Photoshop Seminar for our Computer Science students
Undergraduate students from our Computer Science Department attended a very interesting Photoshop Seminar in the context of the successful Professional Seminar Series organised throughout the academic year by the department. Themed ‘Image Processing with Photoshop’ the seminar was presented by guest lecturer, Mrs. Georgianna Kiosi, a Co-Owner of Arte Di Tr3 Studio, who shared her knowledge and experience on Photoshop. The seminar comprised two parts. During the first part the speaker discussed about Photoshop’s camera raw, which is a very useful tool for massive and time-saving photo post-production, while, the second part of the seminar was an introduction to Photoshop and its philosophy. The seminar, presented by one of the most talented and creative professionals of her generation, equipped our students with technical knowledge and skills on image processing. The Professional Seminar Series run by our Computer Science Department is a very successful series of seminars, running each academic year, presented by different guest lectures on range of topics. The Series aims at furnishing our students with more practical and technical knowledge and better preparing them for real life challenges in their future working environments.

Computer Science student wins the first prize in STARTIFY7 Academy in Brussels
Congratulations to Computer Science student, Rina Basholli from Kosovo, who was awarded the first prize together with other members of the GetMeHome team that participated in the 2nd Bootcamp of the STARTIFY7 Academy in Brussels. GetMeHome is a start-up idea that aims at tackling the “drink-and-drive” problem in a creative and innovative way. Rina’s team had to compete against twelve other selected and highly competent teams from the ICT start-up academies of Twente, Almeria, Katowice and Thessaloniki and was assessed as the best by a panel comprised of Business Angles, VCs and industry experts. Ms Rina Basholli Rina said: “Being a part of such a huge event such as Startify7 was more than a privilege for me and winning the first prize was most definitely a great reward. Creating the right team for the specific idea and work on it in order to make it as good as possible, within only two weeks, was a true challenge. The whole community including organisers, mentors and participants functioned like a huge family. This, was for sure a boost for us, participants, to collaborate more with each other in order to work productively. Right now we’re working for our next important event, the European Venture Summit (EVS), which is going to be held this December in Dusseldorf. Our goal is to attract as much investors as we can so we can continue to make our idea a reality! I don’t think I would ever be able to get involved in these kind of activities if it weren’t for the year of studies I did at the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. I was able to apply in practice the knowledge that I gained during my studies. This, only thanks to the committed staff of professors of the Computer Science Department and the opportunities that our university offers to its students.” The next goal for Rina and the GetMeHome team is their participation at the European Venture Summit that will take place in Dusseldorf on 5-6 December 2016. Way to go Rina! About STARTIFY7 STARTIFY7 is a Horizon 2020 project from the European Commission aimed at training young future ICT entrepreneurs in Europe. It organizes 7 thematically focussed Summer Academies in 7 different European cities that follow a lean-training structure and emphasise strong team-building as well as learning-by-doing processes.

SURE Scheme – Computer Science student receives research funding
Congratulations to Mr Arlind Avdullahi, 2nd year bachelor student at our Computer Science Department on his successful research proposal that received funding from the University of Sheffield through the SURE scheme. The project, entitled ‘Evaluation of a new resource allocation scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks via simulation’, aspires to evaluate a QoS (Quality of Service) supportive resource allocation algorithm by developing a specialized simulator. The project will be supervised by Dr Thomas Lagkas, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department. Mr Arlind Avdullahi Project Supervisor Dr Thomas Lagkas Project description Modern WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) are being used in areas such as infrastructure security, environmental-industrial sensing as well as health monitoring. State-of-the-art IoT (Internet-of-Things) applications require efficient traffic differentiation, so that data packets are treated by the network according to their specific characteristics. For instance, data that is considered to be time critical, such as alarm messages of critical applications, has to be provided with more resources in order to avoid violation of time restrictions. The aim of this project is to evaluate a QoS (Quality of Service) supportive resource allocation algorithm by developing a specialized simulator. In this manner, recommendations on optimizing the allocation of resources in WSNs will be made based on the resulted network metrics. ‘SURE - Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience’ is a scheme of the University of Sheffield which invites undergraduate students of the university to conduct research in subject areas of their interest and offers scholarships to the best research proposals submitted.

The Computer Science Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, is happy to announce the launch of three (3) new postgraduate programmes in its portfolio, responding to the strong demand for specialisation in the field of Software Engineering. The new programmes offering specialization in telecommunications, security and web and mobile applications are the following MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Telecommunications) MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Security) MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Web and Mobile Applications) Dr Dimitris Dranidis, Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Computer Science Department comments: “Software has not only become an integral part of our every day life but also an important asset for the industry and the globalized economy. Furthermore, software is increasingly relying on the Internet and the World Wide Web to satisfy business and customer needs. The need for the development of high quality and in time software is very high; and so is the need for skilled, properly trained, and specialised software engineers. We aim to provide to our students with the knowledge, skills, and specialisation in contemporary technologies that are required to fulfill these demands. According to labor agencies worldwide, the occupation of Software Engineer is one of the highest-paying jobs. Our programmes have a strong industrial dimension through the real world cases which are examined, studied and practiced in the courses. Our graduates are high-calibre professionals ready for the largest and most rapidly developing sectors of the world economy.” All programmes are addressed to candidates who hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline. The programmes will be taught in English and will be offered both in full-time and part-time mode, starting the academic year 2015-16. Classes will be taking place on weekdays during afternoon hours.
