10th Strategic People Management Workshop on Remote Work
The 10th Strategic People Management Workshop at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus took place on Wednesday 08 September. This in-person event centred on remote work, its implications, and best practices. After the opening presentations by Professor Leslie Szamosi, Director of the Pan-European Executive MBA and Professor of Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour, and Dr Giovanni Oscar Serafini, Assistant Professor in Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour, Ms Viktorija Damchevska, Head of People Operations at GrabIT, North Macedonia, shared online amazing insights on the application of remote work solutions. The floor was then opened to Executive MBA students of CITY College for a multifaceted discussion leading, among others, to the following main conclusions: (1) Organisations need to find the practices that work for them. It is a trial and error process until the optimal solution is found for the specific organisational context/case. (2) Empathy of managers is paramount: being 'aware' is key here in order to be compassionate and understand remote workers. (3) The peculiarity of remote work demands trust, transparency, and clarity of rules. With this backdrop, flexibility, giving choices, and decentralisation offer nimbleness to organisational structure and processes. Ultimately, organisations thus attain agile cultures thanks to agile management. The event took place in the context of the Annual Study Week of our Executive MBA programme and was attended by Executive MBA students from all 8 countries where the programme runs.

During the last three years I worked with nearly 80 Armenian students. Without any compromise, our graduates today are advocates of quality education. They keep an interest towards new knowledge, constantly grow and want to improve. And this is a quality to be inspired from. For me, the biggest challenge is to keep alive the wish to overcome challenges in a student who is an employee and has the first specialisation. Armenian students constantly present us with challenges and as education is a world necessity, the more we learn from the student and teach him, the better”. After the awarding of their degree Ms. Astghik Berezovskaya and Ms. Rema Ohanyan, both MBA graduates also addressed a short speech about their accomplishments and their MBA experience. Among the awards there were two degrees with distinction and four with merit. Graduates families and friends joined the ceremony and proudly congratulated our graduates. MBA graduate, Anahit Shahmuradyan, said after receiving the MBA degree: “My decision to join the Executive MBA programme that was offered in Armenia was made at a turning point in my life, I realized needed to make a big change in my professional life. Being a linguist, and also having a scientific degree, I decided to take the risk and learn finance and accounting. That was an area which seemed to be extremely strange and unknown. Studying at the Executive MBA Programme was one of the biggest challenges in my life, and I can now say with pride that I did it. I managed to overcome something which seemed to be inaccessible and impossible. I am holding today the University of Sheffield MBA degree in my hands and besides deep knowledge, it offered me experience, self-confidence and a sense of belonging to the world, being the world's citizen.“ The event was successful overall and was widely covered by local media.
