Robotics Competition by the Computer Science Department
On Friday, 17th May 2013 a Robotics Competition took place in the frame of the unit ‘Agents and Robotics’ of the 3rd level of the BSc in Computer Science programme. The competition was organised under the supervision of Dr. Kostas Dimopoulos , Lecturer at our Computer Science Department . During the 1-day competition that lasted from 10a.m. until 16.00p.m , the students, divided in teams of 4-5, had to design, build and program a small robot to compete in a "football"-type game. Each team used a lego mindstorms robot, and built their version of a ball collector that would throw the balls of its team’s colour to the side of the opposing team. The winning team was Mr Skafas, Mr Kalogeras, Mr Sidiropoulos, Ms Zisopoulou and Ms Kouri with their robot named "Ringo". The competition was a lot of fun for all participating students who had the opportunity to engage in productive team work and learn a lot about the fascinating world of robots.

Seminar on 'Fostering Personal Creativity - Boosting Organization Innovation' by Mr Hatziapostolou in Tirana
Mr. Thanos Hatziapostolou, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department delivered an insightful seminar on ‘Fostering Personal Creativity - Boosting Organization Innovation’. The seminar took place at the premises of the Faulty of Economics, University of Tirana on 30th of May. Mr. Hatziapostolou focused his lively presentation on personal creativity and innovation. He discussed why innovation is important for companies, what types of innovation exist, the roots of innovation and the sources of opportunity. The seminar continued with the second part focusing on how personal creativity can be measured and enhanced and how this can help companies’ growth. Mr. Hatziapostolou also pointed out the components and barriers to creativity and creativity’s relation to innovation. The seminar was very successful and interactive and was conluded with discussion between the audience and the speaker. Seminar on 'Education and Technology' by Mr Hatziapostolou at Noesis
Mr. Thanos Hatziapostolou, Senior Lecturer at our Computer Science Department, delivered a very interesting seminar entitled ‘Technology and Education’ that took place at NOESIS Technology Museum in Thessaloniki, 22 April 2013. In his presentation, Mr. Hatziapostolou presented a series of web tools that teachers can use to adapt new technology in the classroom in order to facilitate their work, increase student motivation and participation - since traditional teaching often cultivates a passive role -, receive better feedback, train students to use technology and improve the overall educational process. The speaker explained the use of each tool and their advantages to both the students and the teachers. The demos of some of the tools required the audience’s participation with the use of their smartphones. The outcome was quite impressive. When asked, Mr. Hatziapostolou commented: “If teachers are willing to be trained and embrace technology in their classes, students of every age are sure to benefit from the many tools and skills technology can offer. However technology should complement the traditional educational methods and not overwhelm the educational process”. The seminar was addressed to teachers of different levels of education and concluded with a vivid Q&A session.

Company visit to SEPVE for our Computer Science students
On Monday 1st April 2013 a group of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Computer Science Department made a field trip to SEPVE, the Association of Information Technology Companies of Northern Greece. During the visit the students had the opportunity to learn more about SEPVE, and attended presentations which were delivered by Mr G. Asimopoulos, Director of Technopolis, Mr S. Ignatiadis, Director of SEPVE and a representative of a company hosted at the incubator. SEPVE is the only collective body representing the interests of the Information Technology businesses in the regions of Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly. It plays a major role in assessing and promoting the needs of the Information Society in Greece and South Eastern Europe. The students enjoyed this field trip experience and had the opportunity to get information about a leading organization in the industry. The International Faculty is always happy to give its students the opportunity to visit organizations and take a glimpse on real life business environments.
