Successful Seminar on Change Management by Dr Szamosi in Kyiv
Dr Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Sheffield Executive MBA programme of the International Faculty delivered another successful seminar on Change Management in Kyiv. The seminar was addressed to members of the European Business Association (EBA) and took place on 15 September 2017 at the Management Development Centre of EBA. In his seminar entitled ‘Managing Organisational Change for Success’ Dr Szamosi highlighted the importance of paying attention to the people dimension of change, while carefully planning and managing the process of change at different levels within modern companies and organisations. “Research shows that problems with this dimension of change is the most commonly cited reason for project failures. In a study with 248 companies, effective change management with employees was listed as one of the top-three overall success factors for the project. Helping managers be effective sponsors of change was considered the most critical success factor overall.” said Dr Szamosi. The event took place in the frame of Education Update and was well attended by EBA members who showed particular interest on the topic. The University of Sheffield International Faculty is ‘educational partner’ of EBA, one of Kyiv’s key business associations, and often organises events for EBA’s members.

Dr Patsala's interview features in the Autumn issue of ELTeaser!
Dr Paschalia Patsala, Head of our English Studies Dept., discusses the response of Higher Education to emergent social issues in her interview in ELTeaser, the newsletter of TESOL Macedonica-Thrace, Northern Greece. Focusing on bridging the gap between University and the needs and expectations of Society, Dr Patsala highlights the significance of 'Engaged Learning' in the service of the local community. In the words of Dr Patsala: "Adopting a Public Engagement strategy can make a difference and provide a creative response to social issues. ‘Engaged learning’ attracts a lot of attention nowadays in Higher Education as it serves a great number of purposes, including challenging the students to apply what they have been taught in the classroom, broadening the horizons of both students and outside ‘partners,’ sharing knowledge, and building strong relationships between the University and its surrounding communities. After all, teaching a foreign language to a vulnerable population can have a massive impact by drawing our attention to significant contemporary or social topics, finding new approaches to foreign language teaching, or simply brightening people’s lives..." Business student and graduate coursework among the best in the world at the Undergraduate Awards 2017
Warm congratulations to International Faculty student and graduate, Giorgos Ioakeimidis (Greece) and Sanja Arsova (Skopje), who excelled in the international Undergraduate Awards Programme 2017 and were Highly Commended in the Business and Economics category respectively, ranking in the top 10% of all submissions worldwide. Ms Sanja Arsova Mr Giorgos Ioakeimidis This is an outstanding achievement at an international level, considering that the Undergraduate Awards (UA), the largest academic awards programme in the world, received 6,432 submissions from students in 299 Institutions across 47 countries this year alone. Sanja’s and Giorgo’s work was identified by the Undergraduate Awards as among the best undergraduate coursework globally. As a Highly Commended Entrants of The Undergraduate Awards Sanja and Giorgos are still in the running to be the Global Winner of their category, which will be announced on September 19th. Our student and graduate have been invited to attend the UA Global Summit 2017, that will gather 150 of Highly Commended Entrants and Global Winners in Dublin, Ireland between November 7th-9th. Sanja made her way to the top 10% of UA submissions in Economics with her paper entitled "Currency and Economic Crises: The Role of I.M.F. and the Exchange Rate Regimes" that she compiled as coursework for the module of International Financial Management led by Mr. Petros Golitsis, Lecturer at our Business Administration & Economics Department. It is worth noting that this is the second year in a row for Sanja to be shortlisted as ‘Highly Commended Entrants’ at the Undergraduate Awards, since last year she ranked in the top 10% submissions in the Business category. Sanja commented: "This academic achievement in international scale is an auxiliary acknowledgement of the academic excellence, in-depth research and transfer of knowledge that the International Faculty CITY College provides to its students. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and the academic staff for their commitment to quality education and continuous development of their students. It was an honour for me to study in such an educational institution that fosters an environment where students acquire not only specialised knowledge, but also a strong basis for their personal, social and cognitive development. I am genuinely proud to be part of the International Faculty Alumni Network". Giorgos made it to the top 10% of UA submissions in Business by submitting a paper on ‘Financial Innovation and the Shadow Banking System’ under the supervision of Mr Michalis Samarinas, Lecturer at our Business Administration & Economics Department. "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Undergraduate Awards' committee for selecting me as Highly Commended in the Business Category. I am so humbled to have been nominated for this award knowing that there were many qualified applicants. The University of Sheffield celebrates the #WeAreInternational campaign which has been awarded Marketing Campaign of the Year at the inaugural PIEoneer Awards 2017 by the PIE News, which stands for Professionals in International Education. #WeAreInternational, launched by the University of Sheffield and its Students’ Union, is a ground breaking campaign highlighting the importance of international students to the UK and has been honoured by a leading award ceremony for the international education sector. Judges for the awards praised the campaign’s use of video content featuring home and international students, and how it has celebrated international students’ contributions to the UK’s knowledge base, economy and culture. Launched by the two Presidents of the University of Sheffield and its Students’ Union in 2013, #WeAreInternational celebrates the huge contribution that international students bring to the UK. MIGRATE Open Event in Berlin
A research project coordinated by our research centre, SEERC The MIGRATE Jean Monnet Network had its second open event in Berlin on September 14th, 2017. SEERC, as the lead coordinator of the project was represented by Mr Nikos Zaharis, Director of SEERC, who opened the event, Dr Alexandra Prodromidou, the MIGRATE Academic Coordinator and Lecturer at our Business Administration & Economics Department (BAED) and Dr Pavlos Gkasis, the Director for Research of BAED and MIGRATE Research Associate. Both presented on their research findings. Summer School 2017 – Migrant Crisis within the Greek context
An exciting learning experience at the International Faculty in Thessaloniki Titled ‘The Migrant Crisis within the Greek context’, the Summer School 2017 was completed successfully and proved to be an exciting experience for the international group of participants (including students from the University of Sheffield, UK) who joined this year’s course. The Summer School was jointly organised by the University of Sheffield Politics Department and by the University’s International Faculty CITY College and took place between June 30th and July 8th at the main campus of the International Faculty in Thessaloniki. The course succeeded in making students aware of the migrant crisis and its wider political, economic and social implications while at the same time proved to be a particularly positive and fulfilling experience for both students and lecturers. The summer school comprised of 4 basic pillars: Academic Knowledge, Practitioner's Insight and Experiential Learning through Coaching Sessions and onsite volunteering, which gave insight on the migration crisis in Greece. Academic lectures were delivered by the following academics: Prof Nicola Philips (Head of Politics Department, University of Sheffield) Dr Owen Parker (Senior Lecturer, Politics Department, University of Sheffield) Dr Alexandra Prodromidou (SEERC Research Associate, Lecturer, Business Administration and Economics Department, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield) Dr Dimitris Tsarouhas (Associate Professor, International Relations Department, Bilkent University) Dr Pavlos Gkasis (SEERC Research Associate, Lecturer, Business Administration and Economics Department, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield) Dr Miltiadis Sarigiannidis (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Aristotle University) The academic part of the curriculum was enriched by a series of practitioner guest speakers who shared with participating students their experience with working daily on the field with migrants. Guest speakers included organizations like the United Nations, the International Organization for Migration, the Norwegian Refugee Council, WaHa and the Arbeiter Samariter Bund, as well as, local and state authorities dealing with the migrant crisis, like the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Ministry for Migration. The on-site visits at refugee settlements were very powerful experiences and gave invaluable insights to students. Finally, the course included various social activities and a day trip to Chalkidki. Participating students reported that the programme exceeded their expectations and left very positive feedback: • “The Summer School was a great experience and very well organised” • “(I liked) the up-close and personal experience we had at the refugee camp” • “The first hand information refugees gave us so valuable. ICEIRD 2017 Conference celebrates a decade of success in Thessaloniki
The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College and its research centre, SEERC celebrated a decade of success for the International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development by organizing its 10th Edition (ICEIRD 2017). The event took place with great success 31 August – 1 September 2017 at Makedonia Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki. More than 130 delegates from more than 31 countries headed for Thessaloniki to join the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of ICEIRD, a conference that is addressed to academics, university technology managers, entrepreneurs, policy- makers and businesses interested in the theory and practice of university-industry links as well as innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional development. Prof. Panayiotis H. Ketikidis, Vice-Principal of University’s International Faculty, CITY College –and also founder of ICEIRD- warmly welcomed all guests and introduced this year’s event together with his co-chairperson, Prof Tim Vorley, Associate Dean Impact, Innovation & Engagement, The University of Sheffield, UK. Themed “University-Industry Links: Coproducing Knowledge, Innovation & Growth” this year the aim of ICEIRD was to advance research and practice university-industry links. The conference (which rotated yearly around Europe) was structured around three tracks this year concerned with researching, co-producing and commercializing university-industry links. Keynote speeches were delivered by the following distinguished speakers: Prof. Paul L. Latreille Deputy Vice-President (Education) University of Sheffield, UK “The importance of industry engaged learning” Dr Vladimir Šucha Director-General of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission "A new narrative for Innovation" Prof. Lene Foss School of Business and Economics - UiT The Arctic University, Norway "How can universities develop entepreneurially" Ms. Mary Albertson, CLP, RTTP President of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and Senior Licensing Associate, Office of Technology Licensing (OTL), Stanford University Palo Alto, California USA "Creating a Better World: Evolution of Technology Transfer Globally" The event’s diverse programme included more than 120 academic and industry presentations, ten workshops and roundtables, all shedding light at the conference central topic and generating fruitful discussion. Overall ICEIRD 2017 met a highly positive success, with its participants having acquired an expert driven strategy and knowledge for boosting their know-how in entrepreneurialism, innovation and technology transfer by debunking myths and revealing the latest trends through a global network of practitioners and academics that helped expand their profile and that linked them with their intended goal (whether it is to pursue innovation, to become an entrepreneur or to be a successful player in the technology transfer field). In order to satisfy global demand for knowledge that a decade of ICEIRD has produced through its wide network, the 11th ICEIRD will go beyond Europe and will take place in Doha – Qatar.

Multiplier event of the HelpCare project hosted by SEERC
On August the 23rd, 2017, the National Multiplier Event of the HelpCare project was held in the premises of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College. The HelpCare project is an Erasmus+ funded project that the Faculty’s research centre, the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) joined as a research partner in 2016. The main objective was to identify the training needs and the condition that can lead to the “professionalization” of long term care, namely the delivery of care in high quality from formal or informal caregivers. Mr Pavlidis, Lecturer at the Psychology Department of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, and researcher in SEERC, presented to 30 commissioners of care deriving from various parts of Greece the research findings of the project, as well as analyzed the use of several guides and tools that were developed to train formal and informal caregivers in providing care effectively and with more confidence. Mr Pavlidis stated:“This event was an excellent opportunity to present the findings and the outputs of the HelpCare project, as well as to receive feedback, comments, and valuable insight for the challenges that care providers face in their efforts to provide care in high quality in Greece. The event produced interesting discussion and strengthened a network that is committed to the delivery of care in professional standards.”

Dr Veloudis awarded the Runner-up Wilkes Award 2017
Congratulations are in order for Dr Simeon Veloudis on receiving the runner-up Wilkes Award for his paper entitled ‘A Novel Permission Hierarchy for RBAC for Dealing with SoD in MAC Models’ that was published in The Computer Journal of the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS). The Wilkes Award is given once a year to the authors of the best paper published in the volume of The Computer Journal from the previous year. Dr Simeon Veloudis holds a BSc and a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Reading. He has been employed for several years as a lecturer at various educational institutions. Currently he is a research associate at the South East European Research Centre (SEERC). His research interests lie in the realms of formal security modelling, in cloud computing, and in real-time safety critical systems. He has a number of publications in related conferences and journals. The International Faculty wishes to congratulate again Dr Veloudis on his achievement depicting the high-calibre research produced by our faculty’s academics.
