The English Studies Department at the 3rd International Conference for the Promotion of Educational Innovation

Dedicated to both novelty in pedagogy and teaching as well as innovation in the educational context, the English Studies Department’s (ESD) presence at the 3rdInternational Conference for the Promotion of Educational Innovation was notable. More specifically, Dr Giorgos Dimitriadis and Ms. Margarita Kosior contributed to this event which took place on October 13-15 in Larissa, Greece through the presentation of their work. The themes of the Conference included Innovative Teaching Practices and Methodologies at all levels of education, Intercultural Education, as well as Art and Education among others — all of which are areas that have greatly interested members of our Department from a research and teaching perspective. As part of this concerted effort to pursue the department’s research interests in teaching and innovation, Dr Dimitriadis and Ms. Kosior delivered a presentation entitled “Evaluating Film as a Teaching Aid for Intercultural Classes of Children and Early Adolescents,” in which they elaborated on the effectiveness of using cinema as a tool for language teaching and also provided participants with ideas on how they can use movies in their intercultural classes. Mr. Giorgos Dimitriadis and Ms. Margarita Kosior Moreover, Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of the English Studies Department was invited by the 3rd International Conference Organising Committee to Chair sessions devoted to teaching methodologies of Foreign Languages and promoting educational innovation in Language Teaching, but also in order to explore collaboration opportunities with the Scientific Association for the Promotion of Educational Innovation (E.E.P.E.K.).  ESD Staff members with Mr. Liovas and Mr. Kolokotronis from EEPEK The Conference was organised by E.E.P.E.K. in collaboration with the University of Thessaly, the TEI of Thessaly, the English Teachers Association of Larissa and the Representation of the European Commission in Greece. It was further supported by the Teachers 4 Europe educational initiative of the European Commission Representation in Greece and the French Institute of Larissa. The crowded Amphitheatre and full-house Sessions unveiled success stories of numerous educational Projects taking place in Greece and abroad! Congratulations to our Staff members on their illuminating presentation and for representing the Department in a perfectly-organised International Conference full of innovative Ideas already implemented in class.

Staff Members of the Computer Science Dept. in the 11th International Symposium on Intelligent Distributed Computing in Belgrade

Staff members from the Computer Science Department of the International Faculty CITY College participated in the 11th International Symposium on Intelligent Distributed Computing (IDC) that brought together a great number of researchers. The event was hosted in Belgrade (October 11-13). More precisely, Prof. Kefalas, Vice-principal for Teaching and Learning, was invited to Chair the Plenary Session of a conference, which constitutes a forum for the dissemination of studies in the emergent field of Intelligent Distributed Computing and an intellectual space where collaboration between researchers from Intelligent Computing and Distributing Computing communities are forged. Meanwhile, Dr Ioanna Stamatopoulou, Dr Konstantinos Dimopoulos and Prof. Kefalas made a joint contribution through their paper “Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Agents and Robotics in a Computer Science Curriculum.” This paper is a demonstration of the authors’ experience in integrating agents and robotics in their Computer Science Curriculum. The authors further presented a series of modules that progressively address these themes and other AI-related topics in their Curriculum. Finally, Ms. Krenare Pireva, a current SEERC doctoral student supervised by Prof. Kefalas, presented the paper “A recommender system based on hierarchical clustering for Cloud e-Learning” – in co-authorship with Prof. Kefalas. Cloud e-Learning (CeL) constitutes a novel e-learning paradigm, aiming to use any learning object from the cloud and to generate a personalised learning path for individual learners. In this paper, Ms. Pireva and Prof. Kefalas presented a Recommender System for Cloud e-Leaning that uses hierarchical clustering to select the most appropriate learning resources.    Our warmest congratulations to our colleagues on their inspiring work!

Induction Week 2017 in Thessaloniki

Academic year 2017-18 kicked off with the Induction Week during which staff and faculty welcomed students at the International Faculty CITY College. The Induction week took place at our main campus in Thessaloniki, 2-6 October 2017. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from all levels and departments attended the induction week sessions and activities which included faculty welcomes, introduction to academic activities, procedures and regulations, chance to meet the professors and fellow-students, presentation the Information & Learning Commons (ILC) facility and the overall learning environment, presentation of this year’s student clubs and societies and social events. The welcome party that took place on the last day of the Induction Week at ‘CITY Break’ café, gave students the opportunity to socialise and have fun with fellow-students. The RA Minister of Finance at the launching event of the Executive MBA in Yerevan

On 5 October 2017, the launching event of the second year of the University of Sheffield Executive MBA programme, offered by the International Faculty, took place in Yerevan in the presence of RA Minister of Finance, Mr Vardan Aramyan. The Minister congratulated the students on the decision to take the opportunity to participate part in this programme in their motherland and noted “This course will contribute to the growth of their competitiveness, development of capacities, skills and knowledge and would also promote the progress of our country”. The Minister also mentioned that in order to ensure the welfare of the society, first of all, the competitiveness of an individual is important. Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the University of Sheffield Executive MBA programme was also present at the event and addressed a warm welcome speech. The International Faculty CITY College launched the Executive MBA programme in Armenia in 2016 adding a 6th destination for the programme and thus enhancing its genuine international character.

Congratulations Dr Fivos Papamalis!

Congratulations to Fivos Papamalis, who recently defended successfully and was awarded his PhD degree on “An integrative approach to drug treatment evaluation: a pilot study of client and program level factors as indicators of treatment engagement”. Congratulations also go to Dr Papamalis’ supervisors, Dr Froso Kalyva and Dr Petra Meier for their systematic work, guidance and support. Dr Papamalis is a mental health researcher and practitioner. He owns BA in Counselling & Psychological Science, MA in Clinical Psychology and currently is a PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield and South East European Research Centre. He is an expert on Demand Reduction Issues and Assistant on External Affairs of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union - Horizontal Drugs Group and Advisor of the National Drug Coordinator of Greece. He is a Certified Addiction Counsellor by the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), and has been trained in several psychotherapeutic approaches. The International Faculty wishes Dr Fivos Papamalis best success in his career and future endeavours.

The English Studies Department of the International Faculty participates in ELTAM Conference

Ms Margarita Kosior, lecturer of the English Studies Department, and Ms Despoina Sarantidou, graduate of the BA (Hons) in English Language and Linguistics delivered a presentation titled “Designing Teaching Materials to Confront Modern Day Slavery” at the one-day conference “All Teachers are Materials Writers”, organised by ELTAM and MaWSIG on 30th September 2017 in Skopje. During the session, Ms Kosior and Ms Sarantidou presented a project assigned and completed in cooperation with The NO Project within the scope of the course on Evaluation and Design of Teaching Materials during the academic year 2016-17, with the aim of empowering other educators to produce teaching materials on the topic of modern-day slavery. The session, which comprised three parts, was well received. It started with an introduction to facts on the topic of modern-day slavery and with a brief presentation of The NO Project, an award-winning, global, anti-slavery educational campaign which raises youth awareness on human trafficking and modern day slavery, addressing crimes such as commercial sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, but also forced labour involved in the production of our daily products, such as chocolate, tea or coffee. At this stage, the nature of the collaboration between the English Studies Department and The NO Project was also explained. For the purpose of the assignment in the Evaluation and Design of Teaching Materials unit, students were asked to design a 50-minute lesson for students aged 16+ on the topic of human trafficking and with the aim to raise awareness of the crime of modern-day slavery. The best sample of student work would be uploaded to The NO Project website. The second part was devoted to the description of the project. During this stage, Ms Sarantidou described the process of creating her lesson that focuses on commercial sexual exploitation. The presentation finished with some recommendations for those who want to become The NO Project ambassadors by creating and contributing their own teaching materials to the cause. Ms Kosior and Ms Sarantidou were invited to join a panel discussion held at the end of the conference where they replied to questions regarding their session, but also related to materials design and ELT in general.

Dr Szamosi delivers fourth module of the Programme for Management Development in Kyiv

Focused on the importance of human resources, the fourth module of the Programme for Management Development was successfully delivered by Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Executive MBA, on 17 September 2017 in Kyiv. Dr Szamosi underpinned the significance of keeping the companies’ most important resource – their people – motivated. In his lively presentation he outlined a number of different key issues that can energize and motivate people to be their best and do their best. “What makes employees effective and what they are looking for is very often misunderstood. What experience has taught us is that creating a motivated workforce goes well beyond simple payment of wages. And, today, this is being even more complicated by the Millennials (Generation Y) joining our companies.” said Dr Szamosi.   The ‘Programme for Management Development’ comprises 6 modules. The programme aims at equipping professionals with skills and knowledge, which are required for meeting companies’ strategic objectives; understanding business as an integrated system in the interrelationship of organizational, financial, marketing decisions aimed at increasing business competitiveness. The University of Sheffield International Faculty is ‘educational partner’ of EBA, one of Kyiv’s key business associations.
