Computer Science student presents paper at the 17th Balkan Mineral Processing Congress in Turkey
Congratulations to our final year Computer Science student from Kosovo, Rina Basholli, on successfully presenting a paper at the 17th Balkan Mineral Processing Congress held in Antalya, Turkey, 1-3 November 2017. The Balkan Mineral Processing Congress (BMPC) an event that takes part every year, hosted by different countries trying to represent a technical platform for the safe and sustainable future of the mining and mineral processing industries in Balkan countries. Selected experts of the field – Rina being among them - are invited from the Balkan and non-Balkan countries such as: Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, USA, Russia, Brazil, Jordan, Algeria etc. to deliver a speech on particular areas of the field tackling a specific problem and possibly suggest a sustainable solution. Representing Kosovo, Rina presented a paper she co-authored and has been accepted for publication titled “Optimization of the processes with Newton Algorithm”. The paper presented the practical performance of achieving the optimum reagent regime by applying the Newton’s mathematical algorithm for solving problems of nonlinear equations. Rina’s contribution to the paper, apart the calculations conducted, was also to bargain the appropriate software engineering process and methods towards completing the particular software in the near future. “Besides of having the opportunity to meet many experts of the field, it was a great pleasure for me to be given the chance of delivering a speech on the possibility of Kosova’s Coal Processing”, Rina commented adding: “The diverse background provided from the professors of the department of Computer Science at the International Faculty CITY College has had a huge impact on the preparation of the paper. The calculations made were nothing but an expansion towards the specific field of the things we’ve already learnt and practiced at the Computer Science department. It was an excellent opportunity to actually put that knowledge on practice and gain impactful results out of it. I think that apart from my knowledge on the field a huge impact has had my involvement in many self-expressing, creative, leadership and organisational activities at the International Faculty, such as Students Spring Symposium, where I was leading the technical team last year and the Startify7 Summer Academy for Entrepreneurship as the final winner in Summer 2016.” The paper is already published in the 17th BMPC Proceedings book and soon will also be published online. The Congress brought together a large number of senior officials from Turkey and many other countries as well as the authorities from the companies that are operating in the mining and mineral processing industry in order to create an opportunity to evaluate the future of the sector.

Business students visit Thessaloniki’s Courthouse
On 16 November 2017 students from our Business Administration & Economics Department went on a field trip to Thessaloniki’s Courthouse in the context of the ‘Introduction to Law’ unit, led by Ms Tania Mavridou. During the visit at Thessaloniki's Courthouse the students attended a criminal trial process which was a useful experience as it allowed them to understand how the law works in practice. Watching an economic crime case (fraud) from beginning to the delivery of the judges' verdict, the students gained an insight into the process that is applied in criminal legal cases. The court visit also gave the students the opportunity to have a better understanding of the different roles and responsibilities of the individuals involved in the proceedings.

Executive MBA Induction Days 2017
The Executive MBA Induction Days marked the beginning of academic year 2017-18 for our Executive MBA programme. The induction days have been designed to provide a gateway to the MBA programme and prepare students for their studies. Our MBA students in all countries where the programme is offered, had the opportunity to meet their classmates and some of their lecturers and prepare themselves for the academic year ahead. During the Induction Day students also engaged in interactive educational activities in order to strengthen their team spirit, an essential skill for their progress in the programme. In all seven countries Induction Days were followed by the first weekend classes for this academic year. Executive MBA Induction in Bucharest
Induction Day for our Executive MBA programme was successfully held in Bucharest 16 November 2017. Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the programme warmly welcomed all new students and guided them through the Induction. Mr Adam Sambrook, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Bucharest and Mr Kevin McLaven, Director of English Language Services at the British Council in Bucharest honoured the event with their presence and addresses a short welcome to our students. Mr. Sambrook and Mr. Mclaven congratulated the new Executive MBA students for choosing this programme, but also for being accepted to study for a prestigious Top 100 World University, the University of Sheffield. They both put particular emphasis on the benefits of studying in the British educational system and the amazing opportunities that await them after successfully graduating from the programme. Ms Claudia Tudor, MBA alumnus who recently graduated with distinction from our Executive MBA programme, also joined the event and shared her MBA experience together with extremely useful advice on how to combine a full time job and studying at the University of Sheffield MBA programme. She encouraged the students to always discuss with their professors and ask questions in the classroom in order to make the most of their study time. Most importantly, she shared with the new students how the programme changed her perception about each business discipline and how she put into practice the newly acquired knowledge. Overall, it was a successful Induction, leaving the students motivated and fully prepared to begin their studies. The International Faculty has been offering the prestigious Executive MBA programe in Bucharest since 2006, educating business leaders from many big companies and organization across Romania. PhD Candidate and alumna wins the Champion’s Belt at The Tech Off during MADE17 Festival in Sheffield
Congratulations to Ms Tanja Kuzman, alumna of the International Faculty CITY College and PhD Candidate at our research centre, SEERC, on winning the Champion’s belt at The Tech Off event that took place during MADE17 Entrepreneur Festival in Sheffield, UK! MADE is the UK’s premier business event for entrepreneurship and offers a brand new experience to educate, inspire and motivate early stage entrepreneurs and established business owners. The Tech Off has been called “the love-child of TED talks and WWE” and it represents a battle of ideas about a predetermined tech related topic. Tanja was one of the five competitors who had strictly 5 minutes to present their ideas about "The Future of Work" and wow the crowd. The audience chose the winner, and Tanja got to take away the coveted ‘Belt of Tech’! This achievement has another dimension since the audience comprised of entrepreneurs, venture capital representatives, startups and experts. Tanja’s presentation was warmly cheered by the audience. "I had an opportunity to participate at The Tech Off as part of MADE17 and I walked away as a winner with the champion's belt!", said Tanja In her own words The Tech Off is an event that takes boundaries further away from anything expected and has no similarities with other tech events. "The crowd reacts to everything you say and each of the speakers is definitely taken out of their comfort zone. So it was a challenge and I just knew I have to do it!", Tanja explained. This was the first time she spoke about the idea she has been developing for a while. "It was such a rewarding experience to share my thoughts on how technology will change the work as we know it and how a perfect digital personal assistant with an attitude looks like. But most importantly I had a chance to share my idea on how a combination of Artificial Intelligence, Voice and Holograms could change medicine. The win just confirmed that my idea has a potential to become something more than just an idea. Big thank you goes to other participants for a great battle of ideas and inspiration", said Tanja Tanja's invitation to represent Campus Capital, a venture capital fund, at The Tech Off came from Daniel Kirby, Co-Founder and CEO of Techdept, and Samantha Deakin Hill, Co-founder of Campus Capital. Tanja Kuzman is from Serbia and she graduated from the International Faculty CITY College with a Masters Degree with Distinction in Banking and Finance and a BA from the Faculty of Economics, Finance and Administration. In May 2014, she was proclaimed as one of the 100 Leaders of Tomorrow of the whole world at the St. Gallen Symposium of Leaders of Today and Leaders of Tomorrow. Currently, Tanja is working on her PhD entitled "The effects of political interference on financial and economic performance of SOEs" and she is a student VC at Campus Capital. The International Faculty CITY College warmly congratulates Tanja and takes pride in her achievement.

Guest Lecture by Athenian Brewery representative
On 8 November 2017, the International Faculty CITY College had the pleasure to host a guest lecture under the umbrella of “Sales Management” unit, from Athenian Brewery SA. The guest speaker Mr Nikos Koufokotsios, Wholesales’ Key Account Representative at Athenian Brewery SA, gave a keynote speech on sales techniques and operations. During his presentation he shared experience on everyday activities and cooperation with other company departments. More specifically the speaker thoroughly addressed how their sales department actually operates, intradepartmental communication and also problems that a company faces along the way. The students were very interested in his speech and after the conclusion of his presentation they had the opportunity to address many questions to the guest speaker. Guest lectures are a vital part of the educational process at the International Faculty and serve as a way to enrich our students with the latest industry updates while at the same time bring in the classroom insights from the real business world.

Executive MBA Induction 2017 in Thessaloniki
Academic year 2017-18 successfully commenced for our Executive MBA programme in Thessaloniki with the MBA Induction on 9 November 2017. Dr. Megaklis Petmezas, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, Mr. George Efstathiadis, Director of the MBA programme, warmly welcomed all students and wished them a successful academic year. In his turn, Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the MBA programme, welcomed the students and led an introductory session focusing on the main attributes and structure of the programme. In the context of the Induction, Ms Flery Agiou, Executive MBA alumna, held a short presentation entitled 'Sharing my Learning Experience' and talked to the new Executive MBA students in Thessaloniki about her EMBA experience highlighting the impact her career. The students found this presentation particularly helpful. The MBA Induction has been designed to provide a gateway to the MBA programme and prepare students for their studies. The MBA Induction was followed by the delivery of the first unit on the MBA course on ‘Understanding Organizational Behaviour’. Our MBA programme is the only truly international MBA programme running successfully in the region of South East and Eastern Europe more than 20 years now. Today, except for Thessaloniki, it is also delivered in Sofia (Bulgaria), Belgrade (Serbia), Bucharest (Romania), Kyiv (Ukraine), Yerevan (Armenia) and Tbilisi (Georgia). Chick-Fil-A returns to the International Faculty for a Successful Business Seminar on Leadership
The Chik-Fil-A team revisited the International Faculty CITY College to deliver another successful business seminar under the title “A pathway to successful leadership: The SERVE leadership Model, CSR & Sustainability aspects”. The event was hosted at the International Faculty’s main campus in Thessaloniki, 6 November 2017. For one more year a Chick-Fil-A team visited the International Faculty to present their leadership model, SERVE The five speakers, some of them representing the company and some being restaurant owners, spoke on “The Secret of Great Leaders” and presented Chick-Fil-A SERVE model. More specifically as identified by the its acronym, the speakers shared their views on how great leaders Sea and shape the future, Engage and develop others, Reinvent continuously, Value results and relationships and Embody the values. There was also thorough presentation of their business strategy through videos and interactive Q&As. The company’s competitive advantage is their organisational culture that holds on to their “Our Pleasure” approach. The speakers also focused on their CSR practices with specific examples on local ownerships and support of local communities, donations to different organizations, recycling and the gradual transformation of their products to organic ones. Before closing the event, the speakers invited the students (2nd level business students attending the event in the frame of ‘Sustainable Development’ unit) to ask their questions and those who did were also rewarded with company gifts. It is the seventh time for the International Faculty to host the Chick Fil A leadership seminar. The event was organised by the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) and the Career, Enterprise and Employability Centre of the International Faculty and is in line with our mission to bring academia closer to the industry. Founded in May 1946, it has more than 2,000 restaurants, mainly in the southeastern United States. Executive MBA Induction in Kyiv
The MBA Induction Day on 9 November 2017 marked the commencement of the academic year 2017-18 for the Executive MBA programme offered by the International Faculty CITY College in Kyiv. The Director of the programme, Mr. George Efstathiadis, opened the Induction Day and welcomed all our new MBA students in Kyiv. Ms. Cathy Cottrell, First Secretary Energy Policy and Head of Commercial Sector at British Embassy in Kyiv, also honoured the event with her presence and welcomed our new students on behalf of British Ambassador wishing them a successful academic year ahead. In the context of the Induction Day our alumnus Mr. Artur Zagorodnikov, Deputy Chairman of First Ukrainian International Bank, shared his Executive MBA experience, spoke about his study years with at the International Faculty and shared valuable advice with our new students. Induction was followed by the delivery of the first unit of the MBA programme on ‘Developing Market Presence’ by Mr Chris Liassidis. Our MBA programme has been running successfully in Kyiv since 2010 attracting entrepreneurs and professionals from various business sectors. A great start for the Professional Skills Seminar Series of the Computer Science Department
Mr Leonard Shtika The Computer Science launched this year’s Professional Skills Seminar Series with two insightful seminars. The series kicked off on 19 October 2017 with a seminar on ‘Website boost with SEO’ by Mr Leonard Shtika, Software Engineer at Tessera Multimedia and Google Analytics Certified Expert. Mr Shtika shared his expertise and explained how a search engine works today, elaborated on the high significance of search engine optimisation as an extremely important factor of the success of any website, and provided methods and tips how to increase the SERP ranking. The second seminar of the Professional Seminar Series was delivered by Mr Petros Amoiridis, Manager at GitHub. In his presentation entitled 'Contribute effectively to open source on GitHub using Git' he described the GitHub Flow as the easiest way to collaborate using the GitHub platform and provided useful information on working on topic branches and keeping the latest stable production code in the master branch. Moreover, the way to use pull requests and code reviews was detailed. Students found both seminars particularly useful and gained valuable insights. Mr Petros Amoiridis The Professional Skills Seminar Series run annually by our Computer Science Department is a very successful series of seminars that features seasoned professionals who deliver guest lectures on range of contemporary topics. The Series aims at furnishing our students with more practical and technical knowledge and better preparing them for real life challenges in their future working environments.
