brought different perspectives on the topic of diversity. All TEDxSevan speeches were delivered in Armenian.

Successful three-day training to MTel managers by Mr Liassides in Bulgaria
On 6, 7, and 8 February 2018, Mr Chris Liassides, Senior Lecturer at the Business Department of the International Faculty delivered a three-day training seminar to a selected number of employees and managers of Mobitel (Mtel) in Sofia, Bulgaria. The trainees are part of the prestigious Talent's Club of the Bulgarian telecommunications company in question and the training was focused on strategic matters, entitled "Business Environment and Strategy". The trainees were eager to learn and appreciated very much the skills and knowledge that was delivered to them, in an effort to enhance their managerial potential. The successful seminar concluded with very positive feedback about the planning, organisation, as well as the delivery of the content of the specific topic. Congratulations to all the parties involved.
